this paper introduces the newly developed Infini-Band (IB) Management Queue capability, used by the Host Channel Adapter (HCA) to manage network task data flow dependancies, and progress the communications associated with such flows. these tasks include sends, receives, and the newly supported wait task, and are scheduled by the HCA based on a data dependency description provided by the user. this functionality is supported by the ConnectX-2 HCA, and provides the means for delegating collective communication management and progress to the HCA, also known as collective communication offload. this provides a means for overlapping collective communications managed by the HCA and computation on the Central Processing Unit (CPU), thus making it possible to reduce the impact of system noise on parallel applications using collective operations. this paper further describes how this new capability can be used to implement scalable Message Passing Interface (MPI) collective operations, describing the high level details of how this new capability is used to implement the MPI Barrier collective operation, focusing on the latency sensitive performance aspects of this new capability. this paper concludes with small scale benchmark experiments comparing implementations of the barrier collective operation, using the new network offload capabilities, with established point-to-point based implementations of these same algorithms, which manage the data flow using the central processing unit. these early results demonstrate the promise this new capability provides to improve the scalability of high-performance applications using collective communications. the latency of the HCA based implementation of the barrier is similar to that of the best performing point-to-point based implementation managed by the central processing unit, starting to outperform these as the number of processes involved in the collective operation increases. © 2010 IEEE.

We present a case study parallelizing streaming aggregation on three different parallel hardware architectures. Aggregation is a performance-critical operation for data summarization in stream computing, and is commonly found in sense-and-respond applications. Currently available commodity parallel hardware provides promise as accelerators for streaming aggregation. However, how streaming aggregation can map to the different parallel architectures is still an open question. Streaming aggregation is obviously data parallel, but in practice its performance relies more on efficient data movement than computation, as we will demonstrate. Furthermore, we used workloads such as stock market data, which introduces unique data distribution problems. the three parallel architectures we use in our study are an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, an Nvidia GTX 285 GPU and the IBM PowerXCell 8i, an enhanced version of the Cell Broadband Engine architecture. Our implementations use OpenMP, CUDA and Cellgen (a compiler for OpenMP-like support on Cell) respectively. We find that the Cell's programmable local storage, and its low latency, high bandwidth access to main memory are best suited for parallelizing streaming aggregation. GPUs in the future can overcome the latency and bandwidth limitations by being fully integrated in the system's memory hierarchy. In order to attain good performance on existing parallel architectures, we find that developers must characterize their problem in terms of communication versus computation costs;memory access patterns, including assessing whether their algorithms reuse data;and the granularity of data access patterns. © 2010 ACM.

Position information of moving objects plays a vital role in many pervasive applications. therefore, moving objects databases (MODs), which can manage trajectory data of a number objects, are used in many pervasive systems. A crucial problem with MODs is how to efficiently track a remote object's trajectory in real-time, i.e. how to continuously report the sensed trajectory data to the MOD with minimal effort. For this purpose, we present a prototypical implementation of the Generic Remote Trajectory Simplification (GRTS) protocol, which optimizes storage consumption, processing, and communication costs. Our prototypical system includes a fully functional MOD as well as map-based mobile applications for subnotebooks and smartphones to illustrate the functioning of GRTS.

With traditional testing, the test case has no control over non-deterministic scheduling decisions, and thus errors de- pendent on scheduling are only found by pure chance. Java Path Finder (JPF) is a specialized Java virtual machine that can systematically explore execution paths for all possi- ble schedulings, and thus catch these errors. Unfortunately, execution-based model checkers, including JPF, cannot be easily adapted to support real-time programs. We propose a scheduling algorithm for JPF which allows testing of Safety Critical Java (SCJ) applications with peri- odic event handlers at SCJ levels 0 and 1 (without aperiodic event handlers). the algorithm requires that deadlines are not missed and that there is an execution time model that can give best- and worst-case execution time estimates for a given program path and specific program inputs. Our implementation, named RSJ, allows to search for scheduling dependent memory access errors, certain invalid argument errors, priority ceiling emulation protocol viola- tions, and failed assertions in application code in SCJ pro- grams for levels 0 and 1. It uses the execution time model of the Java Optimized Processor (JOP). We test our tool with Collision Detector and PapaBench application benchmarks. We provide an SCJ version of the C PapaBench benchmark, which implements an autopilot that has flown real UAVs. Copyright 2010 ACM.

this study describes the performance results on testing MatLab applications using the parallel computing and the distributed computing toolboxes under different platforms with different hardware and operating systems. Each trial was executed keeping the hardware fixed and changing the operating system to obtain unbiased results. To standardize the benchmarking test, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), discrete cosine transform (DCT), edge detection and matrix multiplication algorithms were executed. the results show that the leveraging of multicore platforms can speed up considerably the processing of images through the use of parallel computing tools in MatLab. Two different system hardware platforms (systems 1 and 2) were used in a series of experiments. Four rounds of experiments were performed benchmarking the FFT algorithm using the parallel tool box, by changing system platform, number of workers, image size and number of images. the results of the ANOVA test suggest that although there is no statistical significance on the factor represented by the operating system (OS) on system 1, the OS plays a significant roll on system 2. Moreover, on both systems there is statistical significance on the factors represented by the number of workers utilized and the number of images processed, yielding more than a 500% performance increase by using 8 MatLab workers on a dual quad-core machine.

Geocast protocols can be used to send messages to all receivers in a geographic target area. In this paper we present geocast routing algorithms for Wireless Mesh Networks that are tailored to symbolic addressing using symbolic location names like floor or room numbers. Since in particular indoors no geometric information is available, our algorithms use symbolic location models to derive directional information for routing. Moreover, we show how to integrate geometric and symbolic geographic routing algorithms into a hybrid routing approach which is applicable to larger areas consisting of symbolically and geometrically defined locations.

High level context recognition and situation detection are enabling technologies for unobtrusive mobile computing systems. Significant progress has been made in processing and managing context information, leading to sophisticated frameworks, middlewares, and algorithms. Despite great improvements, context aware systems still require a significantly increased recognition accuracy for high-level context information on uncertain sensor data to enable the robust execution of context-aware applications. Recently Adaptable Pervasive Workflows (APF)s have been presented as innovative programming paradigm for mobile context-aware applications. We propose a novel Flow Context System (FlowCon) that builds upon APFs. FlowCon uses structural information from the APF to increase accuracy of uncertain high-level context information up to 49%. this way we make an important step to enable robust execution of mobile context-aware applications.

Finding a vast array of applications, the problem of computing the convex hull of a set of sorted points in the plane is one of the fundamental tasks in pattern recognition, morphology and image processing. the main contribution of this paper is to show a simple parallel algorithm for computing the convex hull of a set of n sorted points in the plane and evaluate the performance on the dual quad-core processors. the experimental results show that, our implementation achieves a speed-up factor of approximately 7 using 8 processors. Since the speed-up factor of more than 8 is not possible, our parallel implementation for computing the convex hull is close to optimal. Also, for 2 or 4 processors, we achieved a super linear speed up.
