In this paper we describe our approach for developing a QoS-aware, dependable execution environment for large-scale distributed stream processing applications. distributed stream processing applications have strong timeliness and security demands. In particular, we address the following challenges: (1) propose a real-time dependable execution model by extending the component-based execution model with real-time and dependability properties, and (2) develop QoS-aware application composition and adaptation techniques that employ resource management strategies and security policies when discovering and selecting application components. Our approach enables us to develop a distributed stream processing environment that is predictable, secure, flexible and adaptable.

Effective resource management for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to their unique characteristics, including (1) constraints in multiple resources and (2) highly fluctuating resource availability and input workload. DRE systems can benefit from a middleware framework that enables adaptive resource management algorithms to ensure application QoS requirements are met. this paper identifies key challenges in designing and extending resource allocation algorithms for DRE systems. We present an empirical study of bin-packing algorithms enhanced to meet these challenges. Our analysis identifies input application patterns that help generate appropriate heuristics for using these algorithms effectively in DRE systems.

Scaling in hardware integration process results in IC-process geometry reductions, lower operating voltages and increased clock speeds. this paper first surveys the reliability obstacles these developments give rise to and then points out that computing systems can no longer be safely assumed to fail only by crashing. Yet this assumption is at the core of primary-backup replication which the literature presents as the appropriate, and hence the most widely used, strategy for time-critical fault-tolerant applications. the paper then observes that building computing nodes with announced crash failure mode is a promising way forward to deal with the emerging reliability challenges. Work carried out to assure such a failure mode has also been briefly surveyed.

Reusable libraries are problematic for real-time software in Java. Using Java's standard class library, for example, demands meticulous coding and testing to avoid response time spikes and garbage collection. We propose two design requirements for reusable libraries in real-time systems: worst-case execution time (WCET) bounds and worst- case memory consumption bounds. Furthermore, WCET cannot be known if blocking method calls are used. We have applied these requirements to the design of three Java-based prototypes: a set of collection classes, a networking stack, and trigonometric functions. Our prototypes show that reusable libraries can meet these requirements and thus be viable for real-time systems.

Model-driven design (MDD) can be perceived in the recent literature as an option to deal with the increasing complexity of the design of distributed embedded real-time systems (DERTS). this paper reports some results of a research project aiming to support a MDD approach, which applies concepts of the aspect-oriented (AO) paradigm in order to improve the treatment of non-functional requirements (NFR) in the design of DERTS. A tool named GenERTiCA, which generates source code from UML diagrams and also weaves aspect adaptations, has been developed to support such MDD/AO approach. this paper presents results regarding the use of GenERTiCA to generate code and implement aspects (from a high-level framework of aspect) for the RT-FemtoJava platform, a RTSJ-based and optimized Java platform for DERTS.

the real-time specification for Java (RTSJ) extends the Java memory model through immortal and scoped memory regions to reduce the timing-indeterminism caused by garbage collection. Since scoped regions can be nested, RTSJ imposes strict assignment rules to avoid dangling pointers. these rules stabilise that an object shall not reference any object whose lifetime could be shorter than they own. then references among two objects within different scoped regions are allowed only in one direction (i.e., from objects within region r1 to region r2, but never from r2 to r1). In order to support RTSJ component-based applications, we require controlled violations of the assignment rules to have bidirectional references among objects within two different scopes.

Demands are increasing for consolidating multiple OSes on a single multi-core CPU rather than using multiple sets of an OS and a CPU. A VMM enables multiple guest OSes to run concurrently on one CPU while providing separate security domains. We have developed Gandalf a lightweight VMM targeting embedded systems with multi-core CPUs. this paper focuses on the shadow paging mechanism of Gandalf which enables physical memory isolation among guest OSes by separating guest page tables from CPUs, because shadow paging significantly affects VMM overheads and is a key to make a VMM lightweight. We designed and implemented two models of shadow paging, single shadow model and multiple shadow model. the measurement results show that they are realized lightweight.

the paper is organized as follows. Section 2 reviews the terminology of time Petri nets and the definitions of their state spaces. the classical "state classes" construction, preserving markings and LTL properties, is explained in section 3, and its properties discussed. Section 4 explains the richer "strong state classes" abstraction, that allows in addition to decide state reachability properties. Section 5 discusses preservation of branching properties and explains the "atomic state classes" construction. Finally, section 7 discusses a number of related issues and recent results, including extensions of these methods to handle enriched classes of time Petri nets.

the increasing complexity of modern real-time systems and the increasing need for real-time behavior in a broad range of applications such as network- centric warfare, telephony and stock trading has encouraged many developers to consider using real-time Javatrade for systems previously only written in C, Ada or assembly language. the RTSJ standard defines the baseline requirements for a real-time Java implementation, and commercial Java virtual machine (JVM) implementations include additional features such as real-time garbage collectors and real-time compilation (compiling from Java to native code in a manner compatible with real-time), which make the use of Java practical for these applications. this paper describes some of the challenges that will be faced by implementers of the RTSJ standard based on our experience with implementing IBM's RTSJ-compliant J2SE Java virtual machine, called IBM reg WebSphere reg real-time.

As ITS technology evolves, very large volume of traffic data can be obtained in real-time. Traffic data are continuously produced and they can be considered as a kind of stream data. Currently, such traffic data are not maintained permanently because of the storage limitations of operational systems. therefore, it was impossible to compare temporal historical patterns over long time periods. In this paper, we propose a traffic data management scheme, which can handle historical data as well as current data. the proposed scheme is based on the GALIS architecture, which is a cluster-based distributed computing system architecture that consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone. Some experimental results showing performance factors are also explained.
