Disaster area map generation and sharing are critical to disaster response operations. In post-disaster contexts however, cloud-based mapping services and data may be unavailable because of network challenges. Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) architectures have been proposed for data sharing in challenged networks. However, map generation may be too complex for individual DTN nodes given their limited computing resources. To generate and share maps of disaster areas, we present DTN MapEx, a distributed computing system for mapping that operates over a DTN. DTN MapEx distributes disaster map data and map generation tasks to multiple nodes to minimize individual computational loads. In the system, responders and volunteers act as mobile sensing nodes. they log the GPS traces of their traversed paths and collect disaster area map data such as the coordinates, images, and assessments of points-of-interest. the mobile nodes then route their collected data and a task request through the DTN to pre-deployed, fixed computing Nodes. the computing Nodes aggregate the data to generate a map and opportunistically route it back to the network. To reduce complexity, mapping tasks and data are divided amongst computing Nodes based on their current computational load. computing Nodes periodically update the DTN about their current loads. Mobile nodes use these updates in deciding where to allocate their task requests and data. In this paper, we present the design of DTN MapEx and perform initial evaluations on its feasibility in disaster scenarios.

Outsourcing to the Cloud is becoming an attractive option for many organisations dealing with large amounts of data. However, there is still a reluctance amongst companies dealing with highly regulated data because traditional Cloud storage does not support the level of privacy required to prevent access pattern leakage. Oblivious Random Access Machines (ORAM) have been a hot topic of research over the past number of years, proposing various cryptographic techniques to obtain the privacy levels required. We propose a new model, Dog ORAM - a distributed and shared oblivious RAM model with server side computation, that merges several models existing in the literature and includes a new method of access right management for multi-party data access. To achieve this, we use an additive homomorphic encryption scheme and a chameleon signature.

Improvements in memory, storage devices, and network technologies are constantly exploited by distributed systems in order to meet the increasing data storage and I/O demands of modern large-scale data analytics. Some systems use memory and SSDs as a cache for local storage while others combine local with network-attached storage to increase performance. However, no work has ever looked at all layers together in a distributed setting. We present a novel design for a distributed file system that is aware of storage media (e.g., memory, SSDs, HDDs, NAS) with different capacities and performance characteristics. the storage media are explicitly exposed to users, allowing them to choose the distribution and placement of replicas in the cluster based on their own performance and fault tolerance requirements. Meanwhile, the system offers a variety of pluggable policies for automating data management with the dual goal of increased performance and better cluster utilization. these two features combined inspire new research opportunities for data-intensive processing systems.

Recently, with the maturity of cloud services and the development of distributed computing, increasing images and video data are stored in the cloud. However, cloud services are generally provided by the third party entities. In addition, the images and video which are stored in the cloud mostly depend on the security of the cloud servers, while the data are not encrypted, which is a great threat to the users' privacy. In this paper, we propose a method of privacy preserving background extraction of video surveillance in multiple cloud servers based on Chinese Remainder theorem (CRT). the client uses the CRT to divide a video frame into several encrypted frames, which are sent to the corresponding cloud servers separately. the cloud servers conduct the algorithm of Visual Background Extractor (ViBe) in the encrypted video frames, hereafter, the results obtained are transmitted to the end server, in which the results are decrypted and combined to get the final extraction results in original videos. Finally, the results are transmitted back to the client. the proposed method has several advantages: (1) Based on our encryption method, the original extraction method in the original videos need not be changed; (2) Each cloud server learns only a portion of the video frame information, yet they cannot recover the original video even if the data is leaked; (3) Multiple cloud servers can improve the security of data and enhance the processing efficiency. the experimental results on several video surveillance datasets shows that our method can correctly extract the background as the original ViBe algorithm does while protecting the privacy of the client video data.

Software-Defined networking (SDN) has evolved as a new networking paradigm to solve many of current obstacles and limitations in communication networks. While initially intended mainly for single-domain networks, SDN technology is going to be deployed also to large cloud-based data centers where several customers, called tenants, share network resources. In a multi-tenant environment, the SDN technology allows the customers to have higher level of control over the available network resources. However, as the underlying network elements and control logic are shared between multiple tenants, the isolation between tenant domains becomes an important factor in the design of all multi-tenant solutions. In this paper, we propose a scalable system architecture based on OpenFlow and packet rewriting that provides isolation and controlled sharing between tenants while enabling them to have control over their assigned resources. the architecture addresses different facets of isolation in a multi-tenant network including traffic, address space, and control isolation. Our solution improves on previous ones by putting special emphasis on inter-tenant communication, e.g. on subcontractor relations in cloud services. the evaluation of the prototype indicates that our solution puts only a small performance overhead on forwarding in a shared network.

this paper presents SLAM, a customizable platform-independent SLA monitoring framework for federated cloud services. It supports monitoring of distributed nodes and hosts using an agent-based model. the framework generates monitoring templates according to the SLA terms that describe monitoring requirements and creates monitoring reports based on these generated templates. In addition, we propose a service benchmarking approach that can compare similar services offered by different providers without deploying monitoring agents on the providers' sites.

Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand (VoD) systems are rising as a new dominant way to distribute video content over IP networks. While many works addressed the broad area of P2P communications, few work has been focused onto the resource allocation in P2P streaming systems, where the real-time constraint adds another dimension to the problem. Most work on P2P resource allocation solve the problem with static rules strategies are not robust when they are facing to the content demand (popularity) trends. In this paper, we use a dynamic approach, which automatically selects the best strategy on a given time period. With the proposed P2P resource allocation method, a VoD service provider can combine any number of resource allocation strategies and formulate different performance objectives that meet its requirements. As part of our effort to develop algorithms that can be effectively deployed by broadband operators, we developed a full-scale emulator for P2P streaming that can support up to 10,000 peers. the P2P streaming emulator includes a VoD request generators, along with a SuperNode (with backend DataBase) that tracks and allocates network resources. In this paper the goal is to use a low complexity learning approach to enhance the performance of a P2P-VoD system based on evidence theory. the proposed approach is compared to both static and dynamic solutions. the obtained results show that the proposed approach allows to reduce the complexity of selecting resource allocation strategies, while maintaining a low rejection rate. the adoption of distributed database architectures for processing large data sets has shown to be an effective approach to reduce the response time of data analysis procedures. the same approach may be adopted on biological databases, which comprise vast amounts of data that are analyzed to detect genetic diseases, to understand their causing factors and to design process-blocking substances. Defining how data will be fragmented over several network nodes, though, is a non-trivial task. In this work, we have applied a recently proposed methodology for distributed data allocation to create several topology scenarios in a cloud computing infrastructure aiming to improve the performance of data analysis procedures. the proposed scenarios were evaluated using modMine, which is an instance of the Intermine Datawarehouse, as case study.
