A mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. this is an efficient means of early detection of breast cancer. High resolution is a common characteristic of such images. Archiving and retaining these data for at least three years is expensive, difficult and requires sophisticated data compression techniques. In this paper an efficient method is proposed for lossless compression of mammography images. After performing de-correlation of the image using two efficient predictors, the residue image is divided into 4x4 blocks. the blocks with all-zero pixels are identified using one bit code. Later, Second order of pixel grouping is employed to the remaining blocks to increase the coding efficiency. Such blocks are coded using Base offset method. Special techniques are used to save the header information. the method is tested using 25 mammograms from the MIAS database, each having a resolution of 1024x1024 pixels with 8 bits/pixel. Experimental results indicate better compression ratio when compared to JPEG 2000, JPEG-LS, PNG and JBIG. © 2008 IEEE.

We study an efficient texture image segmentation model for multichannel images using a local feature fitting based active contours scheme. Using a chromaticity-brightness decomposition, we propose a flexible segmentation approach using multi-channel texture and intensity in a globally convex continuous optimization framework. We make use of local feature histogram based weights with the smoothed gradients from the brightness channel and localized fitting for the chromaticity channels. A fast numerical implementation is described using an efficient dual minimization formulation and experimental results on synthetic and real color images indicate the superior performance of the proposed method compared to related approaches. the novel contributions include the use of local feature density functions in the context of a luminance-chromaticity decomposition combined with a globally convex active contour variational method to capture texture variations for image segmentation. © 2012 ACM.

Imposing expressions on expression-neutral human face images is an interesting application of human-computer-interaction, animation, entertainment and other such fields. the objective of this paper is to impose one of the six prototypic emotional expressions i.e., Joy, Surprise, Disgust, Fear, Anger and Sorrow to a given expression-neutral face image. For this, we first establish individual models for each of the six prototypic expressions. this model is independent of the shape and texture i.e., identity of the subjects in the training video sequences. Given an intensity of a particular expression, we find the changes in the shape and texture due to a particular expression from the derived models. these changes are added to the automatically annotated test image on which the expression is to be imposed. the major contributions of the paper are: (1) Developing a method for finding facial structure specific changes of a subject for imposing a particular expression and (2) Establishing a nonlinear relationship between the expression intensity and the corresponding facial changes. the experimental results show that the proposed method is better compared to another related method. the proposal is also good at preserving the identity of the subject while imposing a given expression on the expression-neutral face image. © 2012 ACM.

this paper introduces an efficient technique to reconstruct the volume of human brain from low resolution MR image sequences acquired in sagittal, coronal and axial views. the algorithm uses image interpolation as the basis of volume reconstruction. It works in different stages. At first, the brightness and contrast of the MR images in different views are normalized based on the repetition time (TR) and echo time (TE) used during the MR imaging. Alignment of MR image sequences in different views is performed based on a standard 3D human brain anatomical model. Based on the alignment information, the spatial resolution of the MR images in all of the three views are normalized. Furthermore, a technique using normalized cross-correlation has been applied to refine the alignment process. Finally, the high resolution volume of the brain is reconstructed by interpolation based on inverse distance weighing. the proposed volume reconstruction scheme shows promising results producing good quality of the reconstructed volume images. © 2012 ACM.

Tweening, also known as shape morphing, is an important concept in keyframe animation wherein an initial shape is transformed smoothly into a final shape. the huge body of existing literature in the areas of shape transformations and tweening in 2D is mostly restricted to transformations between simple non-self-intersecting polygonal shapes. In this paper we introduce a robust tweening algorithm which is capable of creating smooth transformations between non-simple polygonal shapes that are immersions of a disk. All the intermediate shapes generated by our algorithm are guaranteed to be disk immersions. We achieve this by calculating high quality triangulations, from given arbitrary triangulations, of the initial and final non-simple polygons and establishing a homeomorphism between the disks of the two immersions. If the triangulations of the source and target shapes are incompatible, we change the geometry as well as the triangulation smoothly during the morphing process. © 2012 ACM.

A novel graph theoretic approach is proposed for recognizing each of the six basic prototypic human emotional facial expressions from a video sequence. the feature used, called a Shape-Motion-Descriptor (SMD), is based on orientation-quantized gradient-weighted optical flow in a hierarchical manner. the basis of the SMD is learned using a codebook learning technique. Inter-relations between SMDs are represented through a graph. A novel definition of de-centrality measure of graph connectivity is devised to make the initially large codebook, a compact one. Each video sequence is represented by an expression descriptor. the efficiency of the proposed expression descriptor is tested using different classifiers and the results are compared with the state-of-the-art methods in literature. Our result is at par or better than competing methods. © 2012 ACM.

A novel supervised technique for the generation of spatially consistent land cover maps based on class-matting is presented in this paper. this method takes advantage of both standard supervised classification technique and natural image matting. It adaptively exploits the spatial contextual information contained in the neighborhood of each pixel through the use of image matting to reduce the incongruence inherent in pixel-wise, radiometric classification of multi-spectral remote sensing data, providing a more spatially homogeneous land-cover map besides yielding a better accuracy. In order to make image matting possible for N-class land cover map generation, we extend the basic alpha matting problem into N independent matting problems, each conforming to one particular class. the user input required for the alpha matting algorithm in terms of initially identifying a few sample regions belonging to a particular class (known as the foreground object in matting) is obtained automatically using the supervised ML classifier. Experimental results obtained on multispectral data sets confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system. © 2012 ACM.

A wide category of objects and scenes can be effectively searched and classified using the modern descriptors and classifiers. With the performance on many popular categories becoming satisfactory, we explore into the issues associated with much harder recognition problems. We address the problem of searching specific images in indian stone-carvings and sculptures in an unsupervised setup. For this, we introduce a new dataset of 524 images containing sculptures and carvings of eight different indian deities and three other subjects popular in the indian scenario. We perform a thorough analysis to investigate various challenges associated with this task. A new image-representation is proposed using a sequence of discriminative patches mined in an unsupervised manner. For each image, these patches are identified based on their ability to distinguish the given image from the image most dissimilar to it. then a rejection-based re-ranking scheme is formulated based on both similarity as well as dissimilarity between two images. this new scheme is experimentally compared with two baselines using state-of-the-art descriptors on the proposed dataset. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that our proposed method of image-representation and rejection cascade improves the retrieval performance on this hard problem as compared to the baseline descriptors. © 2012 ACM.

this paper presents a new method to detect space time interest point (STIP) from video data. We use three dimensional facet model to detect STIP and call it as facet space-time interest point or FaSTIP. the proposed algorithm detects all the desired interest points efficiently in different scales compared to other existing methods. A video clip is described as a collection of 3D wavelet base features computed at these interest points. Finally, multi-channel SVM with χ2- kernel is used to classify human actions. Our contribution here are two fold: first, we present a new algorithm for interest point detection in video data, and second, we propose a new descriptor for general human activity classification. Experimental results show the accuracy of the detected interest points and the power of descriptor compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2012 ACM.

In this paper, a new Wavelet Transform based scheme is proposed for the binarization of document images with complex background and non-uniform illumination. the proposed scheme is simple and effective and does not require manual tuning of any parameters. the binarization of document images is accomplished by background estimation. this is done using low frequency approximation coefficients of the wavelet transform of the image at appropriate decomposition level. the estimated background is utilized for final binarization. the input image binarized with global Otsu and wavelet treated image binarized with adaptive Otsu are used to obtain final binarized image of the document. the performance of proposed scheme is tested and compared to some well-known methods of document image binarization. the results demonstrate the superior performance and relative effectiveness of the proposed scheme on various images having complex as well as non-uniform illuminated backgrounds. © 2012 ACM.
