Day after day, cloud technologies are more and more adopted by very diverse types of stakeholders, and this success creates a side-effect problem: the energy spent by this kind of infrastructures is growing bigger every day. With the objective of reducing energy consumption when programming applications for cloud infrastructures, we have implemented energy-aware mechanisms in the COMPSs Programming Model, inside the context of the ASCETiC Project. In this paper, we demonstrate that application-level scheduling can have a big impact on the energy consumed by an application when executed in a heterogeneous cloud. We have implemented an energy-aware scheduling mechanism in COMPSs, together with a versioning technique, and we have run experiments with a use case coming from the real estate sector that proves our hypotheses.

the diffusion of the Internet of things paradigm, in the last few years, has led to the need of deploying and managing large-scale Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), composed by a multitude of geographically distributed sensors, like the ones needed for Smart City applications. the traditional way to manage WSNs is not suitable for this type of applications, because manually managing and monitoring every single sensor would be too expensive, time consuming and error prone. Moreover, unattended sensors may suffer of several issues that progressively make their measures unreliable and consequently useless. For this reason, several automatically techniques have been studied and implemented for the detection and correction of measurements from sensors which are affected by errors caused by aging and/or drift. these methods are grouped under the name of self-calibration techniques. this paper presents a distributed system, which combines an incremental machine learning technique with a non-linear Kalman Filter estimator, which allows to automatically re-calibrate sensors leveraging the correlation with measurements made by neighbor sensors. After the description of the used model and the system implementation details, the paper describes also the proof-of-concept prototype that has been built for testing the proposed solution.

Scientific workloads often require scalable computing resources. the traditional HPC paradigm provides large scale computing resources but requires IT specialists to buy and maintain large computer infrastructure in their organization. With the emergence of cloud computing, more and more scientists and engineers are moving their computing workloads from local clusters to public cloud. However, such a migration often requires experience both in understanding cloud architecture and cloud development skills, which can impede the efficiency and success of migration. this paper presents a cloud-based parallel and distributed computing platform to support scientific computing. With the Simulation Runner, scientists only need to submit their embarrassingly parallel scientific applications with appropriate arguments or parameters. there is no need to rebuild migrate cloud applications or purchase large computer infrastructures by themselves. the system also uses a file caching mechanism to improve performance and reduce the costs of data-intensive computing tasks. A 44X speedup was resulted from using 128 computing instances compared with premise high performance desktop computers. A comparison study on the performance of file cache is given at the end of the paper.

In this paper, a droop control strategy is presented for accurate power sharing between parallel connected inverters in an AC microgrid in autonomous mode. the proposed strategy is based on the droop control techniques P-f/Q-V and P-V/Q-f, with a virtual impedance and using monitored quantities directly at the inverter. this droop control approach can be used in microgrids where communications are not reliable or not available. It allows for maintaining voltage and frequency stability and for regulating the power flows between the primary energy sources and the common AC bus. the design methodology of the control scheme under study is based on grid-supporting-grid-forming controls using multi-loop dq control. the time domain simulation is conducted, in the MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment and the RT-EVENTS toolbox from OPAL-RT is also used to model the inverters. Resulting waveforms show that the proposed method can allocate both real and reactive powers effectively and can enhance the stability of a micro-grid in the autonomous operation mode.

Existing control techniques of parallel-connected inverters are often complicated with multiple voltage and current loops. A large amount of tuning effort is required to ensure system stability, and the power quality is usually deteriorated due to voltage deviations. this paper proposes a new control method for parallel-connected three-phase voltage source inverters using model predictive control (MPC). High-quality voltages for local loads can be obtained. In addition, each inverter can adjust the output current to achieve proper load sharing according to the power ratings of distributed generation (DG) sources. Hot-swap capability is also achieved to facilitate the connection or disconnection operations to the common AC bus. Started with State-Space function which includes time-consuming matrix calculation can be done in PC. thus, control gains are found and MPC can be achieved based on a digital signal processor (DSP). the proposed method is simple without complex coordinate transformation or proportional-integral (PI) regulators. the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are verified by the test results under various scenarios, presenting promising applications in microgrids.

Droop control is the most favorable choice in wireless control of the grid-forming DGs connected in parallel. But, in microgrid applications, the dynamic characteristic of the conventional droop control is poor because the inertia is extremely low and the transmission line is relatively short. A simple output impedance parameter control method which minimizes the circulating current between grid-forming DGs in the steady-state is proposed in this paper. It also enhances power and harmonic sharing accuracy. the proposed scheme utilizes adjustable virtual output impedance instead of the reactive droop controller. the effectiveness of the proposed scheme was validated through the high-speed FPGA-based real-time simulation which runs the power circuit model every 500 ns.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a common tool to study the physical movements of atoms and molecules in many research fields. However, it is an extremely time-consuming application which takes researchers weeks or months to run a single simulation when simulation size scales up and computing demands keep growing. In this paper, an improved MD implementation on Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is developed to solve the above mentioned issues. the new implementation is extended from an existing implementation (i.e., LAMMPS) which widely uses the MD application. Sunway TaihuLight is a heterogeneous supercomputer with a fully customized integration approach and a brand new many-core processor SW26010. the Sunway TaihuLight takes the world's first place with peak performance over 100PFlops. We propose an optimization method of the MD simulation in three steps: paralleled extensions to SW26010, memory-access optimizations, and vectorization. After the optimization process, an 8x speedup is achieved on a single computing node. Superiorly, we also scale up to 95 thousands computing nodes (6 millions cores) with an almost leaner speedup. Besides, the proposed methods can also be applied to many other molecular dynamics codes, or similar applications.

E-mental health applications have gained popularity recently as a result of applying developing technologies to leverage advantages over traditional care. First, e-mental health applications are inherently scalable, whereas traditional care involves one-to-one relations between patient and clinician. Second, electronic data formats can facilitate interoperability in a way that medical data on paper cannot. third, the flexibility of a web application warrants that improvements in the care program exposed through the application will immediately benefit all applicable users. For the specific domain of e-mental health, the primary source of medical data are online questionnaires, and most applications in this domain focus on viewing, filling out, and managing these questionnaires. Many distinct such applications have been developed in recent years, most of them starting from scratch and running in isolation. In this paper, we design and propose a generic architecture for e-mental health applications from two case studies. these case studies are two e-mental health applications called HowNutsAretheDutch and Leefplezier, and are used on a large scale with over 13,000 active users combined. By abstracting functionalities into reusable Service-Oriented Architecture interfaces, we can maximize data interoperability while minimizing application-specific code to facilitate rapid development of e-mental health applications.

We study the traffic characteristics of parallel and high performance computing applications in this paper. applications that utilize multiple cores are more and more common nowadays due to the emergence of multicore processors. However the design nature of single-threaded applications and multi-threaded applications can vary significantly. Furthermore the on-chip communication profile of multicore systems should be analysed and modelled for characterization and simulation purposes. We investigate several applications running on a full system simulation environment. the on-chip communication traces are gathered and analysed. We study the detailed low-level profiles of these applications. the applications are categorized into different groups according to various parallel programming paradigms. We discover that the trace data follow different parameters of power-law model. the problem is solved by applying least-squares linear regression. We propose a generic synthetic traffic model based on the analysis results.

Improvements in memory, storage devices, and network technologies are constantly exploited by distributed systems in order to meet the increasing data storage and I/O demands of modern large-scale data analytics. Some systems use memory and SSDs as a cache for local storage while others combine local with network-attached storage to increase performance. However, no work has ever looked at all layers together in a distributed setting. We present a novel design for a distributed file system that is aware of storage media (e.g., memory, SSDs, HDDs, NAS) with different capacities and performance characteristics. the storage media are explicitly exposed to users, allowing them to choose the distribution and placement of replicas in the cluster based on their own performance and fault tolerance requirements. Meanwhile, the system offers a variety of pluggable policies for automating data management with the dual goal of increased performance and better cluster utilization. these two features combined inspire new research opportunities for data-intensive processing systems.
