In this paper, we explore a novel online packet scheduling model based on vehicular network applications. the model incorporates multiple networks with non-persistent connectivity where we only know which networks are available at the current time. Our goal is to achieve the minimum requirement of vehicular application classes and also maximize the throughput of these classes. NS3 simulations were performed to analyze the behavior of our scheduling model by comparing it with the standard scheduling using only LTE and WiFi networks, as well as the handover between these two networks. We observed that the proposed scheduling model had a low packet loss and low delay.

Mobile voice-assisted services are currently experiencing strong growth. However, occasionally low real-time quality of service within mobile networks could have significant negative impact on quality of experience of users interacting with automated voice services. Latency may grow to unacceptable levels and speech recognition and synthesis might suffer. We present a methodology of mitigating such effects by monitoring the immediate connection status and adapting various parameters of the SIP communication setup (buffer size, codec) in response, thus radically improving user experience. We demonstrate practical usability by implementation and testing in a real mobile network and by performing multiple test scenarios when interacting with a state-of-the-art automated voice platform.

the latency of network switching is of particular importance for fine-grained communication processes such as memory access. We propose a specialized network switch that reduces communication latency because many scientific computing applications have specific access patterns. In this paper, we describe the basic concept and design of our reconfigurable shared memory network. Our evaluation results show that there is no significant difference between the port-to-port latency of our network switch and that of an 8-port InfiniBand network switch. Furthermore, the hardware size of the routing stack in the network switch does not increase with the number of nodes. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

this paper presents our new design and implementation of a configuration verification system called ConfVS. With the increasing complexity of network configuration, verifying network behavior has become a highly time-consuming and error-prone process. Much research effort has been made to tackle this challenge. In this paper, we propose a formalization scheme based on binary decision diagram to model the entire network behavior specified by diverse configuration requirements (e.g., security policies, routing policies, and address translation rules), and design a set of algorithms to efficiently verify the compliance of network behavior to the requirements. Our experiments show that ConfVS can validate thousands of network devices configured by millions rules with ten times improved efficiency when compared to several well-known existing solutions.

this paper presents a portable optimization for MPI communications, called PRAcTICaL-MPI (Portable Adaptive Compression Library- MPI). PRAcTICaL-MPI reduces the data volume exchanged among processes by using lossless compression and offers two main advantages. Firstly, it is independent of the MPI implementation and the application used. Secondly, it allows for turning the compression on and off and selecting the most appropriate compression algorithm at runtime, depending on the characteristics of each message and on network performance. We have validated PRAcTICaL-MPI in different MPI implementations and HPC clusters. the evaluation shows that compressing MPI messages with the best algorithm and only when it is worthwhile, we obtain a great reduction in the overall execution time for many of the scenarios considered.

Wireless interference does not necessarily result in the lost of all the information of the desired signal. In this paper, we study the signature allocation in wireless networks by exploiting the retained signal feature under interference. the commonly used node signature includes MAC address and PN sequence. However, both of them take a lot of time to identify the signature when the network scale is large. We propose a novel signature allocation method based on a multi-hash policy, using a set of hash functions and a mapping-table to identify the signature. the proposed method decreases significantly both the signature identification complexity and the signature conflict probability. We implement the algorithm in GNU Radio and evaluate the performance in a testbed of three USRP nodes. the result shows that, under typical settings,

In recent years, a lot of interest has been drawn to the so-called multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems in their potential to achieve enormous capacity gains. this increase in capacity is dependent upon the propagation environment exhibiting sufficient scattering. the characterization of MIMO channels is therefore required in order to analyze the performance of such systems in real environments. this paper describes the realization of a measurement method adopts optimum m-sequence pairs for this application, capable of completing parallel measurements within the coherence time of the channel. Results based on measurements in LOS and NLOS locations are referenced and show the effectiveness of the proposed method. A further objective of these experiments is to get insight into the channel estimation.

Operational services in MANETs, such as resource location and distribution of connectivity information, deal with node mobility and resource constraints to support applications. the reliability and availability of these services can be assured by data management approaches, as replication techniques using quorum systems. However, these systems are vulnerable to selfish and malicious nodes, that intentionally do not collaborate with replication operations or spread malicious data while participating in data replication. QS 2 , a bio-inspired scheme to tolerate selfish and malicious nodes in replication operation of quorum systems can effectively detect misbehaving nodes in quorum systems, increasing data reliability. this paper evaluates the performance of QS 2 considering two realistic scenarios: the distribution of local market information in a downtown city and the distribution of traffic and schedule information in bus lines. Simulation results show that QS 2 improves the reliability of replicated data in MANETs and the amount of data compromised by misbehaving nodes inside the replication system is much lower than outdated data due to network topology.

Large scale potable water transmission system considered in this paper is the Toronto Water System (TWS), one of the largest existing potable water supply networks. the main objective of the ongoing Transmission Operations Optimizer (TOO) project consists of developing an advanced tool for providing pumping schedules for 153 TWS pumps, with all quantitative requirements with respect to system operation being met while the energy costs are minimized ("the aim of pump scheduling is to minimize the marginal cost of supplying water while keeping within physical and operational constraints, such as maintaining sufficient water within the system's reservoirs, to meet the required time-varying consumer demands." - [6]). It is assumed that TOO should produce detailed optimal schedules for all pumps. the following modules of TOO are being currently developed: demand forecasting module, energy rates forecasting module, pumping schedule optimizer and, finally, an assessment module consisting mainly of hydraulic, EPANET based, TWS simulator. this paper presents key component of the pumping schedule optimizer, namely, the Aggregated Pumping Station Operation Planning Problem (APSOP) and the approach to its solution.

We propose a context recognizing incremental adaptive network to classify user contexts. the preferred approach is to evaluate the previous insertion by the observation of the error. Because each insertion influences the local behavior, the observed error should also be a local measurement and not the average error on the task. Such an insertion-evaluation cycle allows a local optimization, but decreases the ability to allocate new nodes if the previous insertions were not successful. In a non-stationary environment with an unknown amount of data, it would cause a severe problem with gradually developing. So, in parallel to the error-driven insertion an additional distance-driven insertion is considered. the proposed method is applicable to providing context-aware services in ubiquitous environment.
