An intra-prediction mode with 4×4 block and 16×16 block sizes for luma component and 8×8 block size for chroma component is used in H.264 to improve the rate-distortion performance. However, the computational complexity of H.264 encoder is drastically increased due to the various intraprediction modes. Recently efficient hardware architectures were proposed for the fast execution of H.264/AVC intraprediction mode selection. this paper proposes an efficient pipelining method for the 4×4 blocks intra-prediction mode selection. In particular, we exploit the GPU's streaming architecture at 4 × 4 intra-prediction mode selection in H.264/AVC and we develop a special strategy including instruction optimization and taking full advantage of shared memory to further exploit the fine-grained parallelism of GPUs. Experimental results up to about 3×speedup of our GPU-based algorithms over the implementations on sequential CPUs. © 2011 IEEE.

the calculation of pairwise correlation coefficient on a dataset, known as the correlation matrix, is often used in data analysis, signal processing, pattern recognition, image processing, and bioinformatics. With the state-of-the-art Graphic processing Units (GPUs) that consist of massive cores capable to do processing up to several Gflops, the calculation of correlation matrix can be accelerated several times over traditional CPUs. However, due to the rapid growth of the data in the digital era, the correlation matrix calculation becomes computing intensive which needs to be executed on multiple GPUs. As of now, GPUs are common components in data center at many institutions. their GPU deployment tends towards a GPU cluster which each node is equipped with GPUs. In this paper, we propose a parallel computing based on the hybrid MPI/CUDA programming for fast and efficient Pearson correlation matrix calculation on GPU clusters. At coarse grain parallelism, the correlation matrix is partitioned into tiles which are distributed to execute concurrently on many GPUs using MPI. At fine grain level, the CUDA kernel function on each node performs massively parallel computing on a GPU. To balance load across all GPUs, we adopt the work pool model which there is a master node that manages tasks in the work pool and dynamically assign tasks to worker nodes. the result of the evaluation shows that the proposed work can ensure the load balance across different GPUs and thus gives better execution time than using a simple static data partitioning. © 2011 IEEE.

the Cellular Neural Network (CNN) is very efficient for image processing tasks. However, there are limitations in its processing capabilities because some tasks can not be learned by a single CNN network. In recent years it has been accepted that a set of CNNs connected in parallel can realize more complex image processing tasks than a single CNN. Also recently it has been reported an architecture of neurofuzzy adaptable network (SIMAP) able to construct its structure and membership functions using only input-output data. In this paper is described the way of associating a CNN for every fuzzy rule in the SIMAP network for making complex image processing tasks, which are impossible to do for a unique CNN.

this paper presents a fine-grained parallel processing technique applied to the transient and steady state analysis of electric power systems containing linear, nonlinear and time varying elements. this approach is based on the application of the parallel processing platform named OpenMP. this work presents five test cases that show the advantage of using the proposed technique compared with traditional sequential techniques.

Today's production processes are characterized by global supply chains, short lifecycles, and an increasing personalization of goods. To satisfy the demands for agility we must integrate the production with the logistics processes and knowledge about the underlying transportation services and infrastructure. this requires continuous monitoring and reacting to events. Service-oriented architectures have provided a platform for structuring services within and across enterprises. However, for an effective monitoring and timely reaction to emerging situations it is crucial to integrate event processing and service orientation. In this position paper we show how event processing and service orientation can be combined into an effective delivery platform for an integrated coordination of the flow of goods. We show how simple events, e.g. RFID tag detections or simple sensor readings, can be integrated into abstract events that are meaningful to invoke logistics services and improve the celerity of responses. We propose filtering, aggregating, and on-the-fly analysis of the continuous flow of events and make events persistent in an event warehouse for auditability and input to future planning processes.

With billions of triples in the Linked Open Data cloud, which continues to grow exponentially, very challenging tasks begin to emerge related to the exploitation of large-scale reasoning. A considerable amount of work has been done in the area of using Information Retrieval methods to address these problems. However, although applied models work on Web scale, they downgrade the semantics contained in an RDF graph by observing each physical resource as a 'bag of words (URIs/literals)'. Distributional statistic methods can address this problem by capturing the structure of the graph more efficiently. However, these methods are continually confronting with efficiency and scalability problems on serial computing architectures due to their computational complexity. In this paper, we describe a parallelization algorithm of one such method (Random Indexing) based on the Message-Passing Interface (MPI), that enables efficient utilization of high performance parallel computers. Our evaluation results show significant performance improvement.

Automation, computational time and cost are open subjects in microarray image processing. the present paper proposes image processing techniques together with their implementations in order to eliminate the shortcomings of the existing software platforms for microarray image processing: user intervention, increased computational time and cost. thus, for each step of microarray image processing, application-specific hardware architectures are designed aiming algorithms parallelization for fast processing. Computational time is estimated and compared with state of the art approaches. the proposed hardware architectures integrated inside microarray scanners deliver microarray image characteristics in an automated manner, excluding the need of an additional software platform. the FPGA technology was chosen for implementation, due to its parallel computation capabilities and ease of reconfiguration.

Within the fusion community, a large number of codes are in use to simulate various aspects of the plasma behaviour. Many codes have been written by physicists with a big emphasis on the physics without using the latest technologies available in computer science. For improving this situation, a project with acronym EUFORIA was created. the main target of this project is to increase the performance of key existing codes, either parallelizing the sequential codes or improving their parallelization. However, in general these codes were not thought for new supercomputers based on muticore architectures and only take advantage of the task level parallelism, basically using Message Passing Interface (MPI). In this paper we discuss several possible ways to apply hybrid parallelization techniques in fusion codes for exploiting new multiprocessor supercomputers under development.

Computing unto 100GOPS without cooling is essential for high-end embedded systems and much required by markets. A novel master-slave multi-SIMD architecture and its kernel (template) based parallel programming flow is thus introduced as a parallel signal processing platform, ePUMA, embedded parallel DSP processor with Unique Memory Access. It is an on chip multi-DSP-processor (CMP) targeting to predictable signal processing for communications and multimedia. the essential technologies are to separate the processing of control stream from parallel computing, and to separate parallel data access from parallel arithmetic computing kernels. By separations, the computation and data access can be orthogonal both in hardware and in programs. Orthogonal operations can therefore be executed in parallel and the run time cost of data access can be minimized. Benchmark shows that the computing performance therefore reaches about 80% of the hardware limit. Less than 40% of the hardware limit can be reached by normal processors. the unique SIMD memory subsystem architecture offers programmable conflict free parallel data accesses. Programming flow and tools are also developed to support coding on the unique hardware architecture. A prototype on FPGA shows especially high performance over silicon cost.

In this paper, a new electronic hardware and algorithms enabling discrimination between neutron and gamma in plastic scintillators together with the first associated experimental results, are presented. this electronic platform is mainly based onto a quad 200 MHz ADCs. Using phase rotating, it is possible to sample the signal up to 800 MHz equivalent, with 8 bits precision. this sampling frequency allows a real time signal processing. Despite all previous work, we have shown during this study that it is possible to discriminate neutron from gamma in plastic scintillators even for low energy neutrons (less than 10 MeV). Two patents have been accepted and registered;the first deals with the intrinsic signal processing and the second with thermal stabilization methods of photomultiplier tubes. the system could be used up to 100 000 events per second (both gamma and neutron). this system is currently dedicated to homeland security devices;this is due to its response time (in the order of 1 up to 3 seconds). the next step is to implement the thermal stabilization algorithm in the FPGA and microcontroller to obtain a global system free from any trouble caused by the environment thermal variations. this aspect of the research is crucial for measurements in the field. the time response should also be improved to make it a reliable alternative to Helium-3 shortage for neutron detection at borders checkpoint. © 2011 IEEE.
