Software is a communication system. the usual topic of communication is program behavior, as encoded by programs. Domain-specific libraries are codebooks, domain-specific languages are coding schemes, and so forth. To turn metaphor into method, we adapt tools from information theory - the study of efficient communication - to probe the efficiency with which languages and libraries let us communicate programs. In previous work we developed an information-theoretic analysis of software reuse in problem domains. this new paper uses information theory to analyze tradeoffs in the design of components, generators, and metalanguages. We seek answers to two questions: (1) How can we judge whether a component is over- or under-generalized? Drawing on minimum description length principles, we propose that the best component yields the most succinct representation of the use cases. (2) If we view a programming language as an assemblage of metalanguages, each providing a complementary style of abstraction, how can these metalanguages aid or hinder us in efficiently describing software? We describe a complex triangle of interactions between the power of an abstraction mechanism, the amount of reuse it enables, and the cognitive difficulty of its use. Copyright © 2007 ACM.

One of the themes in building reusable and maintainable software is identifying similarities and designing generic solutions to unify similarity patterns. In this paper, we analyze capabilities of J2EE to effectively unify similarity patterns found in Web Portals (WP). Our experimentation involved a family of WPs to support information sharing and team collaboration, built by our industry partner. While J2EE provides useful mechanisms for reuse of common services across components, we found its limitations in systematic across-the-board reuse in application domain-specific areas. To solve these problems, we applied a generative programming (GP) technique of XVCL on top of ME By unifying similarity patterns, we increased,the clarity of portal's conceptual structure as perceived by developers, reducing also the size of the original J2EE WP by 61%. Our solution enhanced traceability of information that mattered during changes. Based on that we hypothesized that XVCL-enhanced J2EE WP would be easier to maintain than the original J2EE WP. In the paper, we describe our solution and evaluate its engineering merits in both quantitative and qualitative ways.

In this paper, we propose a domain-specific aspect language to prevent the denials of service caused by resource management. Our aspects specify availability policies by enforcing time limits in the allocation of resources. In our language, aspects can be seen as formal timed properties on execution traces. Programs and aspects are specified as timed automata and the weaving process as an automata product. the benefit of this formal approach is two-fold: the user keeps the semantic impact of weaving under control and (s)he can use a model-checker to optimize the woven program and verify availability properties. Previous work on semantics-based multi-stage programming (MSP) language design focused on homogeneous designs, where the generating and the generated languages are the same. Homogeneous designs simply add a hygienic quasi-quotation and evaluation mechanism to a base language. An apparent disadvantage of this approach is that the programmer is bound to both the expressivity and performance characteristics of the base language. this paper proposes a practical means to avoid this by providing specialized translations from subsets of the base language to different target languages. this approach preserves the homogeneous "look" of multi-stage programs, and, more importantly, the static guarantees about the generated code. In addition, compared to an explicitly heterogeneous approach, it promotes reuse of generator source code and systematic exploration of the performance characteristics of the target languages. To illustrate the proposed approach, we design and implement a translation to a subset of C suitable for numerical computation, and show that it preserves static typing. the translation is implemented, and evaluated with several benchmarks. the implementation is available in the online distribution of MetaOCaml.

this paper presents FEATUREC++, a novel language extension to C++ that supports Feature-Oriented programming (FOP) and Aspect-Oriented programming (AOP). Besides well-known concepts of FOP languages, FEATUREC++ contributes several novel FOP language features, in particular multiple inheritance and templates for generic programming. Furthermore, FEATUREC++ solves several problems regarding incremental software development by adopting AOP concepts. Starting our considerations on solving these problems, we give-a summary of drawbacks and weaknesses of current FOP languages in expressing incremental refinements. Specifically, we outline five key problems and present three approaches to solve them: Multi Mixins Aspectual Mixin Layers, and Aspectual Mixins that adopt AOP concepts in different ways. We use FEATUREC++ as a representative FOP language to explain these three approaches. Finally, we present a case study to clarify the benefits of FEATUREC++ and its AOP extensions.

Smooth integration of domain-specific languages into a general purpose host language requires absorbing of domain code written in arbitrary syntax. the integration should cause minimal syntactical and semantic overhead and introduce minimal dependency on external tools. In this paper we discuss a DSL integration technique for the C++ programming language. the solution is based on compile-time parsing of the DSL code. the parser generator is a C++ template metaprogram reimplementation of a runtime Haskell parser generator library. the full parsing phase is executed when the host program is compiled. the library uses only standard C++ language features, thus our solution is highly portable. As a demonstration of the power of this approach, we present a highly efficient and type-safe version of printf and the way it can be constructed using our library. Despite the well known syntactical difficulties of C++ template metaprograms, building embedded languages using our library leads to self-documenting C++ source code.

Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) represent a proven approach to raising the abstraction level of programming. they offer high-level constructs and notations dedicated to a domain, structuring program design, easing program writing, masking the intricacies of underlying software layers, and guaranteeing critical properties. On the one hand, DSLs facilitate a straightforward mapping between a conceptual model and a solution expressed in a specific programming language. On the other hand, DSLs complicate the compilation process because of the gap in the abstraction level between the source and target language. the nature of DSLs make their compilation very different from the compilation of common General-Purpose Languages (GPLs). In fact, a DSL compiler generally produces code written in a CPL;low-level compilation is left to the compiler of the target CPL. In essence, a DSL compiler defines some mapping of the high-level information and features of a DSL into the target CPL and underlying layers (e.g., middleware, protocols, objects,...). this paper presents a methodology to develop DSL compilers, centered around the use of generative programming tools. Our approach enables the development of a DSL compiler to be structured on facets that represent dimensions of compilation. Each facet can then be implemented in a modular way, using aspects, annotations and specialization. Because these tools are high level, they match the needs of a DSL, facilitating the development of the DSL compiler, and making it modular and re-targetable. We illustrate our approach with a DSL for telephony services. the structure of the DSL compiler is presented, as well as practical uses of generative, tools for some compilation facets.

Anomaly detection based on generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) has been demonstrated its superiority on in imaging area. However, most existing GAN-based methods require noise-free datasets to accurately train the network, whereas neither collecting an absolute clean dataset or labeling the anomalies in the dataset are quite difficult for Internet of things (IoT) applications due to the harsh environment and the high dimensionality of the data. In this paper, we propose a robust GAN-based model for anomaly detection in IoT, which can accurately learn the data pattern unsupervisedly even with polluted training data. the new model adopts the framework of Bidirectional GAN (BiGAN) to enable an efficient representation mapping, and integrates the mechanism of Robust Principal component Analysis (RPCA) to rule out the noises of data from the training set. To improve its performance, a new objective function and scoring function are elaborately designed, while a proximal method and Alternating Direction Method of Multiplier (ADMM) are incorporated into the training process. Comparing our method with four state-of-the-art anomaly detection methods, the experimental results strongly confirm the superiority of our method with polluted IoT datasets. © 2022 IEEE.

this paper explores the definition, applications, and limitations of concepts and concept maps in C++, with a focus on library composition. We also compare and contrast concepts to adaptation mechanisms in other languages. Efficient, non-intrusive adaptation mechanisms are essential when adapting data structures to a library's API. Development with reusable components is a widely practiced method of building software. components vary in form, ranging from source code to non-modifiable binary libraries. the Concepts language features, slated to appear in the next version of C++, have been designed with such compositions in mind, promising an improved ability to create generic, non-intrusive, efficient, and identity-preserving adapters. We report on two cases of data structure adaptation between different libraries, and illustrate best practices and idioms. First, we adapt GUI widgets from several libraries, with differing APIs, for use with a generic layout engine. We further develop this example to describe the run-time concept idiom, extending the applicability of concepts to domains where run-time polymorphism is required. Second, we compose an image processing library and a graph algorithm library, by making use of a transparent adaptation layer, enabling the efficient application of graph algorithms to the image processing domain. We use the adaptation layer to realize a few key algorithms, and report little or no performance degradation. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
