Combining a battery energy storage system (BESS) and a hydropower unit to provide primary frequency control has been researched in recent years due to the perceived benefits for both turbine and BESS operation. However, control algorithms and storage sizing recommendations for such a system remain scarcely published topics, with results derived from simulation models and lacking verification from field data. In 2019 Fortum installed a 5 MW and 6,2 MWh BESS at one of the 25 MW turbines in the Forshuvudforsen hydropower plant in Sweden. Operational data of the hybrid system providing frequency control is presented and analysed in this paper. A simple hydropower and BESS model, used in similar studies in literature, is compared to the obtained data, showing high accuracy for the hybrid system power output. this verifies that the model can be used for FCR provision design and power system studies. Although the standard hydropower unit model is not able to capture all the dynamics present in the measurements, comparison to data shows that the model is able to closely replicate the turbine wear and tear reduction and estimated BESS lifetime for hybrid operation. © Energynautics GmbH.

this study evaluates the use of close-range photogrammetry, specifically the Structure-from-Motion (SfM) technique, for assessing road surface deformations. Utilizing a low-cost GoPro Hero 10 action camera, 3D models were created for a 45-meter degraded road section, in order to calculate the volume of road surface defects. three image collection strategies were compared: only near-nadiral imagery, and near-nadiral plus one or two tracks of oblique images, respectively. Reference data was obtained from Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), in order to assess the level of accuracy for deformation volumes calculated from SfM data. the photogrammetric models, scaled and georeferenced using Ground control Points (GCPs), allowed for an accurate assessment of deformation volumes (RMSEs of 0.16-0.18 dm3 for the 32 potholes identified in the studied sector) and road surface reconstruction (with average displacements between SfM and TLS point clouds of 0.007-0.013 meters). Deformation volumes extracted from SfM 3D models of the road surface are highly correlated with reference volumes from TLS data, regardless of image collection strategy. However, using at least one track of oblique image collection leads to an accuracy improvement. Our findings confirm that close-range photogrammetry with a low-cost, easily available action camera, is an effective, cost-effective alternative for monitoring road deformations, offering high-resolution 3D models suitable for precise volume and depth measurements. However, the technique does have some limitations, mainly related to the need of GCPs in order to scale the 3D models and the significant amount of manual labour necessary in order to calculate the volume of road surface defects. Mining time-series multitemporal remote sensing is considered the key milestone in this area. In this paper, several aspects of mining time-series remote sensing databases are examined, with a focus on trend analysis and similarity search.

the design of snubber circuits for MOS-FET low power dc-dc converters are presented in this paper. Experimental evaluation is proposed for the analyses and the design procedure. the appropriate design of the snubber circuit can increase the power range, or decrease total power dissipation of the low-power dc-dc converters available as integrated circuit. the evaluation of snubber circuit is based on experimental results. Currents and voltages wave-shapes were approximated by the continuous functions. Total energy dissipation functions were determined as well. For calculation of approximation coefficients the method based on differential evolution algorithm has been used. Proposed method enables that the power transistor dissipation decrease by almost 30% in the case that the efficiency of converter not changes. Benefits, drawbacks and limits of the proposed approach are detailed and studied. Experimental results, obtained from laboratory prototype of boost converter are reported as well.

Urban Digital Twins have gained significant interest in the urban and geospatial fields, enabling interactive visualization and advanced analysis of cities across various domains. However, current implementation approaches are heterogeneous in terms of data and approaches. Furthermore, most implementations are based on specific needs. this project develops a comprehensive framework for Urban Digital Twins, focusing on data integration, storage, visualization, and analysis, all using open-source tools. Our approach integrates various data types, including 3D city models, dynamic air quality data, and external data imported from the client side, such as vector data, 3D city models, and point clouds. We conducted a series of experiments for each step and tackled various challenges. Many configurations are applied before integrating the 3D models, including ground reprojection, geometry type conversion, and format conversion. For the data storage and management, we performed several comparative tests between 3DCityDB and CJDB, which led us to choose CJDB for its simplicity and lightweight nature. A client interface built with the Giro3D framework (based on ***) connects directly to the 3D model database via a Flask server. Dynamic data is retrieved via external APIs and stored in a separate database following the Sensorthings API standard, allowing time-series analysis. Our framework is standardized and designed based on open-source software, emphasizing the openness, transferability, reusability, and maintainability of Urban Digital Twin. the City2Twin project proposes significant improvements in data analysis, highlighting the importance of having a separate database for storing static and dynamic data, as well as the importance of direct interaction between the client interface and the 3D database for data updates and management. Metaprogramming, the practice of writing programs that manipulate other programs at compile-time, continues to impact software development;enabling new approaches to optimisation, static analysis, and reflection. Nevertheless, a challenge associated with metaprogramming techniques, including C++ constexpr functionality, is an increase in compilation times. this paper presents ClangOz, a novel Clang-based research compiler that addresses this issue by evaluating annotated constant expressions in parallel, thereby reducing compilation time. By evaluating constant expressions in parallel, ClangOz significantly reduces compilation times for metaprogramming-intensive codebases, enhancing developer productivity and iterative software development processes. To control this, ClangOz includes novel compiler intrinsics allowing developers to take full advantage of constexpr language features. New i9-13900K benchmark results here demonstrate the performance advantage of ClangOz over traditional compilers, including a decrease in compile times across more benchmarks;and 100% parallel efficiency in two cases. Also introduced here is the C’est library, which provides a subset of the C++ standard library, with extended constexpr support. We highlight applications of the constexpr language feature, and emphasise the relevance of ClangOz, a compiler tailored for parallel evaluation of relevant constant expressions. Developers can now utilise modern metaprogramming, while minimising compile times parametrically. © 2024, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

this paper introduces control algorithms aimed at improving the stability of a mobile cable-driven parallel robot (MCDPR), consisting of four mobile platforms and eight cables during motion. the discussed algorithms include cable length control (CLC), addressing target cable length calculation through inverse kinematics, considering pulley influence; the tension distribution algorithm (TDA) for cable tension calculation to maintain static equilibrium at the end-effector and cable length control based on tension errors; path curvature-based localization (CBL) that estimates robot positions using curved path predictions from robot velocities and angular velocities; and index error feedback (IEF), which sustains robot formation by providing feedback on robot positions. Experimental verification was conducted using a prototype MCDPR. Results indicated that all algorithms reduced both position and tension errors. Notably, algorithms directly affecting cable control, especially CLC and TDA, had a more pronounced impact on tension errors. Failure to apply CLC, in particular, led to extremely high tensions, resulting in slip and tipping in each robot and larger position errors. these findings contribute to the advancement of MCDPR technology, enhancing its stability and reliability for various applications.

this work explores the optimization of HVAC systems in smart buildings through the integration of advanced methodologies, including machine learning algorithms. Specif-ically, we investigate the application of neural networks, and genetic algorithms to enhance energy efficiency and user comfort. through a comprehensive experimental evaluation, we validated of our proposed approach over existing optimization strategies, as evidenced by improvements in predictive accuracy, user satisfaction, and energy consumption reduction. Our findings highlight the efficacy of leveraging advanced optimization techniques in addressing the complex challenges of HVAC control in modern building infrastructures.

Training agents for autonomous driving using imitation learning seems like a promising way since its only requirement is the demonstration from expert drivers. However, causal confusion is a problem existing in imitation learning, which is that with more features offered, an agent may perform even worse. Here, we aim to augment agents’ imitation ability in driving scenarios under sequential setting, by a novel method we proposed: Sequential Masking Imitation Learning(SEMI). First, we train a Vector Quantised-Variational AutoEncoder(VQ-VAE) to encode a sequence of images into a latent representation with discrete codes. After that we deploy several masks on the encoded images, the masks here will randomly hide some semantic objects in the encoded images. Finally, we design the behavior clone network as a predictor of expert action, using an encoded and masked image sequence as input, encouraging the network to make expert-like predictions when some partition of information about the environment is missing. the masking procedure in SEMI helps the imitator identify the contribution of each encoded feature to the expert’s prediction. We demonstrate that this method could alleviate causal confusion in driving simulation by deploying it to the CARLA simulator, and compared it with other methods. Experimental results show that SEMI can effectively reduce confusion in autonomous driving. the agent trained with SEMI method reduces the collision rate by 45 % compared to methods without masking procedure, and obtain the highest average survival timesteps among competing methods. © 2024, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
