Modern distributed multimedia applications are resource-hungry, and they often leverage on-demand cloud services to reduce their expenses. Existing cloud services deploy many servers in a few data centers, which consume a lot of electricity to power up and cold down, and thus are expensive and environmentally unfriendly. In this paper, we present a multimedia fog computing platform that utilizes resources from public crowds, edge networks, and data centers to serve distributed multimedia applications at lower costs. We use animation rendering as a case study, and identify several challenges for optimizing it on our multimedia fog computing platform. Among these challenges, we focus on the problem of predicting the completion time of each rendering job. We propose an efficient algorithm based on stateof-the-art machine learning algorithms. We also fine-tune the algorithm using multi-fold cross-validation for higher prediction accuracy. With real datasets, we conduct trace-driven simulations to quantify the performance of our prediction algorithm and that of the whole platform. the simulation results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms a state-of-the-art statistical model in several aspects: completed job ratio by 20%, makespan by 2 times, and normalized deviation by 30 times, on average. Moreover, the overall performance of the platform with our proposed algorithm is fairly close to that with an Oracle of the actual job completion time: a small factor of 1.48 in terms of makespan is observed.

Motivated by an attempt to understand the formation and development of (human) language, we introduce a "distributed compression" problem. In our problem a sequence of pairs of players from a set of K players are chosen and tasked to communicate messages drawn from an unknown distribution Q. Arguably languages are created and evolve to compress frequently occurring messages, and we focus on this aspect. the only knowledge that players have about the distribution Q is from previously drawn samples, but these samples differ from player to player. the only common knowledge between the players is restricted to a common prior distribution P and some constant number of bits of information (such as a learning algorithm). Letting Tϵ denote the number of iterations it would take for a typical player to obtain an ϵ-Approximation to Q in total variation distance, we ask whether Tϵ iterations suffice to compress the messages down roughly to their entropy and give a partial positive answer. We show that a natural uniform algorithm can compress the communication down to an average cost per message of O(H(Q) + log(D(P||Q)) in ∼O (Tϵ) iterations while allowing for O(ϵ)-error, where D(||) denotes the KL-divergence between distributions. For large divergences this compares favorably with the static algorithm that ignores all samples and compresses down to H(Q) +D(P||Q) bits, while not requiring Tϵ K iterations that it would take players to develop optimal but separate compressions for each pair of players. Along the way we introduce a "datastructural" view of the task of communicating with a natural language and show that our natural algorithm can also be implemented by an efficient data structure, whose storage is comparable to the storage requirements of Q and whose query complexity is comparable to the lengths of the message to be compressed. Saving power becomes one of the main objectives in information technology industry and research. Companies consume a lot of money in the shape of power consuming. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a new shape of delivering operating systems remotely. Operating systems are executing in a cloud data center. Users desktops and applications can be accessed by using thin client devices. thin client device is consisting of screen attached with small CPU. VDI has benefits in terms of cost reduction and energy saving. In this paper, we increase the power saved by Grinfy system. Without VDI, Grinfy can save at least 30% of energy consumption to its users companies. By integrating VDI in computing systems and using Grinfy, the power efficiency and saving can be improved and save more than 30%. the improving and increasing of energy saving features of VDI are also illustrated by experiment and will be integrated to Grinfy system to increase percentage of energy saved.

Software Defined networking (SDN) is an alternative networking paradigm that provides flexible network management through the separation between data plane and control plane functionalities. this separation results in extensive communication between control and data plane, which can result in a severe bottleneck for the whole network, under high traffic conditions. Moreover, researchers shown that an adversary can exploit this bottleneck to mount a powerful Denial of Service attack on the control plane, known as Control Plane Saturation Attack (CPSA). In this paper, we provide a thorough analysis of the CPSA, and in particular we show how it can be amplified by long forwarding paths in an SDN network. We prove the effectiveness of the attack through extensive testing using OpenFlow, the most widely adopted control-data plane communication protocol for SDN. Our evaluation shows that, when the forwarding path length in increased by 5 times, the attacker can leverage a 55% decrease in the attack rate required to incapacitate the network.

today's cloud computing Data Centers (DCs) contain tens of thousands of servers with highly significant and remarkable bandwidth requirements as the demands of cloud computing applications, social applications, multimedia contents, and data intensive analysis are dramatically rising. Even thus, current DC technologies have following problems. First, power consumption of a Data Center Network (DCN) are constant irrespective of the use of network resources. Second, violation of the users' SLA according to a static routing technique, a few links in the DCNs are experiencing congestion while other majority links are being underutilized. third, VM placement and VM problems are essential in datacenter because current server hardware capacities are more than the requirements of the demands from users. To overcome these limitations of the current DCNs, we proposed a distributed Software Defined networking (SDN) -based mechanism, which consists of energy efficient VM placement and QoS Aware routing with elephant flow detection scheme. our mechanism reduces power consumption of the DCN by turning off/on links, switches and servers. To satisfy user experienced in terms of users' QoS and decreased network congestion, QRVE distributes traffics using traffic aware multipath routing scheme which recognizes elephant flows at the edge layer (Access Layer) across DCN.

As named data networking (NDN) continues to evolve into a mature and production network, a robust and efficient congestion control mechanism has become a fundamental requirement for the success and wide deployment of NDN. In this paper, upon exploring the unique hop-by-hop Interest forwarding feature, based on the CUBIC, we develop a novel congestion control mechanism for NDN. Our congestion control mechanism, namely EC-CUBIC, borrows the core idea of CUBIC to control the sending rate of interest packets on consumers. Specially, in routers, we queue the data packets in every face and according to the queue length to send a congestion signal to consumers, upon which consumers take action timely for the congestion. In addition, we implement this mechanism in ndnSIM, an NS3-based simulator, and conduct a number of experiments with various settings to evaluate the link utilization and packets-drop rate of the proposed algorithm. Comparing with the naive congestion control algorithm in NDN, our experimental results demonstrate that EC-CUBIC perform bette in terms of high link utilization and low packets-drop rate.

With the explosion of vehicles, the concept of Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has drawn increasing concern among academics. the IoV refers to extracting and processing information from massive data which are gathering from vehicles and their surrounds. And an integrated IoV system which is reliable on data storage and efficient on data processing is indispensable. In this paper, we design a distributed storage and processing system depending on Hadoop, HBase and Spark to store and process IoV data. the system can overcome the single point of failure problem, guarantee the reliable data storage and meet the real-time computing requirements. We do thorough tests to evaluate the system performance based on practical IoV data of Fuzhou city. the results indicate that the system can satisfy the requirements of stable data storage and efficient data processing.

Robotic swarms are multi-robot systems with no central coordination. the swarm as a whole is capable of displaying complex behaviors even if the robots are very simple and limited in sensing capabilities. the interaction between robots is only local and may also take place indirectly through the environment. the main contribution of this paper is that it demonstrates that membrane computing (XP colonies in this case) is a valid instrument for modeling and control of robots in a swarm. More, as membrane systems are parallel and distributed models, this makes the use of XP colonies to control robots in a swarm a valuable approach to the control of swarms of hundreds and thousands of robots where the parallelization of the control is a must. A case study on the synchronized dispersion of robots in a swarm is presented together with demonstration videos.

RDF datasets have increased rapidly over the last few years. In order to process SPARQL queries on these large datasets, much effort has been spent on developing horizontally scalable techniques, which involve data partitioning and parallel query processing. While distribution may provide storage scalability, it may also incur high communication costs for processing queries. In this paper, we present a parallel and distributed query processing approach that explores the existence of data allocation patterns, provided by a controlled data distribution, that determine how RDF triples should be grouped and stored on the same server. Fragments of the RDF datastore follow a given allocation pattern and correspond also to units of communication among servers. Based on this distribution model, we define two communication strategies for query processing: get-frag, which requests remote servers to send fragments that contain data required by a query, and send-result, which forwards intermediate results. these strategies are combined on a method, called 2ways, that chooses the adequate communication strategy whenever queries traverse fragment boundaries. We provide a cost function used to determine this choice and present experimental results. they show that our proposed technique effectively reduces the communication cost and improves the response time for processing SPARQL queries on a distributed RDF datastore.

Individuals' retweeting action is the driving force of information dissemination on social networking sites, without which tweets cannot arrive at audiences other than the source node's followers. Existing research tends to predict individuals' retweeting decisions with more and more factors/features, without examining the relevance of them and even why these factors are added is rarely discussed. As the number of factors grows up, the existence of irrelevant/redundant factors causes significant problems. Undoubtedly, finding dominating factors can deepen our understanding about individuals' retweeting decisions and save the cost of measuring redundant factors and computing resources. In this paper, we focus on exploring the relative importance of these factors with multiple statistical and data mining algorithms, and finally identify dominating factors which substantially affect individuals' retweeting decisions. Experiments demonstrate the superior performance of adopting only dominating factors in contrast with adopting full features set.
