While several role-related concepts play an important role in business modeling, their definitions, relations, and use differ greatly between languages, papers, and reports. Due to this, the knowledge captured by models is not transferred correctly, and models are incomparable. In this paper, we provide a meta-model and definitions for several role-related concepts based on the practice of existing modeling languages and ontological analysis. this forms a basis for creating comparable, formal business models, which enable further enterprise engineering, in a repeatable way.

Autonomic automation is viewed as a new approach to business process automation. In this work, we propose a method to identify the best-suited business processes as candidates for an autonomic automation. Generally, this decision is made by process automation experts or inspired by management preferences [1]. Moreover, the best candidate to an autonomic automation is possibly different from a candidate to a traditional automation. To support our method we developed a tool with ability to inspect the process model and obtain specific metrics. Finally, we present the results of the proposed selection method, compared with expert choices and to existent methods for traditional automation selection.

the "goal domain" addresses objectives in a broad scope ranging from high-level statements expressing the vision and mission of an organization (or community) to declarations of the results that must be achieved by business process execution. this paper reviews the support for the goal domain in ISO RM-ODP. We analyze the conceptualization for goals (objectives) in the reference model's enterprise Viewpoint using a fragment of the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO) that deals with some aspects of social reality and intentionality. the interpretation of the RM-ODP concepts in terms of this foundation may help to provide a sound underpinning for these concepts and support the identification of possible extensions of the reference model.

Requirements on message-based interactions can be formalized as an interface contract that specifies constraints on the sequence of possible messages that can be exchanged by multiple parties. At runtime, each peer can monitor incoming messages and check that the contract is correctly being followed by their respective senders. We introduce cooperative runtime monitoring, where a recipient "delegates" its monitoring task to the sender, which is required to provide evidence that the message it sends complies with the contract. In turn, this evidence can be quickly checked by the recipient, which is then guaranteed of the sender's compliance to the contract without doing the monitoring computation by itself. A particular application of this concept is shown on web services, where service providers can monitor and enforce contract compliance of third-party clients at a small cost on the server side, while avoiding to certify or digitally sign them.

Today's enterprises are confronted with an ever changing environment demanding continuous adaptation. A commonly accepted instrument to guide such transformations is enterprise architecture (EA) management. enterprises seeking to introduce and establish such a management function see themselves confronted with a plethora of tools, approaches, and frameworks that claim to provide 'the definitive design prescriptions' for an EA management function. the applicability of the different prescriptions nevertheless heavily depends on the organizational context in which such a management function has to be embedded and the EA-related goals that the enterprise wants to pursue. this paper presents a design theory nexus (DTN) for situational EA management, that helps enterprises to choose the EA management approach best suited for their specific situation. To build such a DTN, related work from the field of situational method engineering is revisited and prominent approaches to EA management are discussed. Utilizing the DTN an enterprise can specify its organizational context as well as its goals, and is provided with a selection of suitable approaches. the applicability of the approach is exemplified along the EA management pattern catalog of the TU Munich.

enterprise Architecture models can be used to support IT/business alignment. However, existing approaches do not distinguish between different IT/business alignment situations. Since companies face diverse challenges in achieving a high degree of IT/business alignment, a universal 'one size fits all' approach does not seem appropriate. this paper proposes to decompose the IT/business alignment problem into tangible qualities for business, IT systems, and IT governance. An explorative study among 162 professionals is used to distinguish four IT/business alignment situations, i.e. four clusters of IT/business alignment problems. these situations each represent the current state according to certain qualities and also the priorities for future development. In order to increase IT/business alignment, enterprise architecture meta models are proposed for each identified situation. One core meta model (to reflect common priorities) as well as situation-specific extensions are presented.

enterprise applications are presently built on a 20-year old data management infrastructure that was designed to meet a specific set of requirements for OLTP systems. In the meantime, enterprise applications have become more sophisticated, data set sizes have increased, requirements on the freshness of input data have been strengthened, and the time allotted for completing business processes has been reduced. To meet these challenges, enterprise applications have become increasingly complicated to make up for shortcomings in the data management infrastructure. To address this issue we investigate recent trends in data management such as main memory databases, column stores and compression techniques with regards to the workload requirements and data characteristics derived from actual customer systems. We show that a main memory column store is better suited for todays enterprise systems, which we validate by using SAP's NetWeaver Business Warehouse Accelerator and a realistic set of data from an inventory management application.

the benefit of enterprise architecture (EA) management is directly coupled to the underlying conceptualization of the enterprise. this conceptualization should reflect the goals pursued by the EA management endeavor and focus on the areas of interest of the involved stakeholders. Whereas this statements often goes as a matter of course, an enterprise willing to develop such a goal-adequate conceptualization, finds itself confronted with a plethora of different approaches typically proposing a one-size-fits-it-all model, which neglects the subject of enterprise-specificity. these models are typically described in an object-oriented manner utilizing concepts like class, property, and relationship. Specific aspects relevant in the area of EA management, such as temporality, property-dependency, and cross-cutting aspects are more often than not neglected in this approaches. In this paper, we addresses the challenge of conceptualizing cross-cutting aspects in EA modeling. Cross-cutting aspects refer to EA-related concepts, like goals or projects, which may exert influence on other concepts of the EA model. therefore, the state-of-the-art in EA conceptualization is revisited resulting in the identification of four cross-cutting aspects of EA modeling: goals, lifecycles, projects, and standards. Along these aspects we raise questions concerning a suitable alternative modeling language for EA conceptualizations and discuss options of future research.

this paper presents a mapping between the enterprise Architecture framework ArchiMate and the Substation Configuration Language (SCL) of IEC 61850. enterprise Architecture (EA) is a discipline for managing an enterprise's information system portfolio in relation to the supported business. Metamodels, descriptive models on how to model and one of the core components of EA, can assist stakeholders in many ways, for example in decision-making. Moreover, the power industry is a domain with an augmented reliance on the support of information systems. IEC 61850 is a standard for the design of Substation Automation (SA) systems and provides a vendor independent framework for interoperability by defining communication networks and functions. the SCL is a descriptive language in IEC 61850 on the configuration of substation Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) which describes the structure together with physical components and their relating functions. By using SCL, which models the architecture of SA systems, and mapping it to ArchiMate, stakeholders are assisted in understanding their SA system and its architecture. the mapping is intended to support the integration of SA systems applying IEC 61850 into the enterprise architecture. the mapping is demonstrated with an example applying the mapping to a SA configuration based on SCL.

the formalism Probabilistic Relational Models (PRM) couples discrete Bayesian Networks with a modeling formalism similar to UML class diagrams and has been used for architecture analysis. PRMs are well-suited to perform architecture analysis with respect to system qualities since they support both modeling and analysis within the same formalism. A particular strength of PRMs is the ability to perform meaningful analysis of domains where there is a high level of uncertainty, as is often the case when performing system quality analysis. However, the use of discrete Bayesian networks in PRMs complicates the analysis of continuous phenomena. the main contribution of this paper is the Hybrid Probabilistic Relational Models (HPRM) formalism which extends PRMs to enable continuous analysis thus extending the applicability for architecture analysis and especially for trade-off analysis of system qualities. HPRMs use hybrid Bayesian networks which allow combinations of discrete and continuous variables. In addition to presenting the HPRM formalism, the paper contains an example which details the use of HPRMs for architecture trade-off analysis.
