distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems often require support for multiple simultaneous quality of service (QoS) properties, such as real-timeliness and fault tolerance, that operate within resource constrained environments. these resource constraints motivate the need for a lightweight middleware infrastructure, while the need for simultaneous QoS properties require the middleware to provide fault tolerance capabilities that respect time-critical needs of DRE systems. Conventional middleware solutions, such as Fault-tolerant CORBA (FT-CORBA) and Continuous Availability API for J2EE, have limited utility for DRE systems because they are heavyweight (e.g., the complexity of their feature-rich fault tolerance capabilities consumes excessive runtime resources), yet incomplete (e.g., they lack mechanisms that enable fault tolerance while maintaining real-time predictability). this paper provides three contributions to the development and standardization of lightweight real-time and fault-tolerant middleware for DRE systems. First, we discuss the challenges in realizing real-time fault-tolerant solutions for DRE systems using contemporary middleware. Second, we describe recent progress towards standardizing a CORBA lightweight fault-tolerance specification for DRE systems. third, we present the architecture of FLARe, which is a prototype based on the OMG real-time fault-tolerant CORBA middleware standardization efforts that is lightweight (e.g., leverages only those server- and client-side mechanisms required for real-time systems) and predictable (e.g., provides fault-tolerant mechanisms that respect time-critical performance needs of DRE systems).

this book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8thifipconference on e-Business, e-Services, and e-Society (I3E 2008) held in Tokyo, Japan on September 24-26, 2008. the ifip series publishes state-of-the-art results in the sciences and technologies of information and communication. the scope of the series includes: foundations of computer science; software theory and practice; education; computer applications in technology; communication systems; systems modeling and optimization; information systems; computers and society; computer systems technology; security and protection in information processing systems; artificial intelligence; and human-computer interaction. Proceedings and post-proceedings of refereed internationalconferences in computer science and interdisciplinary fields are featured. these results often precede journal publication and represent the most current research. the principal aim of the ifip series is to encourage education and the dissemination and exchange of information about all aspects of computing.

A multitude of different middleware technologies exist for distributed object computing (doe). However well-known doc-middleware has practically not established itself in the context of wide-area distributed computing. Prominent examples like CORBA, COM+ or Java/RMI use quite similar distributed object models, that can be mapped pairwise with bridges. But they differ in their meta-programming functionality including methods for object generation, distribution, location, reflection and life-cycle management. A more high-level, abstract model that encapsulates this functionality and that allows the integration with existing doc-middleware and web systems can be a central prerequisite for emerging a web of objects. this paper introduces the design of a meta-programming middleware and its mapping to and application with existing doc- and web-technologies respectively.

the study of complex networks has acquired great importance during the last years because of the diffusion of several phenomena which can be described by these networks. Community detection is one of the most investigated problem in this area, however only a few solutions for detecting communities in a distributed and dynamic environment have been presented. In this paper we propose SONIC-MAN, a distributed protocol to detect and manage communities in a peer-to-peer dynamic environment. Our approach is particularly targeted to distributed online social networks and its main goal is to discover communities in the ego-network of the users. SONIC-MAN is based on a Temporal Trade-off approach and exploits a set of super-peers for the management of the communities. the paper presents a set of evaluations proving that SONIC-MAN is able to detect dynamic communities in a distributed setting and to return results close a centralized approach based on the same basic algorithm for community discovering.

To maintain availability and responsiveness, mobile applications sharing data often work on their own copy and transmit local changes to other participants. Existing systems for recording, transmitting and reconciling concurrent changes are usually ad-hoc and specific to particular applications. In contrast, we present Joyce;a general application programming framework for creating highly dynamic mobile, collaborative applications. the framework abstracts application semantics using an action-constraint formal model and provides communication and consistency services based on this model. the framework exposes an interface that allows application programmers to concentrate on core functionality without worrying about these issues. applications made withthe framework can run seamlessly across changing combination of devices, users and synchrony. We discuss the principles behind the frameworks its implementation and evaluate its utility by creating a complex, shared application.

Nowadays, wireless links are shared between clients and the available bandwidth fluctuates, so the video stream must be adaptive in order to optimize the transmitted quality. In this article, we present a tool called MoVie to distribute multimedia streaming on large wireless networks. the two main aspects of MoVie deal with network access and managing systems. the management of video streams is realized using video caches linked to a physical area. this article describes the policy used to take into account the mobility of the clients and the hierarchical aspect of the streams by preparing the neighboring caches to receive roaming clients.

In an E-learning scenario, educational resources, such as course documents, videos, test-bases, courseware, and teacher information etc., are shared across different schools. DartGrid is built upon several techniques from both Semantic Web and Grid research areas, and is intended to offer a semantic grid toolkit for data integration. In this paper, a Semantic Grid for E-leaning based on DartGrid is introduced, and it provides a Semantic-based distributed infrastructure for E-learning resource sharing. We explore the essential and fundamental roles played by RDF semantics for e-learning, and implement a set of semantically enabled tools and grid services for E-learnng such as semantic browser, ontology service, semantic query service, and semantic registration service.
