Componentization and service orientation are two key firm's behavioral orientations to transform the traditional (rigid) enterprise model into a flexible (dynamic) one in order to support making successful sourcing decisions like sharing services, in-outsourcing, centralization-decentralization and globalization. According to these enablers, a subjective and dynamic view is needed to study the dynamic nature of enterprises and to interpret the complex emerging phenomena of componentization and service orientation such as dynamic configuration of resources (dynamic capabilities), internal and external interaction between components, service exchange and value creation. In this paper, our solution is applying viable system approach (vSa) in enterprise Engineering, 1) as an interpretive approach to qualify the concepts of the complex emerging phenomena of componentization and service orientation, 2) as a governance approach to investigate the implications of the complex emerging phenomena for sourcing decision making like sharing, in-outsourcing, centralization-decentralization and globalization.

this paper discusses the potential benefits of incorporating a goal-oriented perspective to Business Process Management (BPM) from a methodological point of view, with a focus on the BPM Design and Evaluation phases. To achieve this aim, we examine the current activities of the BPM lifecycle and on the basis of that, the lifecycle is increased with new activities related to the modeling of business services and goals. In the BPM design phase, we suggest the integration of business services, goals and KPI modeling to the previously modeled business processes, also describing how the existing methods in goal and KPI modeling can be used to perform such representation. In the Evaluation phase, we discuss how the previously modeled KPIs can be evaluated in terms of operational data. the information produced by the KPI monitoring enables one to verify whether the business goals are being adequately fulfilled by the enterprise architecture. Further, business services can be evaluated with respect to their ability in adequately aggregating value for the final customer.

With the increase in the number of quality attributes (e.g. cost, availability, reusability), that are being considered in the process of enterprise architecture analysis, the decision maker needs a systematic way to balance these attributes against each other to obtain the best possible architecture. Utility theory addresses this need by providing methods for numerical representation of preferences of a stakeholder involved in a decision-making process. In this paper utility theory key concepts are explained with examples. the process of calculating the utility metric, which reflects stake holder's set of preferences to select the most preferred architecture scenario is explained. the paper provides an explanation of how utility theory can be applied in enterprise architecture models which are meta-object facility compliant. this paper concludes by an example comparing two quality attributes on two architecture scenarios using utility theory and calculating the decision maker's overall utility metric across both quality attributes is provided. this shows the applicability of utility theory on architecture scenario analysis with multiple quality attributes.

enterprise applications such as available-to-promise (ATP), financial accounting, and dunning typically employ a mixed database workload with short-running transactional as well as analytical queries with resource-intensive aggregations. the latter type of queries can be significantly accelerated by using materialized views with pre-calculated aggregates. However, this speed-up comes with the cost of view maintenance which is necessary to guarantee consistency when the underlying data changes. In this paper, we evaluate existing view maintenance strategies in the context of a columnar in-memory database that is designed for mixed workloads. We propose a novel view maintenance strategy that takes the main-delta architecture and resulting merge process of columnar storage into account. A further contribution is a cost model which determines the best maintenance strategy given a specific workload. Our experiments using an ATP application show that our novel strategy outperforms other strategies in mixed workloads with an insert-ratio of more than 40 percent.

To measure the achievement of predefined enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) goals, it is essential to empower business users to define organization-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). However, to support tool-based calculation of such KPIs, a formal model-based query language is required for their definition and calculation. In this paper we first examine existing general-purpose query languages regarding their suitability for the definition of business-user-specific KPIs in a collaborative environment. thereafter, we justify the demand for a domain-specific query language ensuring a balance between the strengths of existing query languages and the size and purpose of the EAM domain. Based on this, we outline important design details and a prototypical implementation of such a language in a EAM tool. Finally, our language design is being evaluated by the implementation of suggested EAM KPIs from literature on the one hand, and by the development of a prototype for the use in an EU project on the other hand.

enterprise Architecture (EA) modeling languages, such as ArchiMate, describe an enterprise holistically. In doing so, they show an enterprise's business products and services, and how these are realized by IT infrastructure and applications. However, EA modeling languages lack the capability to capture design rationales for decisions that lead to specific architectural designs. In our previous work we presented the EA Anamnesis approach for capturing decision details behind EA models. In doing so, we focused on capturing individual architectural decisions (in terms of alternatives, decision criteria, et cetera). In this paper we present an approach for relating architectural decisions. Using decision design graphs, we make explicit how decisions from different enterprise domains (Business, Application, Technology) relate to each other. For example, how decisions taken on a business level affect IT decisions and vice versa. Our approach is inspired by well-known mechanisms for capturing architectural rationales in software architecture. Specifically we contribute: (1) a decision relationship metamodel for enterprise architecture, with a focus on recording the impact of decisions (2) the notion of a Decision Design Graph for enterprise architecture, a visual representation of this metamodel, and (3) an illustrative example illustrating the potential usefulness of capturing decision relationships.

Software testing is a critical process for achieving product quality. Its importance is more and more recognized, and there is a growing concern in improving the accomplishment of this process. In this context, Knowledge Management emerges as an important supporting tool. However, managing relevant knowledge to reuse is difficult and it requires some means to represent and to associate semantics to a large volume of test information. In order to address this problem, we have developed a Reference Ontology on Software Testing (ROost). ROost is built reusing ontology patterns from the Software Process Ontology Pattern Language (SP-OPL). In this paper, we discuss how ROost was developed, and present a fragment of Roost that concerns with software testing process, its activities, artifacts, and procedures.

As the number and diversity of technologies involved in building enterprise systems continues to grow so does the importance of modeling tools that are able to present customized views of enterprise systems to different stakeholders according to their needs and skills. Moreover, since the range of required view types is continuously evolving, it must be possible to extend and enhance the languages and services offered by such tools on an ongoing basis. However, this can be difficult with today's modeling tools because the meta-models that define the languages, views and services they support are usually hardwired and thus not amenable to extension. In practice, therefore, various workarounds have to be used to extend a tool's underlying meta-model. Some of these are built into the implemented modeling standards (e.g. the UML profile, BPMN 2.0 and ArchiMate 2.0 extension mechanisms) while others have to be applied by complementary, external tools (e.g. model weaving). these techniques not only increase accidental complexity, they also reduce the ability of the modeling tool to ensure adherence to enterprise rules and constraints. In this paper we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches for language extension and propose a modeling framework best able to support the main extension use-cases currently found in practice today.

this paper addresses the problem of transforming natural language business specifications into formal models suitable for use in information systems. In particular, the Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) standard is used as a starting point for both the natural language specifications and the formal representation. In recent years, SBVR-based approaches have been proposed for transforming natural language business rules into models, such as UML Class Diagrams, however, most focus on the transformations performed after the SBVR models have been created and, therefore, simplify or entirely neglect the natural language to SBVR transformation. there are a number of difficulties in transforming natural language into formal models, such as ambiguity and inconsistency. this paper presents a solution based on a unique combination of techniques from Cognitive Linguistics and Knowledge-based Configuration in order to transform natural language business specifications into SBVR models. We present a comparative survey of state-of-the-art approaches and argue that current solutions do not fulfil the criteria necessary to meet our goals. We demonstrate our approach and show how it improves translation of natural language business specifications into formal models and increases the level of automation for Model-Driven Engineering.

Adequate tool support for enterprise Architecture (EA) and its respective management function is crucial for the success of the discipline in practice. However, currently available tools used in organizations focus on structured information neglecting the collaborative effort required for developing and planning the EA. As a result, utilization of these tools by stakeholders is often not sufficient and availability of EA products in the organization is limited. We investigate the integration of existing EA tools and enterprise Wikis to tackle these challenges. We will describe how EA initiatives can benefit from the use and integration of an enterprise Wiki with an existing EA tool. Main goal of our research is to increase the utilization of EA tools and enhance the availability of EA products by incorporating unstructured information content in the tools. For this purpose we analyze task characteristics that we revealed from the processes and task descriptions of the EA department of a German insurance organization and align them with technology characteristics of EA tools and enterprise Wikis. We empirically evaluated these technology characteristics using an online survey with results from 105 organizations in previous work. We apply the technology-to-performance chain model to derive the fit between task and technology characteristics for EA management (EAM) tool support in order to evaluate our hypotheses.
