Position information of moving objects plays a vital role in many pervasive applications. therefore, moving objects databases (MODs), which can manage trajectory data of a number objects, are used in many pervasive systems. A crucial problem with MODs is how to efficiently track a remote object's trajectory in real-time, i.e. how to continuously report the sensed trajectory data to the MOD with minimal effort. For this purpose, we present a prototypical implementation of the Generic Remote Trajectory Simplification (GRTS) protocol, which optimizes storage consumption, processing, and communication costs. Our prototypical system includes a fully functional MOD as well as map-based mobile applications for subnotebooks and smartphones to illustrate the functioning of GRTS. © 2010 ieee.

It is widely believed that most Recognition and Mining (RM) workloads can easily take advantage of parallel computing platforms because these workloads are data-parallel. Contrary to this popular belief, we present RM workloads for which conventional parallel implementations scale poorly on multi-core platforms. We identify off-chip memory transfers and overheads in the parallel runtime library as the primary bottlenecks that limit speedups to be well below the ideal linear speedup expected for data-parallel workloads. To achieve improved parallel scalability, we identify and exploit several interesting properties of RM workloads - sparsity of model updates, low spatial locality among model updates, presence of insignificant computations, and the inherently self-healing nature of these algorithms in the presence of errors. We leverage these domain-specific characteristics to improve parallel scalability in two major ways. First, we utilize data dependency relaxation to simultaneously execute multiple training iterations in parallel, thereby increasing the granularity of the parallel tasks and significantly lowering the run-time overheads of fine-grained threading. Second, we strategically drop selected computations that are insignificant to the accuracy of the final result, but account for a disproportionately large amount of off-chip (memory and coherence) traffic. through the application of the proposed techniques, we show that much higher speedups are possible on multi-core platforms for two important RM applications - document search using semantic indexing, and eye detection in images using generalized learning vector quantization. On an 8-core platform, we achieve application speedups of 5.5× and 7.3× compared to sequential implementations. Compared to conventional parallel implementations of these applications using Intel's TBB, the proposed techniques result in 4.3× and 4.9× improvements. Based on the arbiter template developed in, we presented an efficient, modular, and scalable decentralized parallel design of a new multi-facet arbiter. Moreover, with this modular and reusable hardware design, we have implemented a parametric arbiter generator that automatically generates various multi-facet arbiters. With the decentralized parallel design and the generator, not only a fastest and smallest round-robin arbiter but also other type arbiters were designed and generated on the fly. the experiment results were given to show the designs' excellent performances.

GPS based navigation systems became popular in dedicated handheld devices, and are now also found in modern cell phones, and other small personal devices. A key element of any navigation system is fast and effective route finding, and this depends heavily on Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm. Dijkstra's algorithm is serial in nature; prior efforts to accelerate it through parallel processing have had almost no success. In this paper, we present a practical approach to extract small-scale parallelism by shifting priority queue operations to a secondary tightly-coupled processor. We obtain a substantial speedup on real-world graphs (in particular, road maps), allowing the development of navigation systems that are more responsive, and also lower in total power consumption.

Many signal processing applications demand for highly energy efficient flexible implementations. In this paper, we propose a novel Domain Specific Instruction-set Processor (DSIP) architecture template which is tuned to deploy in the targeted domain of on-line surveillance. the architecture, when implemented using a 40-nm CMOS standard cell library, executes a representative test vehicle with an energy efficiency of near ly 900 MOPS/mW including instruction and data memories. this is about 20 times higher than a state-of-the-ar t low power DSP architecture and less than a factor 2 below a heavily optimized ASIC realization for the same application benchmark.

this article proposes a distributed architecture designed for management of crisis situations were multiple actors are involved from various organizations with different competences and communicating over IP-based networks including wireless devices. In such settings requirements exist for secure communication and trusted collection of data from various sources. the role of agents in the proposed architecture is primarily coordinated collection of information. In respect to requirements the overall agent infrastructure must be a secure, robust and fail resistant system. Required level of trust for agents is based on a special hardware module which provides trusted computing functionality. In the article we describe such architecture in terms of detailed requirements, design and decomposition to subsystems. We also provide a sample scenario use case inspired by concrete crisis situation. the architecture herein described is being used in scope of an EU integrated project called Secricom therefore we briefly describe the integration points with other systems involved in the project. We conclude with current state of the architecture implementation and with further plans concerning the development of the described architecture.

Chip multiprocessors provide an opportunity for continuing performance growth in the face of limited single-thread parallelism. Although the best design path for such chips remains open, application-specific core designs have shown promise. this work considers the design of an application-specific core for a virtual execution environment. We use Pin, a widely-used dynamic binary instrumentation system, as a representative process-level VEE. through a combination of microarchitectural simulation and hardware performance counters, we profile the VEE in terms of cache behavior, functional unit usage, and branch predictor behavior, and compare its performance to the performance of benchmark applications. We then show that running the VEE on our specialized core uses up to 15% less power per cycle and up to 5% less energy overall than running the same VEE on a general-purpose core.
