Dependability of complex systems is a critical system-level issue, which is still insufficiently tackled today. We propose here the adoption of an aggressive model-driven development paradigm (AMDD) to adequately capture globally-scoped issues like interoperability and compatibility. AMDD moves most of the recurring problems of compatibility and consistency of a system's design, implementation and evolution from the coding and integration level to the modelling level. In particular it enables an economical treatment of cross-system issues. this approach has proven useful already for the design, realization and test of complex distributed applications. In this paper we discuss the potential and benefits of AMDD and present examples where it is already adopted.

One of the known problems with shared object manipulation in virtual environments is the disruptive effect of network lag in collaboration sessions. Most solutions to this problem revolve around techniques to compensate for this lag at the network communication level. In this article, we examine a different approach: informing the user about the lag, using decorators, and allowing the user to react to it intuitively.

this paper presents a framework for generic modeling of distributed embedded applications. An application is decomposed into services and mapped on a set of distributed nodes, whereas each node hosts one or more services. Each service is described by four interfaces: a real-time input/output, a configuration and planning (CP), and a diagnostic and management (DM) interface. the overall application is described by a cluster configuration description that specifies the interaction of services within and across nodes. the application requirements, the service properties of a node, and the interaction of the services as well as the application mapping are described formally with XML descriptions. the XML format allows a language-neutral and extensible semantic description of interfaces supporting the implementation of context-aware tools for modeling, scheduling, monitoring, simulation, and validation. A central concept of the model is the interface file system (IFS) that acts as a distributed shared memory and transparently implements the interfaces to services from other nodes. In principle, the communication system that updates the data in the IFS data is not bound to a specific implementation as long as it fulfills the given timing requirements. the presented concepts are applied in a case study that uses the time-triggered fieldbus protocol TTP/A for the implementation of a small sensor fusion application.

the Experimentation Command and Control Interface (XC21) project has developed an architecture for a Web-service based viewer/controller for use with distributed simulations supporting military experiments. As part of this activity, a capability for Interest Management with three functions is being created. the functions are Role Based Access Control (RBAC), Area of Interest Management (AOIM), and Aggregation Interest Management (AGIM). While the approach is compatible with High Level Architecture (HLA) for Modeling and Simulation, primary information exchange takes place using the Web services, i.e. software-to-software messaging interfaces that operate over Web protocols such as XML/SOAP. this paper presents a Web Services Internet Management (WSIM) architecture designed to achieve these capabilities in a way that is compatible with simulations using the HLA. the protocols and information flow structure are described, along with the architecture's design rationale, interest management rules, and plans for its implementation. the paper concludes with a description of potential for future development of WSIM, including adoption of the Command and Control Information Exchange Data Model (C21EDM) and use of Overlay Multicast for data distribution.

the Grid provides a new and unrivaled technology for large scale distributed simulation as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. this panel paper presents the views of four researchers in the area of distributed Simulation and the Grid. Together we try to identify the main research issues involved in applying Grid technology to distributed simulation and the key future challenges that need to be solved to achieve this goal. Such challenges include not only technical challenges, but also political ones such as management methodology for the Grid and the development of standards. the benefits of the Grid to end-user simulation modelers also are discussed.

Navigation in 3D world has reached its pinnacle with the advent of several technologies like JAVA, XML, WEB SERVICES, VRML, X3D etc. A lot of efforts have been given to visualize and navigate in virtual mall, cities, digital libraries etc. Most of them visualize only static objects. We designed a Virtual reality (VR) Tool, called Learning object Repository Navigation and Authoring in Virtual environment (LORNAV) that extracts Learning object Metadata (LOM) dynamically from repositories and creates 3D representation of these objects. the proposed tool provides several facilities such as personalized navigation allowing a user to view content that is of interest to him. It also helps users to create new aggregated Learning objects (LOs) from existing ones in a 3D Environment to be presented in SMIL format.

distributed simulation cloning technology is designed to analyze alternative scenarios of a distributed simulation concurrently within the same simulation execution session. One important goal of the technology is to optimize execution by avoiding repeated computation amongst independent scenarios. Our research is concerned with the cloning of High Level Architecture (HLA) based distributed simulations. A decoupled federate architecture is designed to support correct federate cloning at runtime. A federate may spawn clones to explore different scenarios at a decision point. To address the complexity of the overall cloning-enabled distributed simulation due to increasing scenario spawning, we have devised an efficient and precise scheme to identify and partition scenarios. It is desirable to use an incremental cloning mechanism to replicate only those federates whose states will be affected while the rest remain intact and are shared amongst the original and new scenarios. Our incremental cloning mechanism ensures accurate sharing and initiates cloning only when strictly necessary.

Group communication in large-scale interactive applications such as real-time conferencing and collaboration, networked virtual environments (e.g. massively multi-player games) requires efficient, low-overhead group communication mechanisms. In this paper we consider the application-level (or end-system) multicast and propose a stateless group communication mechanism together with its tree building algorithms. Stateless multicast reduces the control signaling of dynamic multicast groups linearly with the group size. To support interactive applications involving a large number of dynamic multicast groups, the application level multicast uses stateless forwarding within clusters of network nodes and hierarchical aggregation of multicast group membership. We show that dynamic tree construction achieve low computation overhead with a controlled degradation of the end-to-end data path performance.

distributed Interactive Applications (DIAs) have been gaining commercial success in recent years due to the widespread appeal of networked multiplayer computer games. Within these games, participants interact with each other and their environment, producing complex behavioural patterns that evolve over time. these patterns are non-linear, and often appear to exhibit dependencies under certain conditions. In this paper, we analyse the behavioural patterns of two users interacting in a DIA. Our motivation behind this analysis is to construct models of user behaviour that can be used within Entity-State-Update (ESU) mechanisms. By representing their behaviour as time-series datasets, we investigate the use of simple statistical dependence measures to help partition the datasets and identify three different types of behavioural states exhibited by the two users. It is our intention that future research on ESU mechanisms can utilize this behavioural partitioning to reduce the network traffic in a DIA based on a hybrid-model approach.

the hybrid strategy-based modeling approach is a method for reducing the number of network packets that need to be transmitted to maintain global consistency in distributed Interactive Applications. It combines a short-term model such as dead reckoning with a long-term strategy model. A key aspect of this approach is to determine strategies that users adopt in navigating the simulated environment to satisfy some objective or goal. Computer-generated artificial entities called BOTS, navigate by employing an Artificial Intelligence technique called path finding. this paper proposes using the A* pathfinding algorithm to automatically compute strategies that human users might take through the simulated environment. Since the A* algorithm operates on a graph representation of the environment and because of the real-time constraints imposed on distributed Interactive Applications, the paper also carries out a comparative analysis of two extreme graph representations of the environment - a standard regular grid and a minimal grid representation. the comparison shows that the minimal grid leads to an order of magnitude reduction in real-time computation compared to the regular grid. In addition the paths computed using the minimal grid and the A* algorithm are used to determine strategy models as part of the hybrid strategy-based modeling approach. It is shown that this reduces the network traffic required to maintain global consistency of entity dynamics in two simulated environments.
