Mathematical optimization algorithms are ubiquitous in computational science and engineering where the objective function of the optimization problem involves a complicated computer model predicting relevant phenomena of a scientific or engineering system of interest. therefore, in this area of mathematical software, it is indispensable to combine software for optimization with software for simulation, typically developed independently of each other by members of separate scientific communities. From a software engineering point of view, the situation becomes even more challenging when the simulation software is developed using a parallel programming paradigm without taking into consideration that it will be executed within an optimization context. the EFCOSS environment alleviates some of the problems by serving as an interfacing layer between optimization software and simulation software. In this paper, we show the software design of those parts of EFCOSS that are relevant to the integration of a simulation software involving different parallel programming paradigms. the parallel programming paradigms supported by EFCOSS include MPI for distributed memory and OpenMP for shared memory. In addition, the simulation software can be executed on a remote parallel computer.

the proliferation of data acquisition devices like 3D laser scanners had led to the burst of large-scale spatial terrain data which imposes many challenges to spatial data analysis and computation. With the advent of several emerging collaborative cloud technologies, a natural and cost-effective approach to managing such large-scale data is to store and share such datasets in a publicly hosted cloud service and process the data within the cloud itself using modern distributed computing paradigms such as MapReduce. For several key spatial data analysis and computation problems, polygon retrieval is a fundamental operation which is often computed under real-time constraints. However, existing sequential algorithms fail to meet this demand effectively given that terrain data in recent years have witnessed an unprecedented growth in both volume and rate. In this work, we develop a MapReduce-based parallel polygon retrieval algorithm which aims at minimizing the 10 and CPU loads of the map and reduce tasks during spatial data processing. the results of the preliminary experiments on a Hadoop cluster demonstrate that the proposed techniques are scalable and lead to more than 35% reduction in execution time of the polygon retrieval operation over existing distributed algorithms.

We introduce tBox system that enables protection from targeted and user-oriented attacks. Such attacks relay on users mistakes such as misinterpreting or ignoring security alerts, which leads to proliferation of malicious objects inside trusted perimeter of cyber-security systems (e.g. exclusion list of AV). these attacks include strategic web compromise, spear phishing, insider threat and social network malware. Moreover, targeted attacks often deliver zero-day malware that is made difficult to be detected, e.g. due to distributed malicious payload. the tBox system allows for protecting even a "bad" user who does not cooperate with security products. To accomplish this, tBox seamlessly transfers user activity with vulnerable applications into specific virtual environment that provides three key factors: user activity isolation, behavior self-monitoring and security inheritance for user-carried objects. To provide self monitoring, our team developed a novel technology for deep dynamic analysis of system-wide behavior, which allows for run-time recognition of malicious functionalities including obfuscated and distributed ones. We evaluate the tBox prototype with corpus of real malware families. Results show high efficiency of tBox in detecting and blocking malware while haying low system overhead.

Resource allocation problems are an important part of many distributed autonomous systems. In sensor networks, they determine which nodes get to use the communication links, in SmartGrid applications they decree which electric vehicle batteries are loaded, and in autonomous power management they select which generators produce the power required to satisfy the overall load. these cases have been considered in the literature before under the aspect of demand satisfaction: how well can distributed algorithms with local knowledge approximate the best allocation. A factor that has been ignored, however, is fairness: how fair is the resource allocation and-in extension-the distribution of revenue, wear, or recovery time. In this paper, we bring together previously disjoint approaches on dynamic distributed resource allocation and on fairness in electronic institutions. We show that fair allocations based on Ostrom's principles and on Rescher's canons of distributive justice create value in repeated resource allocations. We apply the scheme to solve the multi-objective problem of distributing load to generators fairly based on demands made by the individual generators. Our evaluation shows that a fair distribution increases satisfaction of the individual agents while reducing the hazard of optimising the problem in the short-term at the cost of long-term robustness and stability.

Wireless Sensor Networks, aiming to monitor the real world's phenomena reliably, need to combine and postprocess the detected individual events. this is not possible without reliable information of the context of the individual event. One such information of very high importance is time. It enables ordering of events as well as deduction of further data like rates and durations. An unreliable time base influences not only the ordering of events, but also the deduced values, which in consequence are unreliable as well. therefore the synchronization of the clocks of the individual nodes is of high importance to the reliability of the system. On the other hand tight and reliable synchronization typically induces a large message overhead, which is often not tolerable in WSN scenarios. this paper proposes a new hybrid synchronization mechanism enabling tight synchronization in single hop environments and looser synchronization in multi hop environments. the lack of a guaranteed synchronization precision is mitigated by an explicit synchronization uncertainty, which is passed to the application. this enables the application to react to changes in the current synchronization precision.

Background (BG) modelling is a key task in every computer vision system (CVS) independently of the final purpose for which it is designed. Even if many BG approaches exist (for example Mixture of Gaussians or Eigenbackground), they can not efficiently process real time videos due to the model complexity and to the high throughput of the video flux. One of the most challenging real time applications is the athletic scene processing, because, in this context, there are many critical aspects for defining a BG model: no a-priori knowledge of the static scene, sudden illumination changes and many moving objects that slow down the upgrade phase. the aim of this work is to provide an adaptive BG model able to deal with high frame rate videos (≥ 100 fps) in real time processing, and suitable for smart cameras embedding, finding a good compromise between the model complexity and its responsiveness. Real experiments demonstrate that this BG model approach shows great performances and robustness during the real time processing of athletic video frames, up to 100 fps. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Harvesting processes are in fact industrial manufacturing processes that follow a tight schedule. Unexpected incidents can disturb a harvest and require a replanning of the process in order to avoid severe financial losses. When a new plan has been found, it must be communicated to the affected process participants, i.e., drivers of agricultural machinery. this paper presents a cloud-based system for orchestrating and coordinating a fleet of agricultural machinery and their drivers during an ongoing harvest in case of an unexpected incident. A management dashboard allows the real-time replanning of a harvesting process and sends updated instructions to each affected driver's mobile device. the paper focuses on the communication between the contractor and a driver in the field as well as the interaction of the driver with his mobile device. It is explained how the system accomplishes a fast, traceable, and safe communication with the drivers that may suffer from bad network conditions and a high cognitive load. In order to understand the details of his new tasks, a driver can examine them in a multimodal dialogue including speech with the system. this is beneficial in a driving situation. By interacting with the mobile client, the system also deduces if the driver correctly understood his new instructions and can intervene if not.
