Cloud computing has emerged as a service model that enables on-demand network access to a large number of available virtualized resources and applications with a minimal management effort and a minor price. the spread of Cloud computing technologies allowed dealing with complex applications such as Scientific Workflows, which consists of a set of intensive computational and data manipulation operations. Cloud computing helps such Workflows to dynamically provision compute and storage resources necessary for the execution of its tasks thanks to the elasticity asset of these resources. However, the dynamic nature of the Cloud incurs new challenges, as some allocated resources may be overloaded or out of access during the execution of the Workflow. Moreover, for data intensive tasks, the allocation strategy should consider the data placement constraints since data transmission time can increase notably in this case which implicates the increase of the overall completion time and cost of the Workflow. Likewise, for intensive computational tasks, the allocation strategy should consider the type of the allocated virtual machines, more specifically its CPU, memory and network capacities. Yet, a critical challenge is how to efficiently schedule the Workflow tasks on Cloud resources to optimize its overall quality of service. In this paper, we propose a QoS-aware algorithm for Scientific Workflows scheduling that aims to improve the overall quality of service (QoS) by considering the metrics of execution time, data transmission time, cost, resources availability and data placement constraints. We extended the parallel Cat Swarm Optimization (PCSO) algorithm to implement our proposed approach. We tested our algorithm within two sample Workflows of different scales and we compared the results to those given by the standard PSO, the CSO and the PCSO algorithms. the results show that our proposed algorithm improves the overall quality of service of the tested Workflows.

Matrix multiplication is one of the most widely used computational kernels in scientific computing and machine learning. Using dedicated circuit for matrix multiplication can reduce the computational time and energy consumption. Traditional matrix multipliers always adopt linear array architecture, which works inefficiently when the size of matrix sub-block is much smaller than the array length. Using short array structure can improve the computational efficiency at the cost of occupying more memory bandwidth. In this paper, we present a workload sensitive dynamic scaling matrix multiplier structure, which can dynamically adjust the array length according to the matrix size. We build a prototype system on a Xilinx Zynq XC7Z045 FPGA. the result shows that compared with a fixed array architecture our design achieves much better performance and needs less memory bandwidth.

Droop control is the most favorable choice in wireless control of the grid-forming DGs connected in parallel. But, in microgrid applications, the dynamic characteristic of the conventional droop control is poor because the inertia is extremely low and the transmission line is relatively short. A simple output impedance parameter control method which minimizes the circulating current between grid-forming DGs in the steady-state is proposed in this paper. It also enhances power and harmonic sharing accuracy. the proposed scheme utilizes adjustable virtual output impedance instead of the reactive droop controller. the effectiveness of the proposed scheme was validated through the high-speed FPGA-based real-time simulation which runs the power circuit model every 500 ns.

Information and communication technology witnesses a raise of open, distributed systems that consist of various heterogeneous elements. Within such an environment, individual elements have to efficiently fulfil their goals, which may require cooperation with others. As a consequence, a variety of threats appears that need to be handled and circumvented in the entity's behaviour. One major technical approach to provide a working environment for such systems is to introduce technical trust. In this paper, we present a basic threat model that comprises the most important challenges in this context - related to the basic system and the trust management, respectively. In this work, a cloud infrastructure is analysed and deployed to virtualize computing laboratories. Virtualization of computing resources allows the user to face a single computing interface whose capabilities are really offered by a cloud system that makes use of its processing capability on demand. the use of this proposed infrastructure reduces the cost of equipment investments as well as maintenance of real laboratories and further, it makes a more efficient use of available resources with a transparent user experience.

High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments at the LHC collider at CERN were among the first scientific communities with very high computing requirements. Nowadays, researchers in other scientific domains are in need of similar computational power and storage capacity. Solution for the HEP experiments was found in the form of computational grid - distributed computing infrastructure integrating large number of computing centers based on commodity hardware. these infrastructures are very well suited for High throughput applications used for analysis of large volumes of data with trivial parallelization in multiple independent execution threads. More advanced applications in HEP and other scientific domains can exploit complex parallelization techniques using multiple interacting execution threads. A growing number of High Performance computing (HPC) centers, or supercomputers, support this mode of operation. One of the software toolkits developed for building distributed computing systems is the DIRAC Interware. It allows seamless integration of computing and storage resources based on different technologies into a single coherent system. this product was very successful to solve problems of large HEP experiments and was upgraded in order to offer a general-purpose solution. the DIRAC Interware can help including also HPC centers into a common federation to achieve similar goals as for computational grids. However, integration of HPC centers imposes certain requirements on their internal organization and external connectivity presenting a complex co-design problem. A distributed infrastructure including supercomputers is planned for construction. It will be applied for inter-disciplinary large-scale problems of modern science and technology.

In this paper the authors present a research tool in the form of an IT system used to analyse the status of agricultural crops with the simultaneous use of spatial data and raster images sourced from drones. the authors have designed and delivered their original IT system using the latest technologies, including SQL Server 2012, ADO. NET Entity Framework API, Google Maps API, HTML5 and the Visual Studio 2013 integrated development environment. the system comprises a set of applications that support the process of collecting and processing of interrelated geographic data and raster images.

Microservices is a modern approach to building cloud applications. It has many advantages, but it also has shortcomings. these include, in particular, the complexity of testing. this article describes development of a cloud service for microservice applications testing. We provide analysis of existing solutions and methodologies. On the basis of the analysis, we define the main requirements and use cases for the system. We describe the architecture of developed cloud service for microservice applications testing and the implementation details of its individual components.

Graph-mining is a class of data-mining problems where programs involve the processing of data modeled as graphs. these applications often exhibit irregular and data-dependent communication patterns, hampering parallelization opportunities on distributed architectures. Many tools and frameworks were created for the scalable processing of graphs but their comparison is non-trivial on distributed architectures as there is no efficiency metrics with respect to distributed resource usage. Considering an in-house use-case, program trace analysis for parallelization optimizations, we study the benefits and limits of a graph-processing framework for a tangible application. the algorithm was implemented using GraphLab and executed on a humble 7-node commodity cluster with input instances up to 40 million vertices and 50 million edges. We propose in this paper an in-depth analysis of the GraphLab system to evaluate its performance and scalability in the context of program trace analysis. the analysis is driven both by traditional and domain-specific metrics and contributes to a better understanding of the system behavior.
