enterprise Architecture (EA), with its numerous and pervasive models, can support decision making on enterprise-wide issues. To provide such support, EA models should be amenable to analysis of various quality attributes. the prerequisite to providing this is to define and characterize EA quality attributes explicitly. this paper proposes the idea of EA quality attributes and their characterization by using EA quality attribute general scenarios. Also a meta-model is presented for their purpose of definition. Finally, as a sample of EA quality attributes, EA maintainability has been defined and characterized.

Most software engineering techniques that deal with software products customization are based on anticipation: the software designer has to foresee, somehow, the future needs for customization so that other programmers can adapt the software product with as little modifications as possible (programmers hide implementation details behind previously defined interfaces, or alternatively, they refine some pre-defined properties). While practical, this approach is unfortunately not completely satisfactory for enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs). these software products have to be customizable for numerous and various local contexts;they cover a very large domain, one that cannot be fully comprehended - hence accurate anticipation is difficult. To solve this problem, an extreme measure is to give the programmers the means to do modifications in place, directly in the source code. this approach trades control for flexibility. Unfortunately, it also makes the customized software product very sensitive to upgrades. We propose a more mitigated solution, that does not require accurate anticipation and yet offers some resilience to the evolution of the base software product through the use of code quantification. We introduce the Eggther framework for customization of evolvable software products in general and ERP systems in particular. Our approach is based on the concept of code query by example. the technology being developed is based on an initial empirical study on practices around ERP systems. We motivate our design choices based on those empirical results, and we show how the proposed solution helps with respect to the upgrade problem.

Models are an integral part of the discipline of enterprise Architecture (EA). To stay relevant to management decision-making needs, the models need to be based upon suitable metamodels. these metamodels, in turn, need to be properly and continuously maintained. While there exists several methods for metamodel development and maintenance, these typically focus on internal metamodel qualities and metamodel engineering processes, rather than on the actual decision-making needs and their impact on the metamodels used. the present paper employs techniques from information theory and learning classification trees to propose a method for metamodel management based upon the value added by entities and attributes to the decision-making process. this allows for the removal of those metamodel parts that give the least "bang for the bucks" in terms of decision support. the method proposed is illustrated using real data from an ongoing research project on systems modifiability

In recent years, service-oriented architecture (SOA) has been widely adopted for enterprise application integration. A SOA not only promotes interoperable, loosely coupled enterprise applications;it also reduces the conceptual gap between business and IT. For SOA life-cycle management it is desirable that business processes can be traced to services and vice versa. However, this is usually not the case because many stakeholders and often more than one organization are involved in the SOA ecosystem. In addition, the various stakeholders employ their own vocabularies and formats. In this paper, we therefore recognize semantic traceability as the missing link between the two worlds and promote an integrated view on the various entities in the SOA life-cycle. First, we describe a SOA life-cycle model. Second, we propose the STraS traceability framework for end-to-end semantic traceability. Finally, we show how our approach contributes to the management of a SOA in business networks.

For many enterprises the introduction of service orientation is still a daunting task and there is often no distinct idea of how to approach respective projects. Only recently, SOA research addresses this open and essential question and systematic methodologies for SOA introduction and evolution have been conceived. EBM's SOMA and sd&m's Quasar enterprise are prominent examples. In practice, these methodologies have to rely on a variety of enterprise-specific information and integrate a number of different architectural instruments. this contribution introduces one typical constituent of evolution towards service orientation making extensive use of enterprise-specific information. the presented approach and prototypical implementation for the gap analysis of current and ideal application landscapes can also be regarded as a building block for more general architecture development methodologies like for example proposed by the TOGAF Architecture Development Method. the gap analysis measures the distance between two states of the application landscape by applying and aggregating a set of metrics specifically aimed at the context of architecture development. It results in a list of concrete actions which can be considered for landscape migration planning and hence can be a helpful instrument for enterprise architects.

the pipeline structure is intuitive design pattern for parallel and distributed programming. However it has some limitations so that it can not be applied effectively, especially in the distributed environment. this paper describes a distributed pipeline programming framework (DPPF) for state-based pattern. DPPF makes use of the slate-based pipeline design pattern and object-Oriented technology to design pipeline. In DPPF the pipeline stage is regard as an object that be passed between two compute nodes with its state. Message-passing method is replaced object-passing method through Java socket for information transmission. For the state pattern, all compute nodes are separated from the pipeline control flow Information transmission that runs in the background is transparent for the programmer So programmers are more easily to design pipeline structure for distributed programming. In addition, it is effective to improve the performance and dynamic load balance for some coarse-grained applications.

Server Virtualization is driven by the goal of reducing the total number of physical servers in an organisation by consolidating multiple applications on shared servers. Expected benefits include more efficient server utilisation, and a decrease in green house gas emissions. However, Service Oriented Architectures combined with Server Virtualization may significantly increase risks such as saturation and Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations. Since 2006 National ICT Australia Ltd (NICTA) has been developing a technology for the performance modelling of large scale heterogeneous Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs). the technology has been empirically trialled, refined and validated with collaborating Australian Government agencies to address critical performance risks. Many government SOAs are developed, tested and deployed on virtualized hardware, and we have developed the capability to model the performance of SOAs deployed on virtual servers. In this paper we provide an overview of NICTA's SOA performance modelling approach, and then explore a number of alternative deployment scenarios for an example SOA based on a synthetic carbon emission trading system. We show how our modelling approach provides insights into the relationship between workloads, services, and resource requirements, and can therefore be used to predict server power consumption and carbon emissions. We model and evaluate four different deployment options including planned and optimised resources, server virtualization, and computing-on-demand (cloud computing using Amazon EC2). We conclude with an overview of other potential problems and benefits of SOA virtualization.
