this paper presents an experimental performance study of a parallel implementation of the Poissonian image restoration algorithm. Hybrid parallelization based on MPI and OpenMP standards is investigated. the implementation is tested for high-resolution radiographic images on a supercomputer using Intel Xeon processors as well as Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. the experimental results show an essential improvement when running experiments for a variety of problem sizes and number of threads. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

this paper introduces three computer-assisted applications designed for learning foreign vocabulary in an informal setting. the first one, images recommendation application, generates appropriate image recommendations for representing a word. It tackles the challenge for a foreign language learner to determine appropriate images from a standard web search engine such as Google, Yahoo, Flicker, etc. the second application, learning context representation application, generates learning contexts automatically from lifelogging images. It addresses problems associated with describing a learning context in the forms of hand-written descriptions, keeping notes, or taking memos. the third application we discuss here, namely location-based associated word recommendation application, generates recommendations of associated words in a particular learning location by analyzing word learning histories. It seeks to answer a critical question: what I should learn next? this is a critical challenge for the users of ubiquitous learning tools. In order to recommend potential vocabularies which a learner could be learning in a particular location, this study recommends associated words and topic-specific vocabularies. these applications are for AIVAS (Appropriate Image-based Vocabulary Learning System), a platform for computer-assisted vocabulary learning. We report here several evaluations, including human assessment and data-driven assessments, that have been carried out to reveal the importance of these systems.

A fundamental problem in Bayesian statistics is the accurate evaluation of multidimensional integrals. A comprehensive experimental study of quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms based on Sobol sequence combined with Matousek linear scrambling and a comparison with adaptive Monte Carlo approach and a lattice rule based on generalized Fibonacci numbers has been presented. the numerical tests show that the stochastic algorithms under consideration are efficient for multidimensional integration and especially for computing high dimensional integrals. It is a crucial element since this may be important to be estimated in order to achieve a more accurate and reliable interpretation of the results in Bayesian statistics which is foundational in applications such as machine learning.

Quantum computing has quickly become at the vanguard of many computer science fields today. this is motivated by quantum computers ability to perform computational tasks with efficiencies that are not possible with classical computers. Quantum computing technology has a lasting potential impact on society and a broad implications on many aspects of our lives. Communications Industry Researchers (CIR) estimates that the global quantum-computing market is expected to reach $1.9 billion in 2023, increasing to $8 billion by 2027, in spending on associated software and services. Although quantum computing has several advantages, it threatens the current cryptographic techniques, which are necessary for today’s Internet standards like the Transport Layer Security (TLS). this is due to its ability to perform infinite complex computations in parallel. therefore, it is expected that quantum computers will be able to solve the key distribution problem and break every single cryptography and authentication algorithm based on Asymmetric cryptography, such as: RSA, ECC, and *** emerging technologies such as the Internet of things (IoT), blockchain, autonomous vehicles, 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics all rely on cryptography for their secure operation. Although quantum computing supports technological evolution and growth, it will pose a threat to the current progress and future development of these technologies. therefore, cryptography and authentication techniques need improvements as introducing quantum computing would put today’s cybersecurity in serious risk. NSA and NIST proposed solutions to tackle these challenges. However, these solutions are still immature as they need major upgrade of hardware implementation. Cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology and smart contracts could fundamentally change the way how financial products and financial services are implemented and operated. While many frameworks for implementing such blockchain applications already exist, these are usually implemented using languages either considered "fancy" today, like e.g. Go, or are traditionally used for system software, such as C++. On the other hand, the core business applications e.g. in financial services are typically implemented using enterprise platforms such as Java Enterprise Edition (EE) and/or COBOL. therefore, to improve the integration of blockchain technology in such applications, in this paper we argue in favor of a legacy-friendly distributed ledger solution by introducing QWICSchain, an implementation build on web services using established open-source enterprise technologies such as Java EE and PostgreSQL. It supports the parallel execution of transactions on the blockchain and in existing legacy applications, thus enabling the blockchain-based modernization of existing IT infrastructures.

the reversal of transactions due to blockchain ledger reorganization has become a major hindrance for public blockchain technologies' adoption in real-world business and financial applications. Since a typical real-world product, service, or agreement cannot be reversed;associated transactions in the blockchain ledger must also be final. this paper describes and analyzes the transaction finality solution for our proof of work (PoW) mining based blockchain network, the Kona Blockchain Platform. the solution works even if 49% of the network's total mining power is compromised due to malicious attacks. Although designed for our specific platform, the ideas from the solution can be easily adapted to achieve transaction finality in existing public blockchain networks. this paper also discusses how this can be done. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first solution for deterministic transaction finality for blockchain networks incentivized exclusively by PoW mining.

In order to adapt to the recent phenomenon of exponential growth of time series data sets in both academic and commercial environments, and with the goal of deriving valuable knowledge from this data, a multitude of analysis software tools have been developed to allow groups of collaborating researchers to find and annotate meaningful behavioral patterns. However, these tools commonly lack appropriate mechanisms to handle massive time series data sets of high cardinality, as well as suitable visual encodings for annotated data. In this paper we conduct a comparative study of architectural, persistence and visualization methods that can enable these analysis tools to scale with a continuously-growing data set and handle intense workloads of concurrent traffic. We implement these approaches within a web platform, integrated with authentication, versioning, and locking mechanisms that prevent overlapping contributions or unsanctioned changes. Additionally, we measure the performance of a set of databases when writing and reading varying amounts of series data points, as well as the performance of different architectural models at scale.

Maintaining population diversity is critical to the performance of a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Applying appropriate strategies for measuring population diversity is important in order to ensure that the mechanisms for controlling population diversity are provided with accurate feedback. Sequence-wise approaches to measuring population diversity have demonstrated their effectiveness in assisting with maintaining population diversity for ordered problems, however these processes increase the computational costs for solving ordered problems. Research in distributed GAs have demonstrated how applying different distribution models can affect an GA's ability to scale and effectively search the solution space. this paper proposes a distributed GA with adaptive parameter controls for solving ordered problems such as the travelling salesman problem(TSP), capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) and the job-shop scheduling problem (JSSP). Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach. © 2019 IEEE.

this paper proposes a heterogeneous processor design for CNN-based AI applications on IoT devices. the heterogeneous processor contains an embedded RISC-V CPU that works as a general processor and an efficient CNN-accelerator that supports a variety of CNN models with a list of macro instructions. For demonstration, we implement a prototype on an FPGA platform with the RISC-V CPU working under 20 MHz and the CNN accelerator working under 100 MHz. As a case study, we run a CNN-based face detection and recognition application on this prototype. the prototype can process one image in 0.72 seconds and an ASIC implementation working under 400 MHz can process one image in less than 0.15 seconds by estimation, which can satisfy the needs for many IoT scenarios such as access control systems and check-in systems. © 2020 the Authors. the performance of Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) would be significantly improved by organizing cloud servers into a hierarchical distributed architecture, resulting in low-latency access and faster response when compared to centralized cloud. However, the distributed organization introduces a new type of decision making problem for placing and executing functions to a specific cloud server. In order to handle the problem, we extended a well-known cloud computing simulator, CloudSim. the extended CloudSim enables users to define FaaS functions with various characteristics and service level objectives (SLOs), place them across geo-distributed cloud servers, and evaluate per-function performance. Proof-of-Concept (PoC) evaluation results show the potential of our CloudSim extension in terms of execution efficiency and simulation reality. © 2019 IEEE.
