Spiking neural P systems (in short, SN P systems) is a class of distributed parallel computing models. parallel computation of matrix operations has been supported on some new computing devices such as GPU, which provides a promising way to simulate the parallel computation of SN P systems. In this paper a matrix representation method of parallel computation for SN P systems is developed. In firing mechanism of SN P systems, the delay factor plays the role of controlling the receiving of spikes in neurons and the opportunity of emitting the spikes after the firing. In order to achieve the parallel computation of SN P systems, several matrices or vectors are introduced to decompose the firing mechanism of neurons. the parallel computation procedure of SN P systems can be achieved by the operations of the matrices or vectors. Two examples are used to illustrate the parallel computation procedure using the matrix operations. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.

Model reuse is a key issue to be resolved in parallel and distributed simulation when developing military simulation applications at present. However, component model built by different domain experts usually have diversiform interfaces, couple tightly and bind with simulation platforms and specific applications closely. As a result, they are difficult to be reused across different simulation platforms as well as applications. In addition, traditional model reuse ways lack consideration about reusability efficiency of similar reusable models. As for developing warship models in practical application, there also lack pragmatic method to describe its simulation space from conception space. To address the problem, this paper first proposed the parameterization-configurable framework for reusable component model that supports similar models once developed but multiple reused adapting to varied function requirement. Based on this framework, then our reusable model development approach for warship model is elaborated, which contains three phases: (1) design the warship configurable function set based on capacity demand;(2) use CMPA (Capacity, Mission, Process, Action) description method to map the function set from conception model to simulation model;(3) implement and encapsulate the model with the reusable simulation model development specification. the approach provides a pragmatic technical means for developing warship component reusable models in complex military simulation application, which helps improving efficiency of development and could be referenced for other similar models.

Code offloading strives for increasing the energy efficiency and execution speed of mobile applications on resource-constrained mobile devices. First approaches considered only a code offloading between two (or three) tiers, executing code either locally on the mobile device or remotely on a powerful server in the vicinity or in a distant cloud. However, new execution environments comprise multiple tiers, containing highly distributed heterogeneous resources. We present in this paper our Code Bubbling Offload System (CoBOS). CoBOS targets n-tier environments containing highly distributed heterogeneous resources with different performance characteristics and cost implications. In such n-tier environments, it is very costly for a resource-constrained mobile device to gather a global view on available resources. As a result, we propose the novel concept of code bubbling. Code bubbling moves code dynamically and adaptively towards more powerful and more distant tiers, enabling an efficient and scalable code offloading in n-tier environments. Each tier makes autonomous decisions to execute code in the tier or forward it further to the next tier. To support such a recursive escalation of code along autonomous tiers, CoBOS offloads self-contained offload requests that possess all of the required information for the processing. Our real-world evaluation shows that CoBOS decreases the energy consumption by 77% and the execution time by 83% for code offloading in n-tier environments. © 2016 ACM.

We review several questions at the intersection of Big Data, Clouds and HPC with the large scale simulations usually run on supercomputers and the target of the exascale initiative. We base this on an analysis of many big data and simulation problems and a set of properties -the Big Data Ogres -characterizing them where we distinguish data and model properties. We consider broad topics: What are the application and user requirements? e.g. is the data streaming, how similar are commercial and scientific requirements? What is execution structure of problems? e.g. is it dataflow or more like MPI? Should we use threads or processes? Is execution pleasingly parallel? What about the many choices for infrastructure and middleware? Should we use classic HPC cluster, Docker or OpenStack? Where are Big Data (Apache) approaches superior/inferior to those familiar from Grid and HPC work? the choice of language -C++, Java, Scala, Python, R highlights performance v. productivity trade-offs. What is actual performance of Big Data implementations and what are good benchmarks? Is software sustainability important and is the Apache model a good approach to this? the difference between capability and capacity computing on HPC clusters.

Summary form only given. Big data and cognitive computing are driving fundamental changes in technology, business, and society. With its exponentially increasing volume, velocity and variety, big data is hailed as the world's new natural resource. It promises to be for the 21st century what steam power was for the 18th, electricity for the 19th, and oil and gas for the 20th. the biggest value of big data lies in the deep, actionable insights that can be derived from the raw data and leveraged for competitive advantages. Cognitive computing is a key enabling technology for turning big data into insights. Different from the traditional programmable systems, cognitive systems are able to scale and extend human knowledge, reason with purpose, and learn and improve over time. the rise of cognitive systems represents the dawn of a new era of computing, whose focus has shifted from automating the world to understanding the world. In this talk, I will discuss the implications of big data and cognitive computing. I will reflect on our experience at IBM building the Watson Health Cloud, and discuss how big data and cognitive computing can come together to enable innovative health solutions that tackle many of the clinical, societal, and economic issues faced by today's health industry. I will present use cases, highlight the challenges, describe our approaches, and relate to client experiences as appropriate.

this paper presents a suitable output voltage control approach for parallel distributed generation (DG) units working in standalone operating mode. Indeed, an Adaptive Multi Resonant controller with weighted State Feedbacks is optimally designed for the voltage control loop while a Proportional regulator is proposed for the inner current loop. thankful to its frequency adjusting ability, the proposed multi-loop controller is also expanded to a wireless power sharing controlled parallel inverters. A co-simulation is carried out combining Matlab/Simulink and PSIM environments in order to highlight the effectiveness of the global control structure which ensures high tracking performance with reduced rate of harmonic distortion, deals efficiently with any load disturbances and may face large frequency deviation while an accurate power sharing is maintained among the parallel DG units.

In this paper we introduce threshold Public Key Encryption with Keyword Search (TPEKS), a variant of PEKS where the search procedure for encrypted keywords is distributed across multiple servers in a threshold manner. TPEKS schemes offer stronger privacy protection for keywords in comparison to traditional PEKS schemes. In particularly, they prevent keyword guessing attacks by malicious servers. this protection is not achievable in a single-server PEKS setting. We show how TPEKS can be built generically from any anonymous Identity-Based threshold Decryption (IBTD), assuming the latter is indistinguishable, anonymous and robust. In order to instantiate our TPEKS construction we describe an efficient IBTD variant of the Boneh-Franklin IBE scheme. We provide an appropriate security model for such IBTD schemes and give an efficient construction in the random oracle model. TPEKS constructions are particularly useful in distributed cloud storage systems where none of the servers alone is sufficiently trusted to perform the search procedure and where there is a need to split this functionality across multiple servers to enhance security and reliability. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Accurate prediction of trends in marine pollution is strategic, given the negative effects of low water quality on human marine activities. We describe here the computational and functional performance evaluation of a decision making tool that we developed in the context of an operational workflow for food quality forecast and assessment. Our Water Community Model (WaComM) uses a particle-based Lagrangian approach relying on tridimensional marine dynamics field produced by coupled Eulerian atmosphere and ocean models. WaComM has been developed matching the hierarchical parallelization design requirements and tested in Intel X86_64 and IBM P8 multi core environments and integrated in FACE-IT Galaxy workflow. the predicted pollutant concentration and the amount of pollutants accumulated in the sampled mussels are compared in search of coherent trends to prove the correct model behaviour. In the case study shown in this paper, the predicted Lagrangian tracers, acting as pollutant concentration surrogates, tend to spread rapidly and undergo rapid dilution as expected depending on dominant water column integrated currents.

Dynamic topic models (DTMs) are very effective in discovering topics and capturing their evolution trends in time series data. To do posterior inference of DTMs, existing methods are all batch algorithms that scan the full dataset before each update of the model and make inexact variational approximations with mean-field assumptions. Due to a lack of a more scalable inference algorithm, despite the usefulness, DTMs have not captured large topic dynamics. this paper fills this research void, and presents a fast and parallelizable inference algorithm using Gibbs Sampling with Stochastic Gradient Langevin Dynamics that does not make any unwarranted assumptions. We also present a Metropolis-Hastings based O(1) sampler for topic assignments for each word token. In a distributed environment, our algorithm requires very little communication between workers during sampling (almost embarrassingly parallel) and scales up to large-scale applications. We are able to learn the largest Dynamic Topic Model to our knowledge, and learned the dynamics of 1,000 topics from 2.6 million documents in less than half an hour, and our empirical results show that our algorithm is not only orders of magnitude faster than the baselines but also achieves lower perplexity.
