We propose an extreme-scale distributed design exploration framework in the inter-cloud infrastructure consisting of supercomputers and cloud computing systems. In design explorations, we need to search optimal configurations of input parameters that maximize or minimize objective function(s). In our framework, simulations are performed in parallel employing multiple supercomputers of the Japanese nation-wide high-performance computing infrastructure, and virtual or real machines in academic cloud systems are employed for parameter surveys and optimizations with machine learning. To enable nation-wide scale collaborations of supercomputers and cloud systems, we employ scalable distributed databases and objective storages to store input design parameters and resulting output information generated by simulations.

5G is the next generation of mobile network. there are many requirements on 5G, such as high capacity, low latency, flexibility, and support for any-to-any communication. Cloud technology, in the form of a distributed cloud (also known as a network embedded cloud), is an enabler technology for 5G by allowing flexible networks that meet different user application requirements. On the other hand, Machine Type Communication (MTC) is a primary application for 5G, but it can add a high volume of control signaling. To manage the expected high volume of control signaling introduced by MTC, we identified the main control events that generate signaling messages in the network. then, we proposed a decentralized core network architecture optimized for the identified control events. the proposed control plane functions are independent in the sense that each can be executed separately. the control functions can utilize the distributed cloud to manage the enormous amount of control signaling by handling this signaling locally. Additionally, we present an analysis of the control signaling performance for each proposed control function. We conclude that it is beneficial to move session management to data centers collocated with the BS on 5G network when there is high user density.

In recent years, with the explosive growth of data, streaming data processing has played a more and more important role in processing big data. Different distributed architectures have been applied to process streaming data such as Storm, Spark and Samza. these architectures have their own unique and practical designs in order to adapt some special requirements in different distributed computing environments. these architectures have their own unique advantages when they are applied to process stream data. Consequently, these architectures have been successfully applied in production by some companies. Although these architectures are still having problems in some aspects, they have enough development potential in the future.

With the wide adoption of large-scale Internet services and big data, the cloud has become the ideal environment to satisfy the ever-growing storage demand, thanks to its seemingly limitless capacity, high availability and faster access time. In this context, data replication has been touted as the ultimate solution to improve data availability and reduce access time. However, replica placement systems usually need to migrate and create a large number of data replicas over time between and within data centers, incurring a large overhead in terms of network load and availability. In this paper, we propose CRANE, an effiCient Replica migrAtion scheme for distributed cloud Storage systEms. CRANE complements any replica placement algorithm by efficiently managing replica creation in geo-distributed infrastructures by (1) minimizing the time needed to copy the data to the new replica location, (2) avoiding network congestion, and (3) ensuring a minimal availability of the data. Our results show that, compared to swift (the OpenStack project for managing data storage), CRANE is able to minimize up to 30% of the replica creation time and 25% of inter-data center network traffic, while ensuring the minimum required availability of the data.

Current centralized cloud datacenters provide scalable computation-and storage resources in a virtualized infrastructure and employ a use-based "pay-as-you-go" model. But current mobile devices and their resource-hungry applications (e.g., speech-or face recognition) demand for these resources on the spot, though a mobile device's intrinsic characteristic is its limited availability of resources (e.g., CPU, storage, bandwidth, energy). thus, mobile cloud computing (MCC) was introduced to overcome these limitations by transparently making accessible the apparently infinite cloud resources to the mobile devices and by allowing mobile applications to (elastically) expand into the cloud. However, MCC often relies on a stable and fast connection to the mobile devices' surrogate in the cloud, which is a rare case in mobile scenarios. Moreover, the increased latency and the limited bandwidth prevent the use of real-time applications like, e.g. cloud gaming. Instead, mobile edge computing (MEC) or fog computing tries to provide the necessary resources at the logical edge of the network by including infrastructure components to create ad-hoc mobile clouds. However, this approach requires the replication and management of the applications' business logic in an untrusted, unreliable and constantly changing environment. Consequently, this paper presents a novel approach to allow mobile app developers to easily benefit from the features of MEC. In particular, we present a programming model and framework that directly fit the common app developers' mindset to design elastic and scalable edge-based mobile applications.

Virtualization is growing rapidly as a result of the increasing number of alternative solutions in this area, and of the wide range of application field. Until now, hypervisor-based virtualization has been the de facto solution to perform server virtualization. Recently, container-based virtualization - an alternative to hypervisors - has gained more attention because of lightweight characteristics, attracting cloud providers that have already made use of it to deliver their services. However, a gap in the existing research on containers exists in the area of power consumption. this paper presents the results of a performance comparison in terms of power consumption of four different virtualization technologies: KVM and Xen, which are based on hypervisor virtualization, Docker and LXC which are based on container virtualization. the aim of this empirical investigation, carried out by means of a testbed, is to understand how these technologies react to particular workloads. Our initial results show how, despite of the number of virtual entities running, both kinds of virtualization alternatives behave similarly in idle state and in CPU/Memory stress test. Contrarily, the results on network performance show differences between the two technologies.

Disaster recovery planning and securing business processes against outtakes have been essential parts of running a company for decades. As IT systems have become more important, and especially since more and more revenue is generated over the Internet, securing the IT systems that support the business processes against outages is essential. For cost reasons, we proposed Cloud computing for disaster recovery in prior work. In order to update and deploy a standby system, however, a deployment method that allows a provider independent, automated deployment of distributed systems is necessary. In this work we present such a deployment method. We show that by using Cloud Standby Deployment, the recovery time can be reduced significantly, and the distributed system can be deployed provider independently.

Android app repackaging has become a serious problem currently. To protect apps from tampering, code obfuscation, watermarking and other techniques have been designed. However, most of these approaches could only provide inadequate protection. Meanwhile, it is possible to achieve remote tamper-resistance in recent, especially for networking apps, with the development of cloud computing technology and the spread of networks. In this paper, we propose a novel remote protection mechanism for mobile apps in cloud computing environments. In the proposed mechanism, the app should download and execute some code from the cloud when some important function is called. Tamper proofing code which could check the app is tampered or not is embedded in the downloaded code. Furthermore, the code can only run correctly one time and is continuous changing, which makes it difficult for an adversary to analyze and modify.

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is a widespread cloud computing provisioning model where ICT infrastructure, including servers, storage and networking, is supplied on-demand, in a pay-as-you-go fashion. IaaS cloud providers give their clients virtual machines (VMs) that are controlled by cloud administrators who can run, stop, restore and migrate the VMs. A typical threat to IaaS is unauthorized access of untrustworthy administrators to cloud users' sensitive information residing in VMs' memory. In this paper we focus on the threat of users' cryptographic keys being stolen from the RAM of the VM they provision. We propose a decrypt-scatter/gather-decrypt technique that allows users to carry our encryption/decryption while protecting keys from unauthorized peeks on the part of cloud administrators. Our technique does not require modification to the current cloud architecture, but only the availability of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) capable of creating and holding a TPM-protected public/private key pair. It lends itself to security-as-a-service scenarios where third parties perform encryption/decryption on behalf of data owners.
