Activity representations are proposed as an extension to traditional task models. Basically, an activity representation describes fragments of knowledge about several tasks and how to interleave or merge them. Knowledge about single tasks is spread over several representations at different levels of abstraction. Lower-level models are more ephemeral and help people to organise their day-to-day activities. On the one hand, their creation is supported by more stable representations reflecting goals, activity rhythms, domain knowledge etc. On the other hand, situated action is necessary to create such (task) knowledge. We show that higher-order activity representations provide a better explanation of some task-related aspects than monolithic single task models. For example, they support re-/on-the-fly planning and contribute to dispel the belief in complete and consistent task descriptions. the paper focuses on task redefinition, task grouping and polymotivated actions, activity spaces, goal elaboration, and the interplay between habits and learning. Some conclusions for interaction design are given.

Many studies have shown that selective undo, a variant of the widely-implemented linear undo, has many advantages over the prevailing model. In this paper, we define a task model for implementing selective undo in the face of dependencies that may exist between the undone action and other subsequent user actions. Our model accounts for these dependencies by identifying other actions besides the undone one that should also be undone to keep the application in a stable state. Our approach, which we call cascading selective undo, is built upon a process-programming language originally designed in the software engineering community. the result is a formal analytical framework by which the semantics of selective undo can be represented separately from the application itself. We present our task model, the selective undo algorithm, and discuss extensions that account for differing kinds of inter-action dependencies.

Model-driven user interface development environments and their associated methodologies have evolved over time to become more explicit, flexible, and reusable but they still lack to reach a level that allows tailoring a method to the reality of software development organizations and their projects. In order to address this shortcoming, method engineering provides strategies to define and tailor software engineering methods. they should address any usability concerns, which are primordial for the integration of model-driven user interface development methods in the competitive reality of software organizations. To address the issues of explicitly defining a flexible method, we defined a strategy based on method engineering for model-driven user interface development that uses usability goals as a starting point. With the application of this strategy, we aim to help method engineers executing the method with more efficiency when defining or tailoring methods and facilitate the application of model-based user interface development methods in software organizations.

designing and exploring multimodal interaction techniques, such as those used in virtual environments, can be facilitated by using high-level notations. Besides task modelling, notations have been introduced at the dialog level such as our notation NiMMiT. For advanced interaction techniques, there is not yet an established approach to decide when to stop detailing the task model and continue modelling at the dialog level. Also, context-awareness is usually introduced at the task level and not at the dialog level. We show that this might cause an explosion in the amount of dialog states in situations where context-aware multimodal interaction is used in one and the same task. therefore, we propose an approach which attempts to introduce contextual knowledge at the dialog level where transitions are chosen upon context information. We validate our approach in a case study from which we conclude that the augmented notation is easy to use and successfully introduces context at the dialog level.

In this paper we discuss techniques on how task models can enhance visualization of the usability test log. Evaluation of the usability tests is a traditional method in user centered design. It is a part of the methodology for design of usable products. We developed a tool for visualization of usability logs that uses the hierarchical structure of the task models to group and visualize observers' annotations. this way of visualization is very natural and allows investigation of the test dynamics and comparison of participant's behavior in various parts of the test. We also describe methods of visualization of multiple logs that allow for comparison of the test results between participants. For that purpose we present a new visualization method based on alignment of the visual representations of tasks, where binding between the task model and the log visualization is used. Finally, we present an evaluation of our tool on two usability tests, which were conducted in our laboratory and we discuss observed findings.

In this paper, we describe the COMETS Inspector, a software tool providing user interface designers and developers with a semantic network in order to control the plasticity of their user interfaces (UI) at run-time. thanks to a set of predefined relationships, the semantic network links together various concepts ranging from the final UI (i.e., the UI described in terms of technological spaces) to the concrete and abstract UIs (i.e., the UI respectively described in terms of concrete interaction objects independently of any technological space, and abstract individual components and containers independently of any interaction modality) up to the tasks and concepts of the interactive system. In this way, plasticity can be addressed at four levels of abstraction (task and concepts, abstract, concrete, and final user interface) for forward, reverse, and lateral engineering. the end user exploits the semantic network at run time to adapt his/her UI to another context of use by identifying, selecting, and applying plasticity suitable operations.

Recently, industry has adopted multimodal, context-aware applications. However, addressing various modalities on heterogeneous platforms implies a demanding development effort. therefore, we present a task-centric methodology and a tool chain leveraging the development of adaptive multimodal applications. In order to improve efficiency the tool chain is based on the Model Driven Architecture approach emphasizing two key principles: model-to-model transformations and tool integration.

Emerging ubiquitous environments raise the need to support multiple interaction modalities in diverse types of devices. designing multimodal interfaces for ubiquitous environments using development tools creates challenges since target platforms support different resources and interfaces. Model-based approaches have been recognized as useful for managing the increasing complexity consequent to the many available interaction platforms. However, they have usually focused on graphical and/or vocal modalities. this paper presents a solution for enabling the development of tilt-based hand gesture and graphical modalities for mobile devices in a multimodal user interface development tool. the challenges related to developing gesture-based applications for various types of devices involving mobile devices are discussed in detail. the possible solution presented is based. on a logical description language for hand-gesture user interfaces. Such language allows us to obtain a user interface implementation on the target mobile platform. the solution is illustrated with an example application that can be accessed from both the desktop and mobile device supporting tilt-based gesture interaction.

this paper claims that the design and construction of safety critical interactive systems require both a task centred approach to support efficiently operator's goals and activities and a system centred approach to increase the dependability of the system. the approach presented proposes a model-based approach integrating tasks and system models. this integration is done at the model level (in a similar way as in [13]) and at the tool level exploiting PetShop environment [3] for the system side and AMBOSS [1] for the task side. the tool level integration describes three different protocols each of them having advantages and limitations. the model-based approaches are introduced through a case study in the field of command and control systems. the application called AGENDA allows operators to define and organize work plan for satellite ground systems.
