this paper presents our experiments for integrating OMG MIOP (Mullicast Inter-ORB Protocol) specifications into a CORBA ORB. We proposed an integration model which allows the coexistence of two different protocol stacks (IIOP/TCP/IP and MIOP/UDP/IP multicast), making possible a large spectrum of middleware support for distributed objects communication. that integration model is discussed in this paper, giving evidence of the compatibility of our approach with the CORBA specifications. We also do some considerations about the implementation of this model in a CORBA compliant ORB. © 2003 ieee.

object-oriented languages support many modem programming paradigms such as information hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, and dynamic binding. As a result, software systems implemented in OO languages are more reusable and reliable than those in non-OO. Many legacy software systems were created before OO programming became popular and needed to be redesigned and updated to OO programs. the process of abstracting OO designs from the procedural source code was often done manually or with limited assistance from program structural diagrams. Most reengineering focuses on the functionality of the original program, and the OO redesign often results in a completely new design based on the designers' understanding of the original program. Such an approach is not sufficient, for it not only, takes time and effort for designers to become familiar with the original program, but the approach itself is also mistake-prone due to the human involvement. this paper presents a computer-aided semi-automatic method that abstracts OO designs from the original procedural source code. More specifically, it is a method for OO redesign based on program structural diagrams, visualization, and execution slice. We conducted a case study by applying this method to an inventory management software system. Results indicate that our method can effectively and efficiently abstract an appropriate OO design out of the original C code as well as re-generate part of the system in C++ code based on this new OO design.

the paper presents a low cost embedded hardware and software architecture that makes use of COTS components to support distributed real-time embedded systems. the proposed architecture addresses a common problem in conventional architectures: undesirable timing variations in application's temporal behavior due to overload caused by operating system activities when dealing with concurrent and time-triggered processes. the proposed architecture makes use of a 32 bit high performance microcontroller and the open source code operating system for embedded applications uClinux and it enhances these with extensions to better cope with distributed real-time systems development. © 2003 ieee.

We present a framework that will enable scalable analysis and design of graceful degradation in distributed embedded systems. We define graceful degradation in terms of utility. A system that gracefully degrades suffers a proportional loss of system utility as individual software and hardware components fail. However, explicitly designing a, system to gracefully degrade;i.e. handle all possible combinations of component failures, becomes impractical for systems with more than a few components. We avoid this exponential complexity of component combinations by exploiting the structure of the system architecture to partition components into subsystems. We view each subsystem as a configuration of components that changes when components are removed or added. thus, a subsystem's utility changes when components fail or are repaired. We then view the system as a composition of subsystems that each contribute to overall system utility. We demonstrate the scalability of our framework by applying it to an example automobile navigation system. Using this framework, we aim to improve system dependability by identifying architectural properties that enhance a system's ability to gracefully degrade.

In distributed applications, a group of multiple processes cooperate by exchanging multimedia objects with each other. the objects are decomposed into a sequence of messages, which are units of data transmission in a network. Following the causality relation among multimedia objects, we define novel types of causally precedent relations among messages decomposed from objects transmitted in a group of multiple processes. Only messages required to be causally ordered at an object level, are ordered in each process. this means that the overhead to causally deliver multimedia objects in a group can be reduced. We discuss the data transmission procedure. © 2003 ieee.

the PPTR (primary passive TMO replication) scheme is a passive real-time object replication scheme, which is based on the TMO (time-triggered message-triggered object) real-time object model. Compared to the active object replication schemes, the passive object replication schemes typically require fewer processor resources, but have longer fault recovery times. this paper describes a relatively simple and somewhat restrictive but still quite broadly applicable version of the PPTR scheme and its implementation into a real-time middleware architecture, ROAFTS. the PPTR scheme is compared against another existing active real-time object replication scheme supported by the ROAFTS middleware architecture. © 2003 ieee.

Atomic Broadcast (where all processes deliver broadcast messages in the same order) is a very useful group communication primitive for building fault-tolerant distributed systems. this paper presents an atomic broadcast protocol that can be claimed to be optimal in terms of failure detection, resilience, and latency the protocol requires only the weakest of the useful failure detectors for liveness, and permits upto (n-1)/2 processes to crash in a system of n processes;at most two communication steps and n broadcasts are needed in a run during which process crashes and failure-suspicions do not occur We also introduce the notion of Notifying Broadcast which can reduce the message overhead further in 'nice' runs in which all processes are operational and communication delays do not exceed the bound assumed. If nice runs persist, the average message overhead is just one broadcast. that is, the protocol extracts no message overhead for providing crash-tolerance if process failures and unanticipated fluctuations in communication delays do not occur We are currently implementing our protocol as a CORBA component. All known ORBs use HOP as the standard protocol for inter-process communication, which in turn uses TCP/IP as the common transport protocol. It turns out that the Notifying Broadcast is straightforward to implement on top of TCP transport layer.

this paper presents SALE, a middleware platform for mission-critical applications built upon the CORBA architecture and its extensions for real-time (RT-CORBA), fault tolerance (FT-CORBA) and security (CORBASec). the SALE platform provides different reliability, security and real-time properties, which are specified by applications as quality of service (QoS) requirements. Preliminary results obtained through the implementation of this platform allow us to use it as an infrastructure for business-to-business applications. this infrastructure provides a multi-agent system for production scheduling of virtual enterprises, in which timing requirements must be enforced in order to execute a manufacturing process cooperatively. © 2003 ieee.

the complexity of building and validating software is a growing challenge for developers of distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) applications. While DRE applications are increasingly based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software elements, substantial time and effort are spent integrating these elements into applications. Integration challenges stem largely from a lack of higher level abstractions for composing complex applications. As a result, considerable application-specific "glue code" must be rewritten for each successive DRE application. this paper makes three contributions to the study of composing reusable middleware from standard components in DRE applications: it (1) describes the limitations of current approaches in middleware composition, (2) discusses the minimum set of requirements required of reusable middleware components, and (3) presents recurring patterns for software composition as applied to CIAO (Component-Integrated ACE ORB), our open-source component model implementation. © 2003 ieee.

Many network events need to be handled in a timely fashion. However, current practices are not sufficient to support timely handling of network events mainly due to the lack of a real-time network management model and facilities. In this paper, we propose a network management system, named a real-time distributed network management (RTDNM), in which the telecommunication management network (TMN) model and the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) model are incorporated to support network management facilities and timely handling of network events. In order to realize RTDNM, temporal characteristics of managed objects in a network are modeled and CMIS/CMIP, a network management protocol used in TMN, is annotated whit real-time constraints so that timely handling of network events can be supported. A message scheduling scheme for network management is proposed to guarantee timeliness for critical network events. Finally, we present the design of our RTDNM and show current results with a prototype implementation. the scheme presented turned out to be effective for timely handling of network events. © 2003 ieee.
