We discuss how to invoke a method on multiple object replicas in a quorum-based way. Suppose each instance of a method t on replicas of an object x invokes another method u on replicas in a quorum of an object y. Here, the method u is redundantly invoked multiple times on some replicas of the object y. If each instance of the method t issues a method to its own quorum, more number of replicas are manipulated than the quorum number this is quorum expansion. We discuss a protocol to invoke methods on replicas in a nested manner without the redundant invocation and quorum expansion. We evaluate the protocol on how many replicas are manipulated and requests are issued.

In this paper, we present a systems engineering methodology for constructing certifiable real-time distributed systems. In the proposed approach, an architectural and algorithmic solution to an application problem is designed by considering the "'weakest" models including the weakest asynchronous computational model and multimodal arrival model. Furthermore, timeliness properties are described using Jensen's benefit accrual predicates. Once a system solution is designed, timeliness properties are established by constructing necessary feasibility conditions that are expressed as non-valued predicates. the predicates are quantified and verified to produce the specification of a certified solution. We illustrate the approach by considering a packet transmission problem that desire soft timeliness. We present a certifiable solution to this problem that consists of switched Ethernet, a soft real-time packet scheduling algorithm (that was previously developed), and feasibility conditions.

distributed control systems (DCSs) consisting of a plant, a controller composed of many devices, and an open network interconnecting devices, are now used in many automation areas. For assuring the control performance under the heavy traffic on the network, the simulation of DCS is strongly needed. In the case of DCSs for controlling a mechanical plant, the graphical and cooperative simulation between the controller model and the plant model becomes important to verify the sequence of motions of the plant. For this purpose, we propose a systematic object-oriented-based DCS modeling procedure to efficiently and uniformly develop the DCS simulation model. From this procedure, we can describe the formal description of DCS simulation model based on five object-oriented design patterns which describe the structure and behavior of the DCS. We also propose an event chain mechanism between the statechart-based controller model and the graphical plant model. Finally, the cooperative DCS simulation software is developed by! using the Java 3D API.

Devices in ubiquitous computing environments are usually embedded, wearable, and handheld, have resource constraints, and are all connected to each other through wireless connections and other computers possibly through fixed network infrastructures, such as the Internet. these devices may form numerous webs of short-range and often low-power mobile ad hoc networks to exchange information. distributed object computing (DOC) middleware technologies have been successful in promoting high quality and reusable distributed software for enterprise-oriented environments. In order to reap the same benefit in ubiquitous computing environments, it is important to note that the natural interactions among distributed objects in ubiquitous computing environments are quite different due to various factors, such as bandwidth constraints, unpredictable device mobility, network topology change, and context-sensitivity (or situation-awareness) of application objects. Hence, the interactions among distributed objects tend to be more spontaneous and short-lived rather than predictable and long-term. In this paper, a middleware protocol, RKF, to facilitate distributed object-based application software to interact in an ad hoc fashion in ubiquitous computing environments is presented. RKF addresses both spontaneous object discovery and context-sensitive object data exchange. Our experimental results, based on RKF's implementation and evaluation inside the object request broker of our RCSM middleware test bed, indicate that it is lightweight, has good performance, and can be easily used in PDA-like devices.

We propose a comprehensive model of an API-set (application program interface) that allows developers to envision and realize a variety of distributed real-time multimedia applications as networks of easily understood and analyzable high-level real-time distributed computing objects, called time-triggered message-triggered objects (TMOs). this model reflects our view that any multimedia application can be represented by a set of properly networked TMOs. the software architecture and structuring model basically consists of four building blocks, which are the single stream TMO, the compound stream TMO, the conductor TMO, and the stream connection. the definitions and roles of these building blocks are discussed and illustrated by applying them in structuring a multi-party audio-video teleconferencing service system. © 2003 ieee.

Safety-critical systems have typically been designed in a static fashion, preventing run-time changes in the operational parameters that could possibly lead to unpredictable and unsafe operating scenarios. However, there is a growing demand for flexibility, mainly to support evolving requirements, simplify maintenance and repair, and improve the efficiency in using system resources. this last aspect is directly related with operational flexibility and impacts on the system cost, rising, thus, its interest. this paper discusses at a conceptual level the motivations and problems associated with introducing operational flexibility in distributed hard real-time systems with critical safety requirements. then, it discusses the advantages arising from such flexibility and presents a general architecture that can be used to support it on such systems. this architecture has been the basis for a set of recent protocols, namely FTT-CAN and FTT-Ethernet.

Execution time analysis is an essential verification activity during real-time system construction. this activity can be performed dynamically through search-based analysis techniques such as evolutionary algorithms. Evolutionary algorithms have already been successfully used for execution-time analysis under the traditional procedural development paradigm. this paper describes a first attempt in making search-based execution-time analysis techniques also applicable under the more recent object-oriented and component-based software development paradigms. Here, their application is more difficult compared with the traditional procedural development approaches because object-based architectures are inherently encapsulated, and they often represent state machines. this work proposes a solution that makes search techniques applicable in real-time system development with object technology. It is based on inbuilt testing artefacts and on the execution and optimisation of an object's invocation history through a genetic algorithm. We demonstrate the applicability of the technique through a simple object-oriented real-time system.

Hard real-time code is special purpose code whose worst-case performance (worst-case execution time ... WCET) needs to be good and easy to predict. Despite these specific demands on the temporal properties of hard real-time code, real-time programmers often use the same algorithms and programming techniques that have proven effective for non real-time applications. this paper explains the different temporal requirements imposed on real-time resp. non real-time code, and outlines why traditional (non real-time) programming tends to produce code that (a) has a high WCET and (b) is hard to analyse for its WCET Based on these observations the paper proposes an unconventional programming strategy that avoids the shortcomings of traditional coding and yields code that is well-suited for hard real-time systems, i.e., its WCET is short and predictable. the evaluation of a number of examples demonstrates the advantages of the proposed programming strategy on WCET and its predictability.

We present the modeling and analysis of distributed autonomous robots using the specification language for hybrid systems, called CHARON. Coordination between distributed autonomous robots has attracted researchers of embedded and hybrid systems, since there has been increasing demand for multiple robots working together in a dynamically changing or unknown environment to carry out missions such as search and rescue, cooperative localization, and scouting and reconnaissance. To maximize the capability of performing tasks collaboratively as a team, formation control is one of crucial parts in developing distributed autonomous robots. In this paper formation control of a team of robots is modeled using CHARON and the model is analyzed using simulation with assertion checking capability of the CHARON toolset.
