With the increase in the number of quality attributes (e.g. cost, availability, reusability), that are being considered in the process of enterprise architecture analysis, the decision maker needs a systematic way to balance these attributes against each other to obtain the best possible architecture. Utility theory addresses this need by providing methods for numerical representation of preferences of a stakeholder involved in a decision-making process. In this paper utility theory key concepts are explained with examples. the process of calculating the utility metric, which reflects stakeholder's set of preferences to select the most preferred architecture scenario is explained. the paper provides an explanation of how utility theory can be applied in enterprise architecture models which are meta-object facility compliant. this paper concludes by an example comparing two quality attributes on two architecture scenarios using utility theory and calculating the decision maker's overall utility metric across both quality attributes is provided. this shows the applicability of utility theory on architecture scenario analysis with multiple quality attributes.

Virtual enterprise is a new business collaboration form, which used to fulfill unique business requirements and make sure small and medium size enterprises can adapt themselves to modern business environment under increasing pressure. In this situation, collaborative enterprises demand an advanced information management system to share valuable knowledge and expertise. enterprise Portal is an enterprise-wide application which has been considered as an opportunity to develop and maintain integrated environments for collaborative business. the benefits of enterprise Portal make it as a new way to approach Virtual enterprise. the purpose of this paper is to introduce a new form of factories collaboration, namely Virtual Factory and elaborate how enterprise Portal provides integrated services to distributed factories. therefore, an open source enterprise Portal Liferay is selected. It enables different factories meet their manufacturing targets. It provides a single tool for all factories to access the real time manufacturing information and products information. In this paper, an innovative method is presented to improve manufacturing process and increase the ability of information sharing across different factories.

Componentization and service orientation are two key firm's behavioral orientations to transform the traditional (rigid) enterprise model into a flexible (dynamic) one in order to support making successful sourcing decisions like sharing services, in-outsourcing, centralization-decentralization and globalization. According to these enablers, a subjective and dynamic view is needed to study the dynamic nature of enterprises and to interpret the complex emerging phenomena of componentization and service orientation such as dynamic configuration of resources (dynamic capabilities), internal and external interaction between components, service exchange and value creation. In this paper, our solution is applying viable system approach (vSa) in enterprise Engineering;1) as an interpretive approach to qualify the concepts of the complex emerging phenomena of componentization and service orientation;2) as a governance approach to investigate the implications of the complex emerging phenomena for sourcing decision making like sharing, in-outsourcing, centralization-decentralization and globalization.

To measure the achievement of predefined enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) goals, it is essential to empower business users to define organization-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). However, to support tool-based calculation of such KPIs, a formal model-based query language is required for their definition and calculation. In this paper we first examine existing general-purpose query languages regarding their suitability for the definition of business-user-specific KPIs in a collaborative environment. thereafter, we justify the demand for a domain-specific query language ensuring a balance between the strengths of existing query languages and the size and purpose of the EAM domain. Based on this, we outline important design details and a prototypical implementation of such a language in a EAM tool. Finally, our language design is being evaluated by the implementation of suggested EAM KPIs from literature on the one hand, and by the development of a prototype for the use in an EU project on the other hand.

It is shown how a service-oriented and model-based approach for enterprise Architecture and enterprise Engineering can provide agile support for the different abstraction and modeling levels from business model and service innovation to cloud-based service realisation. Business model innovation is supported with a basis in a business model framework with six views, where each view is supported by a corresponding diagram from the Value Delivery Modeling Language (VDML). Service innovation is supported by the Service Modeling Language (ServiceML), which shares the core collaboration models of VDML for role modeling and value networks, according to the five views of the AT-ONE service innovation method. Service realisation is supported by further transformation to SoaML and a model-based service execution platform. this approach presents a framework using the emerging OMG standard language VDML together with ServiceML for service design and engineering, relating value models, process models, user interface and interaction flow models, and service architectures and service contract models.

eScience is the field trying to provide IT support to scientists throughout the life cycle of scientific experiments. the major focus is on shortening the time to new discoveries and revealing knowledge about natural phenomena by providing software systems for different scientific tasks and for many domains. In this field, however, one can observe that there are no standardized and systematic approaches for developing the systems dealing with the processing and analysis of the large amounts of scientific data. In this paper we introduce eScienceSWaT, a software engineering methodology that aims at providing a systematic and user-friendly approach for building software applications for scientific experiments. the proposed approach considers the existing knowledge from computer science and software engineering but does not require scientists to be specialists in these fields. Furthermore, we present an architecture of a composable system enabling eScienceSWaT. the system is meant to guide scientists in developing their experiments and features decision support capabilities based on patterns. Both the methodology and the architecture apply approaches from enterprise computing, Cloud computing and Software Engineering. In order to demonstrate the suitability of eScienceSWaT, we apply it to a scenario from the field of scientific simulations.

Adequate tool support for enterprise Architecture (EA) and its respective management function is crucial for the success of the discipline in practice. However, currently available tools used in organizations focus on structured information neglecting the collaborative effort required for developing and planning the EA. As a result, utilization of these tools by stakeholders is often not sufficient and availability of EA products in the organization is limited. We investigate the integration of existing EA tools and enterprise Wikis to tackle these challenges. We will describe how EA initiatives can benefit from the use and integration of an enterprise Wiki with an existing EA tool. Main goal of our research is to increase the utilization of EA tools and enhance the availability of EA products by incorporating unstructured information content in the tools. For this purpose we analyze task characteristics that we revealed from the processes and task descriptions of the EA department of a German insurance organization and align them with technology characteristics of EA tools and enterprise Wikis. We empirically evaluated these technology characteristics using an online survey with results from 105 organizations in previous work. We apply the technology-to-performance chain model to derive the fit between task and technology characteristics for EA management (EAM) tool support in order to evaluate our hypotheses.

Applications with Service-oriented enterprise Architectures in the Cloud are emerging and will shape future trends in technology and communication. the development of such applications integrates enterprise Architecture and Management with Architectures for Services & Cloud computing, Web Services, Semantics and Knowledge-based Systems, Big Data Management, among other Architecture Frameworks and Software Engineering Methods. In the present work in progress research, we explore Service-oriented enterprise Architectures and application systems in the context of Big Data applications in cloud settings. Using a Big Data scenario, we investigate the integration of Services and Cloud computing architectures with new capabilities of enterprise Architectures and Management. the underlying architecture reference model can be used to support semantic analysis and program comprehension of service-oriented Big Data Applications. enterprise Services computing is the current trend for powerful large-scale information systems, which increasingly converge with Cloud computing environments. In this paper we combine architectures for services with cloud computing. We propose a new integration model for service-oriented enterprise Architectures on basis of ESARC - enterprise Services Architecture Reference Cube, which is our previous developed service-oriented enterprise architecture classification framework, with MFESA - Method Framework for Engineering System Architectures - for the design of service-oriented enterprise architectures, and the systematic development, diagnostics and optimization of architecture artifacts of service-oriented cloud-based enterprise systems for Big Data applications.

this paper is presenting a discussion of feral information systems (FIS) in relationship to enterprise architecture (EA) thereby aiming to better qualify the architectural understanding of information systems not in line with corporate IT/IS strategy and policies. A qualitative and case-based approach is used as empirical foundation of this paper. With users developing own IS, classical strategy-based EA approaches are challenged. Identifying FIS can strongly improve insight into organizational processes and shortcomings official EA. A functional and temporal perspective is proposed to guide EA processes to embrace unofficial, user-driven systems. As FIS tend not to follow any rules of corporate IS, EA embrace of FIS is more complex. Using a meta-model for the social and operational character of FIS this complexity can be managed along with the improve business insight. the recognition of FIS in EA both opens up for insight in local adaptations of business processes, but can also create room for low-cost innovation and rapid response to changes in business conditions. Several forecasts are suggesting corporate IT/IS to be more user-driven and with reduced control from IT/IS professionals. this paper is opening a discussion on EA practice when centralized control is assumed to decline. EA has a tendency to be developed "top-down" emphasizing strategic alignment. In this contributed it is suggested to include social and operational alignment in EA practice.

enterprise architecture management (EAM) aims at aligning business and IT. therefore, EAM analyzes the current and defines the target state. In order to reach the target state, EAM plans and monitors transformations affecting business processes, information systems and the underlying IT infrastructure. thereby, domains are a widely used tool in order to reduce the complexity. the domains structure the enterprise architecture, e. g. according to the business fields a company is working in. Resources and responsibilities are assigned to these domains and transformations are then coordinated within domains. this approach, however, poses the risk that business requirements are solved redundantly although an existing IT system from another domain could have been reused. It even hinders an integration of the IT systems used in the different business fields. this paper describes an approach for coordinating transformations based on so-called business building blocks (BBBs). BBBs define the essential business elements independent from their implementation, with a granularity suitable for reuse within and across domains. Our approach determines who is responsible for providing a solution to a certain business requirement by assigning clear responsibilities to the corresponding BBB. this business outcome-driven approach helps focusing on business requirement solutions instead of managing system solutions. Ideally, there is exactly one responsible authority per BBB. In the paper, we provide a description of our BBB identification method and relate the suggested approach into one of the currently most widely adopted EA frameworks, i.e. the Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF). We report about the experiences we made when using this method in various EAM projects and recommend best practices.
