this article presents a guiding framework on how to use social media as a marketing tool for academic researchers. We present fundamentals of a modern communication strategy, which is tailored to the needs of scholars and highlights the importance of personal brands, especially in academia. We offer concrete recommendations regarding target audiences and discuss various social media channels, including researcher-specific platforms such as SSRN, Mendeley, or ResearchGate. We then present an organizational approach to managing social media activities on a daily basis. In particular, we outline a workflow that can be used to efficiently manage social media activities. Because various social media sites differ fundamentally not only in their architecture but also in regard to their optimal use, we finally point out operational recommendations to increase effectivity throughout a researcher's portfolio of social media channels.

We propose a novel block address allocation method, called the nested buddy system, which can make use of wasted areas in the classical buddy system due to internal fragmentation. While achieving high utilization of address space, our new scheme supports efficient address matching for routers in packet forwarding and for network middleboxes in packet filtering. Specifically, the scheme uses just one prefix rule for each allocated address block in a packet routing/filtering table. We show by analysis and simulation that the increased address utilization can lead to significant reduction in the probability of a denial-of-service under bursty address allocation requests. In contrast, the classical buddy system requires the aggregation of many requests over time to smooth out demand, resulting in service delays undesirable to end users. Our solution is applicable to ISPs in serving mobile users carrying many network connected IoT devices and IasS providers in the cloud in serving tenants with dynamically varying demands for network addresses.

the growing dependency of users on social media, telecommunication services, mobile applications, banking amenities, and other cloud services requires a plan that mitigates inevitable failures and ensures the always-on access to these services. this emanates high availability (HA) concerns regarding the adoption of cloud. To maintain HA, the cloud provider and/or user should design a system that is immune to both application and infrastructure failures. this paper proposes live migration approach to maintain service delivery upon a sudden failure, a virtual machine (VM)/infrastructure overload, or maintenance. It develops a mixed integer linear programming model that minimizes the migration downtime based on the VM memory pages and the optimal HA-aware placement of the VM. It also provides different design considerations to achieve HA-aware applications placement. the proposed placement is used in the migration approach to find new hosts for the VMs. It considers VMs/applications deployments in geographically distributed data centers and satisfies redundancy, applications interdependency, and other HA and performance requirements. then the deployments are assessed using a formal Petri Net model to improve them in terms of HA. the HA-aware placement and migration approaches are evaluated on 3-tier web applications.

the use of video data for a variety of applications has gained immense popularity. these applications include traffic monitoring, surveillance, retail store management, etc. thousands of publicly accessible network cameras distributed around the world are potential sources of video data. the applications analyzing data from network cameras have different resource requirements (CPU, memory, etc.) and performance requirements (video frame rate). A preferred way to meet these requirements is to use a cloud infrastructure and a pay-peruse model of the cloud. Cloud computing offers resources, referred to as cloud instances, with different capacities and at different locations. the cost of these instances are dependent on their capacities and locations. the frame rate of the video data obtained from a network camera impacts the accuracy of the analysis and is dependent on the location of the cloud instance. Hence it is important to select the locations of the instances to meet the application performance requirements. this paper presents a resource management approach to select the locations, types, and number of cloud instances to analyze real-time video data from the network cameras while meeting the performance requirements and reducing the analysis cost. We model the resource management problem as a variable size bin packing problem and describe a heuristic algorithm to find a solution. this paper uses Amazon EC2 to evaluate our new resource manager, and observes that our method can reduce the analysis cost up to 56% compared with two other strategies for selecting instance locations.

Recently, researchers' and scientists' interest and concern to Internet of things (IoT) have been remarkably increasing. A diversity of IoT devices such as mobile phones, sensors and even scientific measurement facilities have been connected to the Internet and then generating an enormous amount of data. From the demands on computational resources enough to analyze such data, the utilization of the cloud has been a major trend in these days. Taking aggregation and distribution of data from and to IoT devices on the cloud into consideration, however, access control to such data gives rise to an important problem. Each of IoT devices may have a security policy and each user may have a different attribute. For achieving safe access control to data, a fully-controlled infrastructure where access to network resources is controlled as well as computational resources is required. From such a consideration, this paper proposes an access-controlled networking mechanism that dynamically organizes a flexible and secure network linking IoT devices, computational resources and users on the cloud, based on user's attribute and IoT device security policies. the architecture of FlowSieve, which we have designed and implemented in this preliminary stage of the research, is presented as well as our envisaged fully access-controlled cloud for secure data access.

In order to improve the cloud computing utilization, an Improved Ant Colony Optimization (IACO) is proposed. the proposed IACO algorithm improves pheromone factors and inspired factors innovatively based on the existent algorithms. Emulation tests are conducted in the CloudSim and the results indicate that IACO is superior to the conventional ACO and the latest IABC in task executing efficiency.

In the last few years, there has been a remarkable growth in the number of data centers, which represent one of the leading sources of increased business data traffic on the Internet. An effect of the growing scale and the wide use of data centers is the dramatic increase of power consumption, with significant consequences both in terms of environmental and operational costs. Hence, energy awareness has become one of the major design constraints for Cloud infrastructures. In order to face these challenges, a new generation of energy-efficient and ecosustainable network infrastructures is needed. In this work, a novel energy-aware resource orchestration framework for distributed Cloud infrastructures is introduced, in order to manage both network and IT resources in a typical optical backbone. A high-level overview of the system architecture is provided by focusing on the definition of the different layers of the whole infrastructure, and introducing the Path Computation Element, which is the key component of the proposed architecture. the aim is to explain how both network and IT resources can be managed while, at the same time, the overall power consumption is being minimized and QoS requirements are satisfied. Finally, a green migration plan that is obtained by applying Virtual Machine relocation algorithms is discussed, in order to dynamically react to the fluctuating resource requirements of the VMs.

the suffix array is an important indexing data structure for biological sequence analysis. the increasing size of genomic data necessitates the use of a computer cluster to speed up the computation. In this paper, we compare the performance of two distributed suffix array construction algorithms that can run on a computer cluster: the first is Futamura-Aluru-Kurtz algorithm and the second is Kulla-Sanders's. the performance of these two algorithms has not been compared earlier due to the lack of any available software and the difficulty of implementing them. In this paper, we answer a still open question about which algorithm would be better in practice, particularly for genomic data. We have implemented the two algorithms and made them available. the comparison results show that the Futamura-Aluru-Kurtz algorithm is more efficient in practice, despite the fact that the algorithm of Kulla-Sanders has better theoretical time complexity.
