the automatic discovery of dependencies in distributed Cloud applications is very useful for large scale deployments. Dependencies can be used to identify the anomalies due to errors, failures or the performance bottleneck in applications. Although existing dependency models can be useful, we believe more comprehensive dependency model would improve anomaly detection in large scale distributed applications. We propose a VM dependency discovery system and introduce dependency primitives that incorporate complex application behavior/interaction patterns. We also formulate response time characteristics for each dependency primitive. Using the component dependencies and traffic monitoring, we develop a stochastic model to estimate the response time probability distribution for components and overall application. We evaluate and validate our system with various production applications. Experiments show that we can accurately discover application dependencies and also predict not only the average response time but the 95th percentile response time within 8% of the actual response time.*

Traditional computations of reachability preservation based on breadth-first search (BFS) results usually focus on small-scale datasets on stand-alone. In order to solve the bottlenecks of memory capacity and computing speed while traditional approaches manipulate large-scale datasets and intermediate data generated, we propose a MapReduce-based approach to compute the reachability preserving graph. Based on the distributed parallel computing platform with the MapReduce programming model, we first obtain the whole strongly connected components (SCCs) based on the BFS results of original graph dataset. For condensing SCCs, we present an updating method based on label propagation. Additionally, for further compression, equivalence classes are processed via analyzing BFS results based on reachability equivalence relation. the experiments show that the BFS-based parallel computation of reachability preservation can achieve a good compression ratio and speed up well on the Hadoop computing cluster.

Heterogeneous architectures have become more popular and widespread in the recent years with the growing popularity of general-purpose processing on graphics processing units, low-power systems on a chip, multi- and many-core architectures, asymmetric cores, coprocessors, and solid-state drives. the design and management of cloud computing data-centers must adapt to these changes while targeting objectives of improving system performance, energy efficiency and reliability. this paper presents HEROS, a novel load balancing algorithm for energy-efficient resource allocation in heterogeneous systems. HEROS takes into account the heterogeneity of a system during the decision-making process and uses a holistic representation of the system. As a result, servers that contain resources of multiple types (computing, memory, storage and networking) and have varying internal structures of their components can be utilized more efficiently.

Society is moving towards a socio-technical ecosystem in which physical and virtual dimensions of life are intertwined and where people interactions ever more take place with or are mediated by machines. Hybrid Diversity-aware Collective Adaptive Systems (HDA-CAS) is a new generation of socio-technical systems where humans and machines synergetically complement each other and operate collectively to achieve their goals. HDA-CAS introduce the fundamental properties of hybridity and collectiveness, hiding from the users the complexities associated with managing the collaboration and coordination of machine and human computing elements. In this paper we present an HDA-CAS system called SmartSociety, supporting computations with hybrid human/machine collectives. We describe the platform's architecture and functionality, validate it on two real-world scenarios involving human and machine elements and present a performance evaluation.

Hadoop is widely deployed distributed computing framework and makes creating distributed applications much easier. However, unlike text data, there is no existing video r/w interface for Hadoop, and many existing video analytic applications implemented in C/C++ are not compatible with Hadoop framework. In this paper, we propose an open source Hadoop video processing interface HVPI to extend Hadoop to support video analytic applications. It provides easy-to-use video r/w interface for developers to quickly build large-scale video analytic applications based on Hadoop, and native processing interface to help users easily port existing video analytic applications written in C/C++ into Hadoop platform. We also present two typical use cases of HVPI and do experiments based on them. Experimental results demonstrate that the applications built based on HVPI are both scalable and efficient.

More cooperation or coordination is necessary for future UDN (Ultra-Dense Network) scenario of 5G network, of which ICIC (Inter-Cell Interference Coordination) is a promising and typical scheme. Cooperating cellular network may be thought as a special kind of distributed computing system, whose basic theory and toolsets could be adopted. CAP theory for distributed computing state that any networked shared-data system can have at most two of three desirable properties: consistency (C), high availability (A) and tolerance to network partitions (P) of the data. Since partition could not be avoided in such system, consistency or availability has to be forfeited to a certain extent. this paper extends the CAP theorem to the UDN case, and redefines the consistency, availability and partition-tolerance in the context of future cellular network architecture. then ICIC process are interpreted with cellular CAP theorem, and the evaluation framework is developed. An improved ICIC scheme is proposed based on such framework.

the concept of using distributed computing to supply video games to end users has been growing in popularity. Internet cafes are one potential application for this concept. We consider a cloud-based model for Internet cafes where servers provide virtual machines with different specifications in order to meet different kinds of user demand (web browsing, low end gaming, medium end gaming, and high end gaming). In an Internet cafe, users arrive throughout the day with different demands and different durations for which they stay. Given the user demand over time and a fixed hardware set-up of servers, the task then consists of choosing which users to accept and how to allocate the accepted users to the servers in order to maximize the total profit of the Internet cafe. We formulate an integer programming model for computing an optimal choice of users to accept together with an efficient allocation of accepted users to servers. Computational results show that, when allocating users efficiently, using a cloud-based setting with servers providing virtual machines that exactly meet the users' demands can greatly improve resource efficiency in Internet cafes compared to classical zoning models that use desktop computers. At the same time, the total profit obtained from accepting users can be improved significantly due to the added flexibility when using an optimized user acceptance strategy.

For the past decade, there has been an increase in the frequency and impact of natural disasters. Information and communications technology (ICT) can be used to minimize the impact of disasters in many ways. However, before deployment, disaster-related ICT systems need to be tested and validated using the appropriate modeling and simulation tools. In this study, we propose a post-disaster mobility model at the community level based on real-world data during the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. the construction of an appropriate model is challenging because of the large amount of heterogeneous data collected. Nevertheless, a mobility model from these disaster big data will be useful in evaluating the effectiveness of different ICT-based disaster application systems.

the complexity of Cloud infrastructures is increasing every year, requiring new concepts and tools to face off topics such as process configuration and reconfiguration, automatic scaling, elastic computing and healthiness control. this paper presents a Smart Cloud solution based on a Knowledge Base, KB, with the aim of modeling cloud resources, Service Level Agreements and their evolution, while enabling the reasoning on cloud structures and implementing strategies of efficient smart cloud management and intelligence. the solution proposed is composed of Smart Cloud Engine, SCE, the Knowledge Base, KB, and the Supervisor and Monitoring module for data acquisition. It can be easily integrated with any cloud configuration manager, cloud orchestrator, and monitoring tool, since the connections with these tools are performed by using REST calls and XML files.

this paper presents Roboconf, an open-source distributed application orchestration framework for multi-cloud platforms, designed to solve challenges of current Autonomic computing Systems in the era of Cloud computing. It provides a Domain Specific Language (DSL) which allows to describe applications and their execution environments (cloud platforms) in a hierarchical way in order to provide a fine-grained management. Roboconf implements an asynchronous and parallel deployment protocol which accelerates and makes resilient the deployment process. Intensive experiments with different type of applications over different cloud models (e.g. private, hybrid, and multi-cloud) validate the genericity of Roboconf. these experiments also demonstrate its efficiency comparing to existing frameworks such as RightScale, Scalr, and Cloudify.
