In this paper we investigate the network lifetime maximization problem in a delay-tolerant wireless sensor network with a mobile sink by exploiting a nontrivial tradeoff between the network lifetime and the data delivery delay. We formulate the problem as a joint optimization problem that consists of finding a trajectory for the mobile sink and designing an energy-efficient routing protocol to route sensing data to the sink, subject to the bounded delay on data delivery and the given potential sink location space. Due to NP-hardness of the problem, we then propose a novel optimization framework, which not only prolongs the network lifetime but also improves the other performance metrics including the network scalability, robustness, and the average delivery delay. We finally conduct extensive experiments by simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm against other heuristics. the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the others significantly in terms of network lifetime prolongation.

the post disaster mitigation is the immediate task to be carried out in disaster affected areas in order to reduce the extent of damage and for early rehabilitation and reconstruction. this paper proposes a design framework for an optimal control strategy to efficiently perform surveillance over a wide disaster hit area using a network of flying robots to determine the extent of damage promptly so that the rescue operation can be carried out efficiently. the main focus of the paper is to develop a low cost and an adaptive energy efficient strategy with less power dissipation and delay compared to traditional methods. the routing protocol proposed in the paper efficiently determines the best route by taking account of the residual energy, signal strength and various environmental factors. Simulation results show that the proposed routing scheme achieves much higher performance than the classical routing protocols.

Recently, it was argued that the true potential of sensor network services can be realized only if they become an integral part of a larger context-aware distributed system. the benefit is that, the intergration allows sensor network services to be seamlessly accessible to remote users through devices that they are already familiar with. this integration can be simplified using a publish-subscribe system. However, the wireless medium facilitates eavesdropping and some data is sensitive. this makes the security extremely important. Furthermore, sensor nodes have limited power and processing resources, so standard security mechanisms, which are heavy in weight and resource consumption, are unsuitable. these challenges increase the need to develop comprehensive and secure solutions that achieve wider protection, while maintaining desirable network performance. In this paper, we propose a secure publish-subscribe-based in-network data storage service in WSNs to provide different security requirements such as confidentiality, authentication, integrity, availability, and authorized access.

the average consensus algorithm is a well known distributed process in which the nodes iteratively communicate with the nodes within their communication range in order to obtain an estimation of the global average. these repeated communications, when performed in a uniformly randomly deployed network, such as a Wireless Sensor network, lead to several nodes consuming much more power than others, thus reducing the lifetime of the whole network. this paper proposes a fully distributed method that allows the network nodes to suitably decide which subset of communications provides the best performance during the consensus process in terms of convergence time and power efficiency. Our method simultaneously improves both the convergence of the consensus algorithm and the lifetime of the whole network. Moreover, as a benchmark, we propose a convex optimization problem whose results can be compared with those obtained by our distributed approach. Simulation results are presented to show the efficiency of our proposal, comparing our two methods with existing approaches in the related literature.

Avast majority of servers in classical data centers of all scales are underutilized for a significant amount of time. these servers operate at a very low rate of efficiency and consume huge amounts of energy. In this work, we investigate how dynamic consolidation and workload forecasting can be exploited to increase the energy efficiency of a virtualized, heterogeneous server infrastructure. We base our evaluation on real utilization traces of a production system operated by the University of Vienna's central IT department. the traces contain the CPU utilization of more than 30 VMs over a period of four weeks. these VMs offer all kinds of services to students, staff and other visitors. We use these traces to investigate a business infrastructure scenario, where energy costs are just one of several parts of operational costs. We present a novel cost model using configurable penalties for the most important operational cost categories. We compare the total costs of a bin-packing related heuristic and a new genetic VM mapping algorithm used for dynamic consolidation (GA) and load balancing (LB). We tradeoff forecasting against resource reserves in combination with shorter measurement intervals. We demonstrate the flexibility of a genetic algorithm. the GA and LB approaches are directly influenced by penalizing cost parameters. Our cost model allows easy adaption by infrastructure operators to implement custom priorities and optimization goals. © 2012 ifip.

In this paper we consider large scale distributed committee machines where no local data exchange is possible between neural network modules. Regularization neural networks are used for both the modules as well as the combiner committee in an embedded architecture. After the committee training no module will know anything else except its own local data. this privacy preserving obligation is a challenging problem for trainable combiners but crucial in real world applications. Only classifiers in the form of binaries or agents can be sent to others to validate their local data and sent back average classification rates. From this fully distributed and privacy preserving mutual validation a coarse-grained matrix can be formed to map all members. We demonstrate that it is possible to fully exploit this mutual validation matrix to efficiently train another regularization network as a meta learner combiner for the committee. © 2012 ifip international Federation for Information Processing.

CPU/GPU heterogeneous computing has become a tendency in scientific and engineering computing. the conventional computation models cannot be used to estimate the application running time under the CPU/GPU heterogeneous computing environment. In this paper, a new model named mHLogGP is presented on the basis of mPlogP, LogGP and LogP. In mHLogGP, he communication and memory access is abstracted based on the characteristic of CPU/GPU hybrid computing cluster. this model can be used to study the behavior of application, estimate the execution time and guide the optimization of parallel programs. the results show that the predicted running time approaches to the actual execution of program. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2012.

In the literature various two level interconnection networks are proposed using hypercubes or star graphs. In this paper, a new two level interconnection network topology called the Metastar denoted as Mstar(k,m) is introduced. the proposed network takes the star graph as basic building blocks. Here, the network at the lower level is a star but at the higher level the network is a cube. Its various topological parameters such as packing density, degree, diameter, cost, average distance and hamiltonicity are investigated. Message routing and broadcasting algorithms are also proposed. Performance analysis in terms of topological parameters is done and the proposed network is proved to be a suitable candidate for large scale computing.

this paper presents a fast parallel garner algorithm for Chinese remainder theorem. the variables in garner algorithm are divided into public parameters that are constants for fixed module and private parameters that represent random input integers. We design the parallel garner algorithm by analyzing the data dependencies of these arithmetic operations for computing public variables and private variables. Time complexities and speedup ratios of the parallel algorithm and the sequential algorithm are calculated to make the quantitative comparison based on our previous work about some fundamental parallel algorithms. the performance evaluation shows high efficiency of the proposed parallel algorithm compared to the sequential one. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2012.

the design of wireless sensor networks for detection applications is a challenging task. On one hand, classical work on decentralized detection does not consider practical wireless sensor networks. On the other hand, practical sensor network design approaches that treat the signal processing and communication aspects of the sensor network separately result in suboptimal detection performance because network resources are not allocated efficiently. In this work, we attempt to cross the gap between theoretical decentralized detection work and practical sensor network implementations. We consider a cross-layer approach, where the quality of information, channel state information, and residual energy information are included in the design process of tree-topology sensor networks. the design objective is to specify which sensors should contribute to a given detection task, and to calculate the relevant communication parameters. We compare two design schemes: (1) direct transmission, where raw data are transmitted to the fusion center without compression, and (2) in-network processing, where data is quantized before transmission. For both schemes, we design the optimal transmission control policy that coordinates the communication between sensor nodes and the fusion center. We show the performance improvement for the proposed design schemes over the classical decoupled and maximum throughput design approaches.
