In many deployments of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the primary goal is to collect and deliver data from many nodes to a data sink. this goal must be met while considering limited resources, such as battery life, in the wireless nodes. In this work, we propose considering the content of generated data to make intelligent data and node selection decisions. We formally present the problem of maximizing coverage of this collected data while restricting individual node costs to remain within a given budget and provide an algorithm that provides the optimal solution. Next we consider the related problem of finding the optimal long-term average coverage subject to average cost constraints and give its solution, which uses Lyapunov Optimization techniques. For real world implementations, we also provide computationally feasible approximation algorithms of both problems along with proven bounds on their performance, including a novel technique that uses virtual queues for the average maximum coverage problem. Finally, we provide simulation results of all proposed algorithms. these results not only demonstrate the benefits of considering data content in scheduling, but also show the advantages from using the long-term average solution and the near-optimal performance of our greedy virtual queue approximation algorithm.

Analysis of people trajectories is key for implementing effective urban computing applications. Nowadays, social media represent one of the main sources of information concerning human dynamics within urban context, allowing to enhance the comprehension of people behaviour, including human mobility regularities. the paper presents an approach to predict human mobility by exploiting Twitter data. the prediction method is based on a hybrid approach combining frequent pattern mining, trajectory similarity and supervised classification. the trajectory pattern similarity allows to identify the more suitable historic patterns to exploit for the prediction of the user next location. If none of the patterns satisfies the similarity threshold, a set of spatio-temporal features characterizing locations and movements among them are combined into a supervised learning approach based on M5 model trees. the experimental results obtained by using a real-world dataset show that the proposed method is effective in predicting the user's next places achieving a remarkable accuracy and prediction rate.

this paper presents initial results and future directions for data description and payload encodings for heterogeneous networks in IP based building intelligence systems. the efficiency of several open standards for sensor data representation are evaluated along with a consideration of the complexity of implementation and suitability for use in development of 6lowPAN based intelligent building systems. A combination of a simplified generic XML schema for data description combined with Google Protobuffer encoding is suggested as the basis for further development of the architecture as this combines simple, platform independent implementation for developers with efficient compression and payload encoding for limited bandwidth 6lowPAN networks.

this paper explores the applications of distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) electricity trading. It highlights the challenges and trade-offs of applying three different DLTs: Blockchain, Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), and Holochain. First, the study introduces the energy transition concept in the smart city context. Second, P2P electricity trading and its supporting trading mechanisms are introduced. third, DLTs are defined and three different types of DLTs are introduced. Forth, possibilities, challenges, and consequences of applying DLTs in electricity trading are explained. Last, applying DLTs for P2P electricity trading from different aspects are discussed. this paper provides a benchmark for applying DLTs to foster energy transition in smart cities. It highlights how this type of technology can serve smart circular economy.

Low-power compact sensor nodes are being increasingly used to collect trajectory data from moving objects such as wildlife. the size of this data can easily overwhelm the data storage available on these nodes. Moreover, the transmission of this extensive data over the wireless channel may prove to be difficult. the memory and energy constraints of these platforms underscores the need for lightweight online trajectory compression albeit without seriously affecting the accuracy of the mobility data. In this paper, we present a novel online Polygon Based Approximation (PBA) algorithm that uses regular polygons, the size of which is determined by the allowed spatial error, as the smallest spatial unit for approximating the raw GPS samples. PBA only stores the first GPS sample as a reference. Each subsequent point is approximated to the centre of the polygon containing the point. Furthermore, a coding scheme is proposed that encodes the relative position (distance and direction) of each polygon with respect to the preceding polygon in the trajectory. the resulting trajectory is thus a series of bit codes, that have pair-wise dependencies at the reference point. It is thus possible to easily reconstruct an approximation of the original trajectory by decoding the chain of codes starting with the first reference point. Encoding a single GPS sample is an O(1) operation, with an overall complexity of O(n). Moreover, PBA only requires the storage of two raw GPS samples in memory at any given time. the low complexity and small memory footprint of PBA make it particularly attractive for low-power sensor nodes. PBA is evaluated using GPS traces that capture the actual mobility of flying foxes in the wild. Our results demonstrate that PBA can achieve up to nine-fold memory savings as compared to Douglas-Peucker line simplification heuristic. Remote monitoring of patients with movement disorders is currently being researched extensively with the help of Wireless Body Area sensor Network (WBASN). e-Healthcare is one such popular WBASN application. We focus our research addressing an important issue of wireless monitoring of patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease (PD) for fall detection in order to avoid potential injuries. We also propose a non-invasive, wireless technique that could detect multiple occurrences of Freezing of Gait (FoG) over single or multiple days of observation. For wireless monitoring of patients, we would embed wireless sensors in patient's vicinity, such as his room and determine the values of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) from these sensors. RSSI can thus be used as one of the measures to detect falls of PD patients. Our initial results of embedding force sensors in person's shoe, suggest that it can be used to detect and record the number of occurrences of FoG, which is hard to reproduce at doctor's clinic, due to its relation with patient's consciousness at the hospital. We also propose to derive different mobility patterns for a PD patient based on the RSSI values during a day's activity and then train the system for intelligent analysis in future. © 2013 ieee.

this paper performs an analysis on emergent peerto-peer (p2p) electricity trading markets utilizing the resourcebased theory based on the sharing economy concept to identify possible opportunities for assets/data sharing amongst existing and emerging market players. First, the study introduces actors in the future electricity market and identifies their objectives. Second, valuable resources of each actor are recognized and categorized under physical and digital groups. third, interested actors in each resource and benefits they can gain by having access to the resource are discussed. Last, a matrix of sharing opportunities amongst the actors in the electricity market is built and the current state of sharing is compared with the possibilities in the future. this paper provides and serves as a benchmark for implementing the sharing economy concept in future design of electricity markets. It highlights sharing opportunities as a means for circular economy in the electricity market. Implementing the identified sharing opportunities requires more collaborative (open) business models.

In this article, we develop a comprehensive framework to characterize the performance of a drone assisted backscatter communication-based Internet of things (IoT) sensor network. We consider a scenario where the drone transmits an RF carrier that is modulated by IoT sensor node (SN) to transmit its data. the SN implements load modulation which results in amplitude shift keying (ASK) type modulation for the impinging R F carrier. In order to quantify the performance of the considered network, we characterize the coverage probability for the ground based SN node. the statistical framework developed to quantify the coverage probability explicitly accommodates a dyadic backscatter channel which experiences deeper fades than that of the one-way Rayleigh channel. Our model also incorporates Line of Sight (LoS) and Non-LoS (NLoS) propagation states for accurately modelling large-scale path- loss between drone and SN. We consider spatially distributed SNs which can be modelled using a spatial Binomial Point Process (BPP). We practically implement the proposed system using Software Defined Radio (SDR) and a custom designed SN tag. the measurements of parameters such as noise figure, tag reflection coefficient etc., are used to parametrize the developed framework. Lastly, we demonstrate that there exists an optimal set of parameters which maximizes the coverage probability for the SN.

the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile communications together with software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are expected to enable a wide range of vertical use-cases. Different vertical industries with diverse service streams and sets of requirements should leverage the advanced capabilities of 5G networks through a single infrastructure to support the desired Quality of Service/Experience (QoS/QoE). In this paper, we focus on the Transport vertical and we study four novel service categories, each one consisting of one or more related scenarios, within the framework of the 5G Health, Aquaculture and Transport (5G-HEART) 5G PPP Phase 3 project. the first pass analysis of the envisioned vehicular services and their underlying operation, combined with the mapping of the mostly high-level functional user requirements to quantitative network Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) via a thorough and concise methodology, is essential for future testing with real pilots. Furthermore, our work paves the way towards efficient network slicing by exploring the interrelations between the identified KPIs and the respective target values that must be simultaneously satisfied over the same physical network infrastructure, in the context of the three 5G generic services.

Network diagnosis is crucial in managing a wireless sensor network (WSN) since many network-related faults, such as node and link failures, can easily happen. Diagnosis tools usually consist of two key components, information collection and root-cause deduction, while in most cases information collection process is independent with root-cause deduction. this results in either redundant information which might pose high communication burden on WSNs, or incomplete information for root-cause inference that leads false judgments. To address the issue, we propose DID, a directional diagnosis approach, in which the diagnosis information acquirement is guided by the fault inference process. through several rounds of incremental information probing and fault reasoning, root causes of the network abnormalities with high credibility are deduced. We employ a node tracing scheme to reconstruct the topical topology of faulty regions and build the inference model accordingly. We implement the DID approach in our forest monitoring sensor network system, GreenOrbs. Experimental results validate the scalability and effectiveness of this design.
