the technology supporting multiplayer online games (MOGs) has greatly improved in the past few years. this represents great news both for players all over the world and for researchers that are struggling behind tough problems in real-time distributed systems. Indeed, MOGs represent a peculiar class of distributed systems, sharing features, requirements, challenges, and thereby also feasible solutions. To this aim, we focus on issues and state-of art solutions related to a crucial aspect in MOG deployment: the synchronization of its nodes. In particular, we review techniques able to guarantee that the system evolves in a quick and consistent way and highlight how they can be made more effective by exploiting specific game features. To further support this claim, we also present results from an experimental evaluation we performed.

the performance of autonomous vehicles could be drastically improved if ad-hoc networking and suitable real-time coordination is employed to optimize and improve the joint behavior of multiple autonomous units. However, due to ad-hoc connections and the real-time interaction the correctness and safety of such coordinated autonomous units is very hard to ensure. In this paper we present how service- oriented real-time coordination can be employed to achieve this goal. Based on the proper real-time coordination between two or more vehicles captured by a service contract, we focus on structural changes and the instantiation and termination of service contracts which is a crucial prerequisite for a safe system operation. We present how the structural changes and the service contract creation/deletion can be modeled by a well-defined UML subset consisting of class and object diagrams with collaborations as well as well-defined behavioral rules can be verified taking the dynamic structural changes due to the ad-hoc networking as well as the real-time coordination into account. the new verification technique is outlined and the application of the technique for an application example is presented.

time-triggered communication is a favored design strategy for safety-critical systems. However, the startup of time-triggered systems is a significant concern, since the time-line from which fault-tolerance is supported must be established in segmented mediums, e.g. multi-hop networks. the startup problems are particularly challenging since clique formation, i.e. the establishment of disjoint time-triggered communication sets, may be systematically induced. this paper presents an alternative startup solution based upon a braided-ring architecture called BRAIN (braided ring availability integrity network). Segmentation-induced cliques are particularly prevalent in this architecture, since each node presents a potential medium break. the described strategy dramatically improves startup performance in relation to current approaches by leveraging the cooperative action of adjacent nodes during startup and high-integrity data propagation.

Recent years have witnessed the emergence and rapid growth of distributed service infrastructures such as mobile ad hoc networks, P2P, PlanetLab and Grids. In such distributed infrastructures, an entity needs to utilize the services provided by other entities or the infrastructures, where trust is an important factor. there exists a gap between current trust research focusing limitedly on specific applications and a systematic, adaptable and customizable trust framework. the first limitation of current research is the lack of characterizing service-specific trust features. the second limitation lies in the restricted evaluation formulae of trust values. the trust value formulae are usually drawn from a particular mathematical model and may not satisfy some desirable properties. the third limitation is the lack of flexibility and adaptability of trust models. In this paper a comprehensive trust model is presented to address these limitations and provide a trust-based environment for distributed service infrastructures. Our simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the trust model against various attacks.

An important part of implementing device drivers is to control the interrupt facilities of the hardware platform and to program interrupt handlers. Current methods for handling interrupts in Java use a server thread waiting for the VM to signal an interrupt occurrence. It means that the interrupt is handled at a later time, which has some disadvantages. We present constructs that allow interrupts to be handled directly and not at a later point decided by a scheduler. A desirable feature of our approach is that we do not require a native middelware layer but can handle interrupts entirely with Java code. We have implemented our approach using an interpreter and a Java processor, and give an example demonstrating its use.

As Moore's law comes to an end, multi-processor (MP) systems are becoming increasingly important in embedded systems design, hence real-time schedulability analysis for MP systems has become an important research topic. In this paper, we present an exact method for schedulability analysis of global multiprocessor scheduling with either fixed-priority (FP) or earliest-deadline-first (EDF) algorithms using the model-checker NuSMV. Compared to safe but pessimistic schedulability tests based on processor utilization bounds, model-checking can provide an exact answer to the schedulability of a taskset, as well as quantitative information on each task's best-case and worst- case response times.

Recently, the application domains where the development of systems with temporal guarantees is needed have increased. the majority of such domains are dynamic environments where the classical design approach is no longer applicable since it is too pessimistic. thus, new challenges arise to adapt the current methodologies used in different architectural levels to these new environments. New directions and paradigms are needed to allow combining functional flexibility and dynamism with temporal predictability. the current work addresses these new challenges through the exploration of the applicability of concepts from the service oriented paradigm to distributed real-time systems. We propose a concrete system model based on a holistic time-triggered-based approach for design and configuration. Based on this model, we analyse the architectural entities required for two different architectural design approaches: static, when no reconfigurations at run-time are admitted, and dynamic, when these reconfigurations are possible. An exhaustive composition algorithm is also proposed.

Computation, as expressed in modern programming languages, obscures many resource management problems. Memory is provided without bound by stacks and heaps. Power and energy consumption are not the concern of a programmer. Even when these resource management problems are important, there is no way to talk about them within the semantics of a programming language. time, however, is not quite like these other resources. First, barring metaphysical discourse, it is genuinely unbounded. To say that "the available time per unit time is bounded" is tautological, yet this is effectively what people say when they manage it as a bounded resource. Second, time gets expended whether we use it or not. It cannot be conserved and saved for later. this is true up to a point with, say, battery power. Batteries leak, so their power cannot be indefinitely conserved, but designers rarely optimize a system to use as much battery power before it leaks away as they can. Yet that is what they do with time.

A UML profile for Modeling and Analysis of real-time and Embedded systems (MARTE) has been recently standardized by the OMG. this initiative meets the needs of several thales divisions (e.g., aerospace, land and joint and air systems), which develop real-time and embedded systems. CEA LIST, INRIA and thales have been the main contributors to the MARTE standard through the ProMARTE consortium. To foster the deployment of MARTE in thales divisions, we have launched the development of a case study related to a real-time and embedded system using the MARTE adopted specification. As a first step of this study, we make use of a fictive system- the Josefil challenge-to evaluate whether the profile is applicable to the thales current systems and software engineering practices. the purpose of this paper is to report on this first stage and outline the next scheduled activities.

Predictable deployment and configuration (D&C) of components in response to dynamic environmental changes or system mode changes is essential for ensuring open distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system real-time QoS. this paper provides three contributions to research on the predictability of D&C for component-based open DRE systems. First, we describe how the dependency relationships among different components and their criticality levels can cause deployment order inversion of tasks, which impedes deployment predictability. Second, we describe how to minimize D&C latency of mission-critical tasks with a multi-graph dependency tracing and graph recomposition algorithm called CaDAnCE. third, we empirically evaluate the effectiveness of CaDAnCE on a representative open DRE system case study based on NASA Earth Science Enterprise's Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission system. Our results show that CaDAnCE avoids deployment order inversion while incurring negligible (<1%) performance overhead, thereby significantly improving D&C predictability.
