Escalating commitment is a common and costly phenomenon in software projects in which decision-makers continue to invest resources to a failing course of action. We conducted a longitudinal case study exploring the effect of daily meetings on escalating commitment. this was done in an agile project building software for the oil and gas industry. By analyzing data collected over a period of four years, and drawing on concepts from self-justification theory we found that daily meetings contributed to maintain a situation of escalating commitment. this especially occurs if the meeting becomes a place for reporting and defending decisions with team members feeling that they have to justify their choices towards the project management or fellow team members. Early signs of escalation such as rationalizing continuation of a chosen course of action must therefore be taken seriously.

agile/Lean software development teams are by definition striving for high performance. However, it is not straightforward to recognize and cultivate those high-performing teams. Sometimes the team members perceive their internal performance differently than their externally observed outcomes really are. this paper addresses those issues by proposing an instrument for self-monitoring and analyzing software development team performance. the key goal is that practicing teams can use it even on a daily basis to indicate and steer their own performance excellence. this is supported by certain principal performance analysis guidelines. A prototype implementation of the instrument is demonstrated with some empirical cases. the cases indicate that the instrument can indicate noticeable differences in the perceived performance of individual team members and the team external outcomes. It helps detecting potential performance problems and impediments as well as improving even high-performers, and explaining team performance differences.

In today's dynamic market environments, producing high quality software rapidly and efficiently is crucial. In order to allow fast and reliable development processes, several agile methodologies have been designed and are now quite popular. Although existing agile methodologies are abundant, companies are increasingly interested in the construction of their own customized methods to fit their specific environment. In this paper, we investigate how agile methods can be constructed in-house to address specific software process needs. First, we examine a case study focusing on the tailoring of two agile methodologies, XP and Scrum. then, we focus on the high-level scope of any agile method customization and investigate an approach based on the Situational Method engineering (SME) paradigm that includes measurement concepts for constructing context specific agile methodologies. We also examine several existing metamodels proposed for use in SME. Finally, we introduce an agile metamodel designed to support the construction of agile methods and relying on measurements to provide guidance to agile methodologists during the construction phase and throughout the development process itself.

We present the application of software process modeling and simulation using an agent-based approach to a real case study of software maintenance. the original process used PSP/TSP;it spent a large amount of time estimating in advance maintenance requests, and needed to be greatly improved. To this purpose, a Kanban system was successfully implemented, that demonstrated to be able to substantially improve the process without giving up PSP/TSP. We customized the simulator and, using input data with the same characteristics of the real ones, we were able to obtain results very similar to that of the processes of the case study, in particular of the original process. We also simulated, using the same input data, the possible application of the Scrum process to the same data, showing results comparable to the Kanban process.

Programing paradigms define how to think and design while creating software. Object-Oriented and Functional paradigms are two of the most adopted for synthesizing it. Modern languages, attempting to provide higher abstractions, are increasingly supporting native multi-paradigm programming styles. the Object-functional approach still uses classes for information and high-level structure, but allows algorithms to be implemented functionally. New challenges now exist and there is a general lack of knowledge on best practices for adopting this paradigm. this research proposes the systematic usage of software patterns to capture these new recurring problems and their solutions, though not discarding the identification of new algorithms and designs. We will use Scala as a base language, and will attempt to validate our hypothesis through multiple methodologies, including quasi-experiments and case studies. We expect to provide a basis for improvement for programming languages (through pattern absorption) and for software engineering professionals.

the development of complex software systems following the Model-Driven engineering (MDE) approach relies on the use of different models for describing the system (e. g., structure, behavior). these models should be specified first separately but then their inter-relationship must be established since they represent complementary aspects of the system. Besides, MDE development processes are mostly focused on functionality, and do not give proper support to the quality aspects of the system. In this paper, we present a generic multimodel and the process for its construction, allowing the representation of the different viewpoint models of a software system and the relationships among elements on these viewpoints. this multimodel is a means for integrating a quality viewpoint in MDE processes, allowing the quality attributes to become a decision factor in the choice among design decisions in transformation processes. the feasibility of this approach is illustrated through the use of the multimodel in a specific example for software Product Line development.

Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Within this PhD thesis we will develop a framework of a consistent process for involving students as subjects of empirical studies of software engineering. In concrete, our experiences with software development teams composed of students will analyze how RUP (Rational Unified Process) processes can be compliant with the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), namely in the context of MLs (maturity levels) 2 and 3. Additionally, we will also analyze the influence of project management tools to improve the process maturity of the teams. Our final goal of carrying out empirical studies with students is to understand its validity when compared with the corresponding studies in real industrial settings.

this article describes the design, development, validation and results of a Process Assessment Model for assessing Technological and Business Competencies on software Development. the model follows the ISO/IEC 15504 (SPICE) requirements for Process Assessment Models. the development of this model follows the PRO2PI Method Framework for engineering Process Models as a methodology. In the first phases the concept to be assessed was defined in terms of technological and business competencies on software development. In order to identify these competencies the processes used to develop the software systems are identified and analyzed. Model's versions have been used in thirteen software intensive organizations.

this paper presents the partial results of an extended replicated pair programming experiment, conducted at the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of thessaloniki, Greece during the two semesters of the year 2009-10. the entire study involved 160 second semester students attending a software engineering advanced programming course with pair programming and test-driven development as teaching methodology. A series of formal experiments were conducted to investigate, as in the first experiment, the impact of developer personalities and temperaments on pair performance. In this paper we report partial results and we focus on pair performance in terms of communication, time to complete assignments and overall score. the main variables were statistically analyzed in order to test differences between two personality groups: A control group with homogeneous personalities in pairs and an experimental one with heterogeneous personalities. the findings reported here concern only the first winter semester and confirm that pairs consisting of heterogeneous personalities and temperaments performed better than pairs with the same personality and temperament type. However, time to complete assignments was not statistically different between the two groups.
