sensor registration is fundamental in sensor fusion. Inaccuracies in sensor location and rotation can manifest themselves into the measurements used in Multiple Target Tracking (MTT), and dramatically degrade its performance. these registration parameters are often estimated separately to any multitarget estimation, which could lead to increased computational expense, and also to systematic errors. Recent works have shown that MTT algorithms derived from Belief Propagation (BP) are computationally efficient and highly scalable for large tracking scenarios. this work presents a hierarchical Bayesian model inspired by single-cluster methods from the Random Finite Set (RFS) literature, that allow for the registration parameters to be estimated jointly with the multiple target tracking. Simulations are carried out on a multistatic radar network containing two radars with a relative range and azimuth bias between them. Results are presented for a particle-BP MTT algorithm, and it's performance is compared to that of a Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC)-Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter. the results show that the BP algorithm outperforms the PHD implementation in terms of accuracy by around 10%.

this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the Very Deep Super Resolution (VDSR) architecture, to increase the spatial resolution of lower quality images. For this aim, two sets of tests are performed. the former being on real life images to determine the networks ability to improve low resolution images. the second test is performed on images of a resolution chart, and therefore synthetic. this is to analyse the frequency response of the network. For each test, three metrics are used to assess image quality. these are the Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). Experimental results show that the VDSR network is able to increase the quality of the images within the first test in all three metrics, therefore showing that the network is suitable for super resolution. the second test provides more information on the limitations of the network when given a high contrast image, and the resulting ringing effects it can create. therefore results in PSNR/SSIM values are not improved over the low resolution images, however they have a higher MTF curve as well as more visually sharp images.

For new military aircraft a specification of sensor characteristics and performance is required at an early stage in the design cycle, well before testing of a prototype. In the early days of military aviation the Johnson criteria [1] were used to determine the sensor resolution required for target recognition by a human. In the present day sensor data are processed by computer using various Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithms. However there is no accepted method for predicting the sensor resolution and SNR required for reliable ATR and hence there is risk that any chosen sensor may fail to support the required ATR performance. this paper reports a study into the use of publicly-available CAD models for aircraft to address this requirement. the study considers the worst-case confusion between two views of 15 different aircraft types. For simplicity only rotations by an angle. about the Z (vertical) axis are considered. Firstly the sensor resolution and noise level is fixed. then for each aircraft type and view angle an ensemble of synthetic silhouettes are generated. Using these ensembles, a-posteriori distributions of 5 standard scale-invariant shape features (eccentricity, orientation, solidity, circularity and bounding box aspect ratio) are estimated for each view angle.. the performance of ATR at the given resolution and noise level is predicted by estimating the Bayes Error Rate [2] when deciding between each aircraft type and the 14 non-matching types using these features. the worst-case confusion in terms of erroneous aircraft type and view angle is identified. the sensor resolution is then changed and the above process repeated to investigate the effect of varying sensor resolution on performance. As expected, high sensor resolution leads to low probability of misclassification, even in the worst-case. Reduction in resolution and increasing noise level causes the Bayes Error Rate to rise quickly. the Bayes Error Rate gives a fundamental limit to th

In recent times, a few new low-cost sensors have been introduced to the global market for monitoring particulate matter (PM). In this paper, the performance of three such low-cost PM sensors, namely SDS011, Prana Air, and SPS30, for measuring PM2.5 and PM 10 levels is evaluated against a standard reference Aeroqual Series-500. the test setup was exposed to PM concentrations ranging from 30 μg/cm3 to 600 μ g/cm3. the results were based on 1 min, 15 min, 30 min, and 1 hr average readings. the experiments were carried out in indoor as well as outdoor environments. the comparative evaluation was performed before and after calibration. the performance of these sensors is evaluated in terms of coefficient of determination R2), coefficient of variation (Cv) and root mean square error (RMSE). Evaluation results show that these low-cost sensors have good performance after calibration with a reference sensor. © 2021 IEEE.

Heart and breath rate are fundamental vital signs used for early detection in cardiac events. In this work, a sensor based on singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) fiber structure was designed, fabricated, and tested for simultaneous measurement of heart and breath rate on a bed. A signal processing was used for obtaining the heart rate from the output signal of SMS fiber structure. In order to reduce noise in the heart rate signal, a Butterworth filter was employed. the results show that the proposed SMS fiber structure as a sensor has a relative error of 11% and 6% for measuring the heart and breath rate, respectively. the SMS fiber sensor gives a potency to measure the heart and breath rate simultaneously on a smart bed and suitable to be used in home and hospital.

In view of the serious consequences of Slamming Loads on ships at high speed, a fiber Bragg grating acceleration sensor for measuring the Slamming Loads on bows is designed in this paper. It is mainly composed of the sensor shell, the sensor shell cover, the accelerometer sensitive devices and the hinge structure, which realize the automatic monitoring of the Slamming Loads on bows. the experimental results show that the sensitivity of the sensor is 295 pm/g in the frequency range of 0–100 Hz. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

the problem of mobile sensor network location has always been a core technical problem that needs to be broken in the application of IoT. the existing location method is difficult to effectively solve the problem of the location of unknown nodes in the mobile environment. Although the Monte Carlo method is more suitable for dynamic sensor networks than other existing positioning algorithms, this algorithm still has bottleneck problems such as low positioning accuracy and low security. this paper proposes a high-security Monte Carlo positioning method based on FM signal characteristics (FM-MCL). Compared with the traditional KNN, SVM and MCL algorithms, FM-MCL significantly improves the security performance of the algorithm. the positioning accuracy of the algorithm makes the positioning accuracy still less than 20% in the environment of malicious attack. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

this paper studies the sensor geometry design problem of sky-wave time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) localization systems under non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenario where signals are reflected by ionosphere-layer before arriving at sensors. Traditionally, the optimal sensor geometries for line-of-sight (LOS) scenarios have been derived. However, ionosphere-layer heights (IHs) are generally inaccurately known. IH errors can severely degrade localization performance but the joint estimation of IHs and target location is conventionally an ill-conditioning problem. To solve this problem, we propose a grouped sensor geometry, which enables the joint estimation of IHs and target location. In this way, we improve the robustness against IH errors in sky-wave TDOA localization. theoretical analysis and performance comparison validate that the superiority of our proposed grouped sensor geometry. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper, a fiber grating stress sensor for measuring the local strength of the hull is introduced. the optical fiber stuck between the fixed plates on both sides of the sensor is deformed when the part of the hull in which the sensor is mounted is subjected to an external force, causing the wavelength of the fiber grating to change. the local intensity variation of the hull will be solved by the wavelength variation of the fiber grating. the meter shows that the deformation of the fiber grating is linear with the wavelength change of the fiber grating. To this end, the compensation algorithm of the demodulator can change the stress of the hull structure and the wavelength of the fiber grating. therefore, the sensor enables real-time monitoring of local stresses in the ship’s structure in harsh marine environments. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Aiming at the malicious attack problem in FM positioning, based on the characteristics of FM broadcast signal, a kind of FM Multiple hybrid Strategy Filtrate Localization (FMFL) is proposed: according to the current FM signal characteristics, the reasonable distance error range of each anchor node is determined, which is effective. the effect of joint attack and other methods on the performance of the positioning algorithm is reduced. At the same time, in order to improve the positioning accuracy of the algorithm more effectively, the positioning process is divided into two stages: anchor node validity verification and positioning calculation. the experimental results show that this method can obtain higher security and positioning accuracy in the presence of multiple malicious attacks. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
