Web Engineering has become an important research area, due to the unceasing growth of web sites and applications. New challenges must be faced to provide correct solutions to the problem of defining a precise process to go from requirements to a final software product of quality, all this in the context of a sound web-oriented software technology. this situation is influencing all the conventional areas of software engineering, that must be properly adapted to the particularities of Web Applications. For instance, UML-based Web Engineering, need of new mechanisms and techniques for elicitating and representing user requirements for the Web, methods for web-based development and web-based conceptual modeling, methods to evaluate the quality of web application production process and the quality of web products,… among others are issues that require solutions from both the development and the quality assurance point of view. Addressing some of these issues, this work presents the conclusions of the discussions held in the Second Edition of the International Workshop on Web-oriented Software Technology (IWWOST), held in Málaga, Spain, June 2002, as part of the european conference on object-oriented programming (ecoop). Following the tradition of previous editions, the workshop has been a rich forum of discussions, whose main results are presented structured in four main categories: UML-based web engineering, requirements engineering in the context of web applications, conceptual modeling for the web, and quality assessment for web production processes and products. Each issue is developed starting from the motivation of the problem, followed by the introduction of diverse concrete, current, potential solution to the corresponding problems together to the relevant references. In this way, an added value of this work is a complete overview on what has been already done, and what is still to be done. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

object composition arises as a natural operation to combine objects in an object-based setting. In our incomplete objects setting it has a strong meaning, as it may combine objects with different internal states. In this paper we study how to make object composition safe in the presence of width subtyping, we propose two solutions, and discuss the alternative ones.

the paper presents an approach for defining a computer language driven by a language's abstract syntax. the whole process of language specification including abstract syntax, concrete syntax and semantics definition is explained. Particular emphasis is put on language semantics definition and two approaches are introduced in detail - via annotations and aspects. For this purpose, as the main example used throughout the paper, the DESK language has been selected. A simple approach to semantics definition through semantic methods in the language model is presented. the paper continues with more advanced semantics definition through aspects. As a proof of concept, a short description of the YAJCo experimental research parser generator is given. Copyright 2010 ACM.

the article examines the methods of evolutionary software development with the use of the procedural parametric paradigm of programming. the basic program object of the paradigm are presented and their implementation in a programming language Alien is shown. the generalized records and generalizing parametric procedures are described as well as their using for the enlargement of already written a program without changing the previously written code. We consider a number of techniques that demonstrate the peculiarities of the proposed programming style. the use of generalizing procedures combined with generalized records instead of extensible types provides support for the multiple polymorphism as a special case includes a single polymorphism that is used in the objective-oriented approach. the flexibility of the proposed programming style in case of adding new data types is considered on the example of multimethods. In order to enhance the language capability it is proposed to use plug-in modules. We have carried out the analysis of the situations that arise in the software development process and compared the possibility of using evolutionary expansion in procedural, object-oriented and procedural parametric approaches. We have considered adding new specializations to the generalizations, adding new procedures, adding new data fields to existing types, adding a new procedure designed to process only one of the specialization, creating a new generalization based on the existing specializations, adding new multimethods to the program and changing multimethods. the article shows that the use of parametric generalizations combined with generalizing parametric procedures leads to the creation of more flexible evolutionary-enlargement programs. the complexity of building for generalized records is comparable with the creation of enlargement records with the use of programming language Oberon or class hierarchies of object-oriented languages. the use of plug-in modules fa

Efficient executions of object methods have a great impact on application response times. Optimising access to data returned by methods is an important issue in object-oriented programs, object-oriented and object-relational systems, as well as in distributed object environments. Since methods are written in high-level programming languages, optimising their executions is difficult. In this paper we present a technique of reducing access time to data returned by methods by means of materialising method results. We have developed a prototype system where the software module, called the method analyser and optimiser is responsible for monitoring method access and gathering execution statistics. Based on the statistics, the module selects appropriate methods for materialisation. the experiments that we have conducted show that the overall system's response time decreases while using our optimisation technique.

Visual object database browsers are essentially based on two kinds of interactions: navigation within a collection of objects, and navigation between objects by the way of their relationships. these two inter-actional operators have proven to adequately support the main user task addressed by these tools, that is, exploring the states of a set of related objects. In temporal object databases, visual browsing tools should additionally support users tasks such as examining a snapshot of a collection of objects at a given instant, or detecting changes within object states. In this paper, we show that the two interactional operators supported by classical object browsers do not adequately address these tasks. We consequently propose an interactional operator dedicated to navigation through time, and we study how it may be orthogonally integrated with the above two. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Recently, the developments in constraint languages like Prolog III may be considered as general approach for the complex scheduling problems, but only restrictive constraints are generally allowed, while humans use preference constraints more to solve them. In this paper, a novel human preference-driven scheme was suggested. the added features include dynamic object switching with the class hierarchy considered, intelligent backtracking where temporal constraint are used for deciding backup point, and case-based revisions for refining or correcting old scheduling. this scheme was implemented as human-like constraint and successfully tested for short-term lecture scheduling.

Caching and persistence support efficient, convenient and transparent distributed data sharing. the most natural model of persistence is persistence by reachability, managed automatically by a garbage collector (GC). We propose a very general model of such a system (based on distributed shared memory) and a scalable, asynchronous distributed GC algorithm. Within this model, we show sufficient and widely applicable correctness conditions for the interactions between applications, store, memory, coherence, and GC. the GC runs as a set of processes (local to each participating machine) communicating by asynchronous messages. Collection does not interfere with applications by setting locks, polluting caches, or causing I/O;this requirement raised some novel and interesting challenges which we address in this article. the algorithm is safe and five;it is not complete, i.e. it collects some distributed cycles of garbage but not necessarily all. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

We describe the design, implementation and performance of a project for constructing international fares at United Airlines. An efficient fare construction engine allows an airline to simplify, and automate the process of pricing fares in lucrative international markets. the impact of a fare engine to the revenues of a large airline has been estimated at between $20M and $60M per year. the goal is to design an efficient software system for handling 10 Gb of data pertaining to base fares from all airlines, and to generate over 250 million memory-resident records (fares). the software architecture uses a 64-bit, object- oriented, and multi-threaded approach and the hardware platforms used for benchmarking include a 24-CPU, IBM S-80 and 32-CPU, Hewlett-Packard Superdome. Two competing software designs using (i) dynamic memory and (ii) static memory are compared. Critical part of the design includes a scheduler that uses a heuristic for load balancing which is provably within a constant factor of optimality.
