Edge and fog computing are emerging concepts extending traditional cloud computing by deploying compute resources closer to the users. this approach, closely integrated with carrier-networks, enables several future services, such as tactile internet, 5G and beyond telco services, and extended reality applications. the emphasis is on integration: the rigorous delay constraints, ensuring reliability on the distributed remote nodes, and the sheer scale altogether call for a powerful provisioning platform that offers the applications the best out of the underlying infrastructure. In this paper we investigate the resource provisioning problem in the edge infrastructure withthe consideration of probable failures. Our goal is to support high reliability of services withthe minimum amount of edge resources reserved to provide the necessary redundancy in the system. We design a resource provisioning algorithm, which takes into account network latency when pinpointing backup placeholders for virtual functions of edge applications. We implement the proposed solution in a simulation environment and show the efficient resource utilization results achieved by our fast heuristic algorithm.

As it is difficult to directly share data among different organizations, data federation brings new opportunities to the data-related cooperation among different organizations by providing abstract data interfaces. Withthe development of Cloud computing, organizations store data on the Cloud to achieve elasticity and scalability for data processing. the existing data placement approaches generally only consider one aspect, which is either communication cost or time cost, and do not consider the features of jobs that process the data. In this paper, we propose an approach to enable secure data processing on the Cloud withthe data from different organizations. the approach consists of a data federation platform for secure data processing on the Cloud named FedCube and a greedy data placement algorithm that creates a plan to store data on the Cloud in order to achieve multiple objectives based on a cost model. the cost model is composed of two objectives, i.e., reducing both monetary cost and execution time. We present an experimental evaluation by comparing our data placement algorithm withthe existing methods based on the data federation platform. the experiments show that our proposed algorithm significantly reduce the total cost (up to 69.8%).

the amount of data collected in various IT systems has grown exponentially in the recent years. So the challenge rises how we can process those huge datasets withthe fulfillment of strict time criteria and of effective resource consumption, usually posed by the service consumers. this problem is not yet resolved withthe appearance of edge computing as widearea networking and all its well-known issues come into play and affect the performance of the applications scheduled in a hybrid edge-cloud infrastructure. In this paper, we present the steps we made towards network-aware big data task scheduling over such distributed systems. We propose different resource orchestration algorithms for two potential challenges we identify related to network resources of a geographically distributed topology: decreasing end-to-end latency and effectively allocating network bandwidth. the heuristic algorithms we propose provide better big data application performance compared to the default methods. We implement our solutions in our simulation environment and show the improved quality of big data applications.

Withthe edge computing paradigm bringing processing power and storage capabilities closer to the edge of the network, the need for optimal workload placement strategies for distributed applications arises. this workload placement must cope withthe increasing complexity of the Internet of things (IoT) sensor-actuator infrastructure and be able to satisfy the requirements of each application in a volatile and heterogeneous edge infrastructure. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a well-established non-deterministic evolutionary algorithm, based on bird behavior; whose objective is to iteratively improve the solution of a problem over a given objective. the algorithm in PSO searches the solution space by creating a population of solution candidates known as particles and moving them with simple mathematical functions. In this study, we introduce a Binary Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (BMOPSO) algorithm to address the workload placement problem in Edge computing. By combining these modifications to the heuristic, we can efficiently make workload placement decisions based on specific predefined objectives. the experimental result of comparative simulations shows the benefits of the proposed BMOPSO algorithm versus a baseline, testing variations in the number of applications to be allocated.

AAL is increasingly gaining momentum thanks to the Internet of things (IoT). Edge-computing would boost the AAL success, since this kind of architecture promotes a sort of distributed cloud computing at the edges of the IoT network, thus reducing latency and improving reliability. this poster paper focuses on the implementation, in a AAL system based on such an IoT-Edge-computing coupled architecture, of an anomaly detection module able to detect deviations from the patient's Clinical Pathway (CP) and avoid processing of inconsistent or fake data, which could result in a serious life-threatening for a patient.
