Egocentric action anticipation consists in predicting the future actions a camera wearer will likely perform based on past video observations. While in a real-world system it is fundamental to produce such predictions before the action begins, past works have not generally paid attention to model runtime during evaluation. Indeed, current evaluation schemes assume that predictions can be made offline, and hence that computational resources are not limited. In this paper, we propose a "streaming" evaluation protocol which explicitly considers model runtime for performance assessment, assuming that predictions will be available only after the current video segment is processed, which depends on the processing time of a method. Following the proposed evaluation scheme, we benchmark different state-of-the-art approaches for egocentric action anticipation on two popular datasets. Our analysis shows that models with a smaller runtime tend to outperform heavier models in the considered streaming scenario, thus changing the rankings observed in standard offline evaluations. Based on this observation, we propose a lightweight action anticipation model consisting in a simple feed-forward 3D CNN, which we propose to optimize using knowledge distillation techniques and a custom loss. the results show that the proposed approach outperforms prior art in the streaming scenario, also in combination with other lightweight models.

As evolving complex systems have become the central part of almost every human activity, their reliability is the key property for their successful application, especially with the emerging Internet of Services concept. there are many quantitative mathematical models, the so called reliability growth models, aiming to predict and estimate reliability of software systems based on the failure count time series. this paper suggests a novel and still unexplored qualitative approach to understand failure time series studying its topological features and their influence on failure distributions, thus affecting mission critical system properties, among which is reliability. To illustrate the new ideas, we analyse here the time series failure data of evolving software systems across the system versions for two open source software systems and one mission critical industrial software system, and discuss their topological relations and behaviour. We conclude that topological analysis might be useful for characterising software system behaviour early enough and for early characterization of system reliability that may contribute to software reliability modeling.

Subject of this analysis is to show how storage is operated optimally under renewable and load uncertainty in the electricity system context. We estimate a homogeneous Markov Chain representation of the residual load in Germany in 2014 on an hourly basis and design a very simple dynamic stochastic electricity system model with non-intermittent generation technologies and storage. We compare these results to perfect foresight findings and identify a significant over estimation of the storage potential under perfect foresight.

the increasing threat of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks targeting Smart City systems impose unprecedented challenges in terms of service availability, especially against centralized control platforms due to their single point of failure issue. the European ARTEMIS co-funded project ACCUS (Adaptive Cooperative Control in Urban (sub) systems) is focused on a centralized Integration and Coordination Platform (ICP) for urban subsystems to enable real-time collaborative applications across them and optimize their combined performance in Smart Cities. Hence, any outage of the ACCUS ICP, due to DoS attacks, can severely affect not only the interconnected subsystems but also the citizens. Consequently, it is of utmost importance for ACCUS ICP to be protected with the appropriate defense mechanisms against these attacks. Towards this direction, the measurement of the performance degradation of the attacked ICP server can be used for the selection of the most appropriate defense mechanisms. However, the suitable metrics are required to be defined. therefore, this paper models and analyzes the impact of DoS attacks on the queue management temporal performance of the ACCUS ICP server in terms of system delay by using queueing theory.

the Specification and Description Language (SDL) has been a domain specific language that is well-established in the telecommunication sector for many years, but only a small set of SDL tools is available. In contrast, a wide range of different kinds of tools can be used for various purposes, such as model transformation, for the Unified modeling Language (UML). the UML profile for SDL (SDL-UML) makes it possible to specify SDL compliant models in terms of a UML model. In this paper, the extensible SDL-UML modeling and Validation (SU-MoVal) framework, which supports the specification and validation of models that are compliant to Z.109, is presented. As an additional feature, the SU-MoVal framework also provides an editor for the specification of a textual notation that is mapped to corresponding SDL-UML elements.

Software maintenance accounts for a significant proportion of the cost of the software life cycle. Software engineers must spend a considerable amount of time understanding the software system functional attributes and non-functional (e. g., availability, security, etc.) aspects prior to performing a maintenance task. In this paper, we propose a dynamic analysis approach to recover availability requirements from system execution traces. Availability requirements are described and visualized using the Use Case Maps (UCM) language of the ITU-T User Requirements Notation (URN) standard, extended with availability annotations. Our UCM-based approach allows for capturing availability requirements at higher levels of abstraction from low-level execution traces. the resulting availability UCM models can then be analyzed to reveal system availability shortcomings. In order to illustrate and demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach, we apply it to a case study of a network implementing the HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol) redundancy protocol.

To deal with problems in traditional integration system for nuclear power valve, an integrated platform is presented by using the functional analysis and comprehensive analysis. According to the business process and business function, various function items could be customized in the system: parameterized modeling and assembly of all kinds of nuclear power valve based on UG, characteristic analysis based on ANSYS and comprehensive properties optimization analysis based on ISIGHT. the validity of the integrated design system above is verified, so the simulation of the valve can effectively improve the accuracy and efficiency of designing the valve products.

In many domains, such as avionics, oil and gas, and maritime, a common practice is to derive and execute test cases manually from requirements, where both requirements and test cases are specified in natural language (NL) by domain experts. the manual execution of test cases is largely dependent on the domain experts who wrote the test cases. the process of manual writing of requirements and test cases introduces ambiguity in their description and, in addition, test cases may not be effective since they may not be derived by systematically applying coverage criteria. In this paper, we report on a systematic approach to support automatic derivation of manually executable test cases from use cases. Both use cases and test cases are specified in restricted NLs along with carefully-defined templates implemented in a tool. We evaluate our approach with four case studies (in total having 30 use cases and 579 steps from flows of events), two of which are industrial case studies from the oil/gas and avionics domains. Results show that our tool was able to correctly process all the case studies and systematically (by following carefully-defined structure coverage criteria) generate 30 TCSs and 389 test cases. Moreover, our approach allows defining different test coverage criteria on requirements other than the one already implemented in our tool.

An accurate building energy technology portfolio evaluation approach is needed that integrates physics-based models and business case analysis. Open source, parametric building modeling tools have recently matured to enable system-level building energy analysis at high fidelities. It is observed that these modeling tools usually only analyze energy savings and are not concerned with other criteria often factored into the choice of an energy technology portfolio. this paper 'presents an approach to constructing a parametric, physics-based, building-specific, business case analysis tool for quantifying multi-criteria performance of building energy technology portfolios. the resulting environment, which is used to build up a portfolio step-by-step and analyze performance trades, is explained through a case study. the application presented is for a building energy retrofit, comparing building energy consumption before and after application of technologies from a set of contenders, but it can be extended to the design of new buildings.
