Multi-view discriminant analysis (MvDA) is a powerful method for dimensionality reduction. However, intraclass and interclass sample scatter matrices in MvDA will deviate from true ones due to noise or limited training samples. To reduce the negative effect of the bias, in this paper we propose a novel method for learning multi-view low-dimensional representations, called fractional-order multi-view discriminant analysis (FMDA), which is based on fractional-order dispersion matrices built by sample spectrum reconstruction. Moreover, MvDA can be viewed as a special case of FMDA. A series of experiments show FMDA is effective and overall outperforms the state-of-the-art method MvDA.

this paper presents a systematic review of the recent development in ubiquitous robotics, with a focus on its implication on intelligence. Ubiquitous robot (Ubibot), the third generation robot, is characterized by its unprecedented power to sense environments and provide sophisticated services autonomously. Based on the architectures of existing Ubibot projects, we describe a general framework containing the perception, intelligence and execution modules as well as the middleware layer used to integrate the three modules to make them collaborate seamlessly. Two representative projects are introduced to exemplify the state-of-the-art progress in Ubibot, along with a brief discussion of various underlying communication techniques. In the perspective of intelligence, we point out that Ubibot opens up new horizons for investigating and applying popular AI techniques such as computer vision and pattern recognition, compared to traditional robots. Furthermore, a list of new challenging research topics is identified that deserve full consideration in the future to make Ubibot more robust, effective and adaptive.

Clustering evolutionary data (or called evolutionary clustering) has received an enormous amount of attention in recent years. A recent framework (called temporal smoothness) considers that the clustering result should depend mainly on the current data while simultaneously not deviate too much from previous ones. In this paper, evolutionary data is clustered by a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on r-dominance, and the corresponding algorithm is named rEvoC. the rEvoC considers the previous clustering result (or historical data) as the reference point. We propose three strategies to define the reference point and to calculate the distance between a reference point and an individual. Based on the reference point and the r-dominance relation, the search could be guided into the region, in which a solution not only could cluster the current data well, but also does not shift two much from the previous one. Additionally, the rEvoC adopts one step k-means as a local search operator to accelerate the evolutionary search. Experimental results on two different data sets are given. the experimental results demonstrate that, the rEvoC achieves better performance than the corresponding static clustering algorithm and the evolutionary k-means algorithm.

Given an ordering constraint of n random variables and the maximum in- degree u for any variable, the search space of Bayesian network structure reduces from n!2(n(n-1)/2) to the 2(n(n-1)/2). Even so, with the increase of the number of variables, the requirement of time cannot be tolerated. In this paper, we present a parallel Bayesian network structure learning algorithm based on variable ordering. the algorithm includes three components: 1. variable grouping: it completes variable partition;2. group learning: it completes independently construct of sub-Bayesian network;3. Between the groups learning: it asynchronously combines sub-Bayesian network in order to get the full Bayesian networks. We theoretically analyzed that time complexity of our algorithm is O(mu(2)nr), where u that is number of parent, In the worst case, u = n, complexity of the algorithm is O(mn(3)r). the empirical results present in term of time complexity grouping parallel algorithm has significance compared with the traditional algorithm.

the paper presents the results of the “Smart People for Smart Cities!” project funded by European Structural Funds Human Resources. “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia, Romania in partnership with UTI SA Romania, UNINOVA Portugal and INFOR ELEA Italy have collaborated to bridge and enhance people's skills and competences for the development of smart city applications within the university curricula of Applied Electronics, Computer Science and Environmental engineering specialties. the primary goal was to create an enhanced learning and teaching environment, goal that was achieved through specific objectives: (i.) to set up a research - testing laboratory where real conditions of a smart city is simulated; (ii.) to develop and implement a software instrument for students' evaluation; (iii.) to develop and implement a software solution for processing data provided by various types of sensors used in the smart city environment. the project successfully complemented the academic curricula with a module of practical applications, which simulate existing automation projects on the market, integrates data obtained from sensors and provides statistical models. Smart City Lab (SCL) computing system covers all stages of data processing in automated systems.

the article presents a methodology for the analysis of similarities between structural features of designed machine elements and the corresponding antipatterns. this methodology allows normalization of selected design solutions' characteristic features. the defined antipatterns are generic definitions of the possible incorrect design solutions. the article also presents antipatterns' attributes, as well as classification based on the root causes of errors in designed solutions. Examples of a step shaft have been used to illustrate the methodology of designed solution and its antipattern correspondence evaluation. Root causes of a design error, its importance, and similarities shared with other design errors have been analyzed for each of the presented antipatterns. Correctly designed shafts - not having the characteristics of an antipattern have also been presented.

Imbalance data constitutes a great difficulty for most algorithms learning classifiers. However, as recent works claim, class imbalance is not a problem in itself and performance degradation is also associated with other factors related to the distribution of the data as the presence of noisy and borderline examples in the areas surrounding class boundaries. this contribution proposes to extend SMOTE with a noise filter called Iterative-Partitioning Filter (IPF), which can overcome these problems. the properties of this proposal are discussed in a controlled experimental study against SMOTE and its most well-known generalizations. the results show that the new proposal performs better than exiting SMOTE generalizations for all these different scenarios.

the Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows is an important task in logistic planning. the expenditure on employing labor force, i.e., drivers for vehicles, accounts for most of the costs in this domain. We propose an initialized Ant Colony approach, IACO-VRPTW, with the primary goal (f(1)) to reduce the number of vehicle needed to serve the customers and the second-priority goal (f(2)) of decreasing the travel distance. Compared with methods that optimize f(2), IACO-VRPTW can reach or reduce f(1) in 8 out of 18 instances of the Solomon benchmark set, at the cost of increasing travel distance slightly. IACO-VRPTW can effectively decrease the number of vehicles, travel distance and runtime compared with an ACO without initialization.

this paper proposes a novel vision based multi-pedestrian tracking scheme in crowded scenes, which are very common in real-world applications. the major challenge of the multi-pedestrian tracking problem comes from complicated occlusions, cluttered or even changing background. We address these issues by creatively combining state-of-the-art pedestrian detectors and clustering algorithms. the core idea of our method lies in the integration of local information provided by pedestrian detector and global evidence produced by cluster analysis. A prediction algorithm is proposed to return the possible locations of missed target in offline detection, which will be re-detected by online detectors. the pedestrian detector in use is an online adaptive detector mainly based on texture features, which can be replaced by more advanced ones if necessary. the effectiveness of the proposed tracking scheme is validated on a real-world scenario and shows satisfactory performance.

Currently in the aerospace industry is a change from the traditional nest production towards an automated mass production, which requires the fulfillment of very high demands on precision and availability of the new technologies. In a research cooperation between industrial companies and research institutions skills were developed for an automated production of carbon fiber composite parts for aircraft industries. A major challenge of the project was the enormous demands on the quality and the necessary evidence. While in automotive industries quality control will normally be carried out by samples, in the aircraft industry a 100%-monitoring is necessary to assure the safety of the aircraft and to reduce financial risks for the involved enterprises. the manufacturing process of assembling the wing-cover components made of carbon fiber composite titanium / aluminum structures consists primarily of the operations of drilling, reaming, removal of temporary rivets and placing the final rivets. With about 5,000 rivets the correct and flawless insertion of the holes is extremely important. therefore a core area of the project was the line quality monitoring of a damage-free drilling of carbon-fiber composites. this included the automated measurement of all holes with respect to diameter, roundness and chamfer angle, but also the identification of possible delamination between layers of carbon fiber composites. Since the potential defects are not detectable using a single physical system, a platform for an open-system combination of various physical processes such as thermal imaging sensors, image processing and laser scanning systems was developed. In this way it is possible to compensate the disadvantages of the individual systems through the added properties of the corresponding systems.
