We present our model of file systems and our merging semantics for resolving conflict updates in geo-distributed file systems. the system model fully describes a file system with all of its components including hard links. this model is able to identify all conflict cases which are classified into direct, such as concurrent updates to the same file, and indirect, such as cycles in the namespace of the file system. the merging semantics resolve all types of conflicts while being able to preserve the effect of all conflict updates. Our implementation of the system and the merging semantics outperforms the existing systems in terms of feature completeness. © Copyright 2015 by the Association for computing Machinery, Inc.

Despite numerous advantages that cloud computing offer (e.g., flexibility, elasticity, scalability, etc.), many potential clients are still hesitant to join the cloud due to their security and privacy concerns. Outsourcing the data to a cloud in a multitenant environment brings many security challenges including data leaks, threats, and malicious attacks. the cloud computing platform, virtual servers, and the provider's services are highly dynamic and diverse in nature, making the traditional access control mechanisms (e.g., firewalls and VLAN etc.) less effective in controlling the unauthorized access to cloud's data and resources. Several access control policies and authorization system have been proposed in literature to defend against cloud security threats. Most of these systems are designed to work with one or more access control policies. However, little work has been done to develop generic access control architecture capable to work with most of the available access control policies. In this paper, we present a new access control architecture using a global resource management system (GRMS) to effectively handle both local and remote access requests. the introduction of GRMS makes our proposed architecture semi distributed at the expense of minimal request-response time. In addition, our proposed architecture works effectively with both peered access control module (PACM) and virtual resource manager (VRM) to protect and manage all resources and services of cloud providers from unauthorized access.

Web crawlers work on the behalf of applications or services to find interesting and related information on the web. For example, search engines use web crawlers to index the Internet. Web crawlers have several challenges, such as complexity between links and highly intensive computation requirements when a web crawler wants to retrieve complex connected links. Another issue is the storage of a massive amount of indexed links or downloaded unstructured data, such as binary files, videos or images. As the volume of information on the Internet increases rapidly and requests may search data in a variety of formats including unstructured data, no cloud-based architecture exists in the literatures for web crawlers that could effectively address both highly intensive computing and storage issues. the cloud computing paradigm provides support for elastic resources and unstructured data, and provides pay-peruse features that allow individual businesses to run their own web crawlers for crawling the Internet or a limited web hosts. In this paper, we propose a cloud-based web crawler architecture that uses cloud computing features and the MapReduce programming technique. the proposed web crawler allows us to crawl the web by using distributed agents and each agent stores its own finding on a Cloud Azure Table (NoSQL database). the proposed web crawler also could store unstructured and massive amount of data on Azure Blob storage. We analyze the performance and scalability of the proposed web crawler and we describe the advantages of the proposed web crawler over traditional distributed web crawlers.

Load balancing is one of the most basic services needed by cloud applications. While today's clouds and load balancers provide highly customizable load distribution policies, they are forced out of necessity to ignore the impact of load balancing on the network. However, such network agnostic behavior can lead to inefficient utilization of cloud resources and poor performance, especially for upcoming network centric applications such as network function virtualization (NFV). But can network topology, a cloud property that is hidden from tenants, be made to effectively influence load balancing, a function that is intimately tied to per-tenant application structure that is largely invisible to the cloud? We answer that question in this paper by presenting Airfoil, a novel topology-aware distributed load balancer as a service (LBaaS) that takes network topology into consideration while providing cloud tenants with application-specific load balancing policies. By finding the best communication pattern with linear programming, the most efficient load balancing strategy is calculated without using any heuristics or approximations. We evaluate Airfoil over a range of scenarios from classical web applications to NFV pipelines, and show that it can decrease the network utilization of the most highly loaded network links by over 50%. For network constrained applications, such reductions imply a doubling of application capacity without any additional infrastructure.

Over the last years, the utilization of cloud resources has been steadily rising and an increasing number of enterprises are moving applications to the cloud. A leading trend is the adoption of Platform as a Service to support rapid application deployment. By providing a managed environment, cloud platforms take away a lot of complex configuration effort required to build scalable applications. However, application migrations to and between clouds cost development effort and open up new risks of vendor lock-in. this is problematic because frequent migrations may be necessary in the dynamic and fast changing cloud market. So far, the effort of application migration in PaaS environments and typical issues experienced in this task are hardly understood. To improve this situation, we present a cloud-to-cloud migration of a real-world application to seven representative cloud platforms. In this case study, we analyze the feasibility of the migrations in terms of portability and the effort of the migrations. We present a Docker-based deployment system that provides the ability of isolated and reproducible measurements of deployments to platform vendors, thus enabling the comparison of platforms for a particular application. Using this system, the study identifies key problems during migrations and quantifies these differences by distinctive metrics.

With the advent of social networks, a huge amount of information is generated and stored every day. the social networks therefore represent a potentially infinite source of user data, usable both for scientific and commercial applications. Specifically, they store a lot of data regarding the single individual and behavior, as well as information related to individuals and their relationship with other individuals, i. e. a sort of collective behavior. the combination of behavior and sentiment analysis tools with methodologies of affective computing could allow the extraction of useful data that convey information for different applications, such as detection of depression state in psychology, political events, stock marketing fluctuations. the paper surveys some data extraction tools for social networks and emerging computing trends such as behavior analysis, sentiment analysis and affective computing. then the paper proposes a first architecture for behavior analysis integrating those tools.

Epidemic protocols are a bio-inspired communication and computation paradigm for extreme-scale network system based on randomized communication. the protocols rely on a membership service to build decentralized and random overlay topologies. In a weakly connected overlay topology, a naive mechanism of membership protocols can break the connectivity, thus impairing the accuracy of the application. this work investigates the factors in membership protocols that cause the loss of global connectivity and introduces the first topology connectivity recovery mechanism. the mechanism is integrated into the Expander Membership Protocol, which is then evaluated against other membership protocols. the analysis shows that the proposed connectivity recovery mechanism is effective in preserving topology connectivity and also helps to improve the application performance in terms of convergence speed.

this paper describes a cloud-based platform, called RP-SMARF, for supporting research collaboration in the area of smart facilities management. More precisely, the proposed system delivers sophisticated domain-specific services to users by linking together disparate privately-owned elements such as data repositories, specialized hardware resources and specialized software applications into a unified framework. this allows research collaborators within a knowledge domain to easily run complex applications developed by researchers within the domain on complex datasets. Both batch-type processing as well as interactive application access are supported by the platform. the processing of live data streams generated in one site by an application residing in another site can also be performed. An authorization framework allows element owners to precisely control which users can access various elements. RP-SMARF unifies geographically dispersed heterogeneous resources for research collaborators. this simplifies making software created by researchers more usable by other researchers thereby making many researchers more productive.

Cloud Data centers aim to provide reliable, sustainable and scalable services for all kinds of applications. Resource scheduling is one of keys to cloud services. To model and evaluate different scheduling policies and algorithms, we propose FlexCloud, a flexible and scalable simulator that enables users to simulate the process of initializing cloud data centers, allocating virtual machine requests and providing performance evaluation for various scheduling algorithms. FlexCloud can be run on a single computer with JVM to simulate large scale cloud environments with focus on infrastructure as a service, adopts agile design patterns to assure the flexibility and extensibility, models virtual machine migrations which is lack in the existing tools, provides user-friendly interfaces for customized configurations and replaying. Comparing to existing simulators, FlexCloud has combined features for supporting public cloud providers, load-balance and energy-efficiency scheduling. FlexCloud has advantage in computing time and memory consumption to support large-scale simulations. the detailed design of FlexCloud is introduced and performance evaluation is provided. © 2015 IEEE.
