ELM with kernels and MapReduce have an unparalleled advantage of other similar technologies, which attract widely attention in machine learning and distributed data processing communities respectively. In this paper, we combine the advantage of ELM with kernels and MapReduce, and propose a distributed Extreme Learning Machine with kernels based on MapReduce framework (DK-ELMM), which makes full use of the parallel computing ability of MapReduce framework and realizes efficient learning of large-scale training data. In particular, we present a spectral-spatial DELMM-based classifier for hyperspectral remote sensing images that integrates the information provided by extended morphological profiles. the proposed spectral-spatial classifier allows different weights for both (spatial and spectral) features outperforming other ELM-based classifiers in terms of accuracy for land cover applications. the accuracy classification results are also better than those obtained by equivalent spectral-spatial SVM-based classifiers.

SATCOM on the move with electrical beam scanning capabilities has found great interest recently due to its low profile and low maintenance cost for both civilian and military applications. Uniformly distributed array elements have been widely used for phased array antennas. However, a growing number of research on non-uniform distributed array has been published. In contrast to uniformly distributed elements, non-uniformly distributed phased arrays provide the designer with a degree of freedom of additional element spacing through their wide-angle scanning property that mitigates mutual coupling between antenna elements and allows placement of microwave circuits beneath the antenna elements. this paper presents the design of a non-uniformly spaced dual-linearly polarized phased array antenna with a wide-angle scanning feature for Ku-band mobile direct broadcasting satellite reception systems. the proposed array is formed using 64 multilayer microstrip antenna elements. this array structure could be a promising candidate for future low-cost microwave and millimeter-wave applications in the mobile satellite communications systems not only for military use but also for civilian applications. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce a runtime monitoring method for Actor-based programs and present a Scala module that realizes the proposed method. the primary characteristic of our method is that it supports asynchronous message-passing based on the Actor model. Besides, the module does not require specialized languages for describing application properties to be monitored. Once a developer incorporates the module in his/her application, it continuously checks whether the application satisfies certain properties described as Scala code and invokes mitigation code when it finds the violation of the properties. this paper also provides two non-trivial use cases to illustrate how the module can be seamlessly integrated into actual modern Scala applications. We also demonstrate the efficiency of the module using a set of benchmarks that resulted in only 8% of the experiments causing more than 5% runtime overhead.

this paper discusses a new parallelization approach of the dynamic relaxation method, which is programmed with the NVIDIA CUDA API and executed on the graphics cards (GPU) of a computer. the main advantage of a GPU card is that it has a very large number of computing cores and a separate memory from the computer and they may reside inside a normal desktop computer. However due to architectural simplifications of the GPU systems, synchronization of cores is rather limited. this has a major effect on the parallelization, since the contribution of calculated values at the boundary nodes would require some form of synchronization. this limitation resulted in the new parallelization approach, where the nodes of the finite element mesh are distributed between the cores of the GPU and the elements are "duplicated". the paper discusses the implementation details of this new parallel approach and some performance measurements of the new parallel dynamic relaxation method on GPU systems are also presented.

the war on terrorism, radicalism and violent extremism is no longer confined to the battlefield;it has become omnipresent in the recent years with militant, terrorists and insurgent groups actively recruiting new technologies as platform to impel their ideologies worldwide. Nonetheless, one thing remains constant in the fight against radicalism equation, that is, the information about radical individuals, whether personal, demographical, social or economic information. the ability to identify, classify and profile potential radicals based on such information has an appealing trait for security agencies around the world. the Intelligence and Security Informatics research field emphasizes the importance of engaging multidiscipline technologies to provide security-related applications that serve as aiding tools in combating terrorism and other forms of violent extremism. In this paper, the authors focus on radical Islamism and hypothesize that Islamist radicals have identifiable information and behavioral traits that could be utilized to identify their ideological motive uniquely amongst other radicals. Four different supervised machine learning algorithms are applied to validate this hypothesis using the "profiles of individual radicalization in the United States" dataset and their performance is compared and discussed. the evaluation results support the authors' hypothesis and show that profiling religious extremists can be achieved with high recall and precision using machine learning models. Simulating systems with evolving relational structures on massively parallel computers require the computational work to be evenly distributed across the processing resources throughout the simulation. Adaptive, unstructured, mesh-based finite element and finite volume tools best exemplify this need. We present EnGPar and its diffusive partition improvement method that accounts for multiple application specified criteria. EnGPar's performance is compared against its predecessor, ParMA. Specifically, partition improvement results are provided on up to 512Ki processes of the Argonne Leadership computing Facility's Mira BlueGene/Q system. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

Sensor networks have become ubiquitous - being present from personal smartphones to smart cities deployments - and are producing large volumes of data at increasing rates. distributed event stream processing systems, in its turn, are a specific kind of systems that help us to parallelize event processing. therefore, they provide us capabilities to produce quick insights and decisions, in near real-time, on top of multiple data streams. However, current systems for large scale processing do not focus on Internet of things and Sensor Network workloads, which makes the performance decrease quickly as the workload size increases. In order to process large scale events with acceptable latency percentiles and high throughput, special systems are needed, such as distributed event stream processing systems. In this work, we propose an architecture for Internet of things data workloads, in a combination of sensor networks data sources and distributed event stream processing systems, focused on smart grid data profiles. In our evaluations, the system was able to process up to 45K messages per second using 8 processing nodes, while providing stable latencies for micro-batches above 30 seconds.

In this review, the aim is to present a complete outlook for innovative charging infrastructures. In a real smart grid scenario, these infrastructures are candidates to support the integration of electric and hybrid mobility with distributed energy sources. In this paper, at the outset, an analysis of the scientific and technical literature about main international standards and classifications has been provided. Also taken into consideration in this analysis are the expected challenges related to charging technologies for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, giving specific details on current and possible future trends for both stationary and dynamic inductive charging systems. In particular, for each charging level, traditional and more innovative power electronic architectures equipped with the new technologies that support both slow and fast conductive charging operations for the new-generation road vehicle-have been reported, described and analysed in detail. the analysis has been conducted through a comparison of power architectures, in terms of efficiency, scalability and charging power/time of the vehicle battery packs. Specific attention has also been devoted to off-board DC fast-charging architectures, which play a fundamental role in the integration of stationary energy storage systems and renewable energy sources with the main grid. Finally, in this review, a wide range of the most interesting applications, technical experiences and international pilot projects have been summarized and discussed, with specific references to the new technologies mentioned above. the overview reported in this paper highlights the importance of a proper charging infrastructure, in combination with next generation energy storage technologies, to support the large-scale diffusion of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
