In this paper, we proposed a flexible VLSI-based parallelprocessing architecture for an improved three-step search (ITSS) motion estimation algorithm that is superior to the existing three-step search (TSS) algorithm in all cases and also to the recently proposed new three-step search (NTSS) algorithm if used for low bit-rate video coding, as withthe H.261 standard. Based on a VLSI tree processor and an FPGA addressing circuit, the architecture can successfully implement the ITSS algorithm on silicon withthe minimum number of gates. Because of the flexibility of the architecture, it can also be extended to implement other three-step search algorithms.

Although Portugal is a relatively small country (10 million people) it has had an active materials program going back 200 years: an exhibit of early Portuguese materials work was held in conjunction withthe conference. the organizers of the conference - Prof. Teresa Vieira, Chairperson, and Profs. Bruno Trindade and Albano Cavaleiro, Co-Chairpersons (shown in Figure 1) - noted that until this conferencethe meetings of the Portuguese Materials Society have provided a forum mainly for the Portuguese to present their work in the Portuguese language. In this study, a unicast routing algorithm based on the parallel branching method has been developed for a faulty hypercube parallelprocessing system. the developed method has been compared withthe cube algebra method developed by us and with studies in the literature related to this subject. Withthe developed routing algorithm, the routing from the source node to the destination node is fulfilled in the available minimal step without any restriction on the number of faulty nodes. In the algorithm, the system with circuit switching has been considered, and the obtained results have been visually simulated by using the developed hypercube routing simulation program. the performance of the simulator has been evaluated by using a comparison of the number of fulfilled processes versus the number of faulty nodes for the two methods developed by us.

Architectural synthesis is an efficient design process that reduces the gap between algorithms and architectures by raising the abstraction level. However, this process currently does not take the VLSI circuit interconnection cost into account whereas this cost becomes predominant using submicron technologies. In this paper, an interconnection cost analysis at the behavioural level is performed in order to provide rapid prototyping results and to direct the synthesis process with additional path constraints. Results are presented showing the interest of this approach.

Efficient use of data-reuse transformations combined with a custom memory hierarchy that exploits the temporal locality of data related memory accesses can have a significant impact on system power consumption, especially in data dominated applications e.g. multimedia processing. In this paper the effect of data-reuse decisions on power consumption, area and performance of multimedia applications implemented on uni- and dual-processor embedded cores is explored. By this work it is clarified that conclusions for the transformations effect on multi-processor architectures can be extracted by the corresponding effect on the uniprocessor architecture. In this way the exploration space can be significantly reduced. A motion estimation algorithm, namely the two-dimensional logarithmic search, and a discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithm are used as demonstrator applications.
