Remote work is commonplace nowadays, with software startups actively embracing it. However, remote work poses various challenges, among which team challenges are prominent and highly relevant to early-stage software startups, since effective team collaboration is one key factor for them to operate and succeed in uncertain environments. Challenges faced by early-stage software startup teams are less explored, especially in remote work settings. this research will propose a design framework to address the challenges faced by early-stage software startup teams in remote work settings. this research uses multi-case study to facilitate a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. Expected significance of findings lies in the identification of unique challenges and key practices to tackle those challenges, offering actionable insights and innovative solutions.

Hybrid meetings, which combine in-person and virtual participants, are becoming increasingly common in modern agile workplaces. Despite their prevalence, these meetings often lead to asymmetric participation. In this study, we explored the nature of participation asymmetries in hybrid meetings and identified the technical and social factors contributing to these disparities. We analyzed anonymized access card data, observed hybrid meetings, and conducted interviews with employees in a large-scale Norwegian software development organization. Our findings reveal that the employees preferred to go to the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In hybrid meetings, we found reduced engagement from virtual participants compared to those co-located at the office, especially in the absence of a clear speaking order. Social-driven asymmetries included difficulties in entering conversations, missing remarks and nonverbal cues, and being left out of pre- and post-meeting discussions. Physical presence in meetings was found to be crucial for newly onboarded team members. Future research should investigate what fosters inclusive meeting practices to improve engagement and collaboration in hybrid work environments.

Background and Related Work: software startups face unique challenges in product development, including limited resources, the need for rapid innovation, and the constant pressure to adapt to market changes. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has recently gained significant attention, offering capabilities to assist creative processes, generate content, and enhance decision-making through data analysis. However, how GenAI can be integrated into agile product development processes in software startups remains an open question. Objective: this study aims to identify potential use cases for GenAI in software startups and explore how GenAI can support innovation, overcome development challenges, and integrate with agile practices to improve product quality and development speed. Method: We identified a list of GenAI use cases from existing systematic literature reviews and mapped them to engineering process areas in software startups. Following that, we conducted workshops with experts to validate our results. Results: the results provide a descriptive overview of GenAI's potential applications in software startup environments. Given the current state of the art, we identified areas that could benefit faster from integrating GenAI. Conclusions: the study delineates the prospective impact of GenAI on agile product development in software startups, showcasing areas of immediate applicability.

In many agile software development projects, documentation is often missing, outdated, or written with only a technical perspective. Existing literature recognizes the importance of documentation quality, especially when it comes to its readability for diverse audiences. While recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) offer the potential to tackle these issues, the use of LLMs for software documentation remains unexplored. this paper investigates the use of ChatGPT to improve and adapt documentation to specific audiences. We apply ChatGPT-4 for alternative documentation production and measure the resulting text characteristics and readability. Twenty-five experts from management and development rate these different versions. Results show the suitability of ChatGPT for generating high-quality text for both audiences, with managers benefiting more from an adapted version.

My research explores the adoption of InnerSource, a practice that integrates open source methodologies within organizations to foster collaboration and overcome the traditional silo mentality. InnerSource and agile implementations share many values such as transparency, employee empowerment, and a flexible response to change. InnerSource adoption can come before, after, or in parallel with agile transformations. Despite the increasing recognition of InnerSource as a pivotal driver for developer productivity and its growing presence in industry discussions, academic research on the subject remains in its infancy. Leveraging my involvement with the InnerSource Commons community and drawing from Activity theory, my research aims to fill critical gaps in our understanding of InnerSource adoption. Specifically, it investigates the activities organizations engage in to enable InnerSource, identifies blockers hindering its implementation, and proposes effective strategies to counteract these challenges. At the XP 2024 PhD Symposium, I intend to share some preliminary findings of my research, derived from a Systematic Literature Review and a pilot study with an InnerSource practitioner working group. My research not only seeks to advance theoretical knowledge in the field but also offers practical insights for organizations striving to change software development practices, contributing to a more collaborative and efficient software development environment.

Code review occupies a significant amount of developers' work time and is an established practice in modern software development. Despite misaligments between users' goals and the code review tools and processes pointed out by recent research, the code review tooling has largely stayed the same since the early 90s. Improving these tools, even slightly, has the potential for a large impact spread out over time and the large developer community. In this paper, we use the Double Diamond design process to work together with a team of industry practitioners to find, refine, prototype, and evaluate ways to make it easier to compare refactored code blocks and find previously hard-to-see changes in them. the results show that a flexible comparison modal integrated into Gerrit could reduce the mental load of code review on refactored code. Potentially, it could also have effects on how code is written by no longer discouraging refactoring due to it complicating the review. the user interface created in this collaborative manner was also intuitive enough for all of the participants to be able to use it without any hints or instructions.

agile software development (ASD) teams show their relevance through the continuous delivery of valuable software. As part of ASD, product owners have an important role in four activities: determining most valuable backlog items, refining them, and in validating and measuring business value. In this research we investigate how product owners operationalize business value delivery in these activities. We conducted 38 semi-structured in-depth interviews with product owners in the Netherlands. Overall we found that 55% operationalize value using only two of the four activities, and that 11% apply all four activities. We furthermore found that only 26.5% of these product owners use a structured prioritization method, 47% prioritize based on individual preferences and gut feeling, and 26.5% do not use any prioritization approach at all. We found five different approaches to refinement. the majority (84%) of the product owners state that they validate business value delivery, while just 24% actually measure business value. Overall we conclude that there are opportunities to bring product ownership to a higher level on operationalizing business value delivery, and that there is a clear need in practice for better structure and guidance in operationalizing business value delivery to do so.

Little research has been done on enabling software development teams to self-report waste to assist in productivity improvement. this study created a waste categorization and survey for teams to identify and quantify wasteful activities. Developers from a Swiss company used the survey for three weeks. Participants found the survey helpful for identifying waste but there was little evidence that self-reported waste correlated with improved performance.

Analytics is becoming known for providing exceptional opportunities to companies. However, companies are not utilizing its full potential despite the widespread benefits. In particular, analytics practices are imperceptible when we talk about small yet innovative companies like software startups. Nevertheless, startups' uncertain nature and focus on innovation make them promising candidates to increase the odds of success using analytics. In this paper, we investigate the key practices applied by software startups while conducting analytics. We address our research question through a multiple case study performed with three startup companies at distinct startup stages. thematic data analysis led us to observe nine analytics practices applied by these startups. the identified analytics practices span a spectrum of activities characterized by the analytics framework. Our findings provide insights for software startup companies to introduce or enhance analytics in their specialized context.

Datafication processes, the ongoing strive for making organizations data-driven, have in recent years entailed data-focused software projects and more interdisciplinary teamwork. Simultaneously as agile product teams have been directed towards increased use of data for software development, stronger data protection regulations such as GDPR have further complexified the software developer role, whose responsibilities and expectations now expand far beyond mere coding. Seeking to develop an understanding of how data-intensive product teams in the public sector maneuver the legal hurdles emerging in the wake of data governance, this paper builds on 19 interviews with members of two agile product teams in the Norwegian organizations NAV and Entur. Our findings indicate that including a legal expert in the team can boost confidence in data handling practices and avoid delays in deliveries, but it requires effort to synchronize and overcome interdisciplinary barriers.
