Recently, distributed adaptive algorithms have been proposed to solve the problem of estimation over distributed networks. In a diffusion protocol, each node in the network function as an individual adaptive filter whose aim is to estimate the parameter of interest through local observations. All the estimates obtained from the nodes are then locally fused with their neighboring estimates in the network. the aim of this work is to improve the signal processing capability of the distributed network in a novel way by applying the diffusion normalized least mean squares (epsilon-NLMS) algorithm. the simulation results will show that the diffusion epsilon-NLMS algorithm outperforms its counterpart the diffusion least mean squares (LMS) algorithm for slowly changing environment, where data are expected to show high correlation.

the concept presented in this paper if focused on a special type of an energy efficient RFID tag, which is suitable also for non-RFID applications, such as low power intelligent networks, sensor applications, cooperative WSN (Wireless sensor Network), systems for the intelligent household, etc. the highest attention is put on the antenna system, which uses the technology of an adaptive beam forming. One of the goals of this paper is an evaluation of the suitability of the proposed concept and of the whole approach, considering its practical realization.

Minimizing the energy consumption of battery-powered sensors is an essential consideration in sensor network applications like coverage, and sleep/wake scheduling mechanism has been proved to an efficient approach to handling this issue. Nevertheless, the frequent switching between states, during scheduling, leads also to significant energy consumption. In this article, a coverage-guaranteed distributed sleep/wake scheduling scheme is presented with the purpose of prolonging network lifetime while guaranteeing network coverage. Our scheme mitigates scheduling process to be more stable by avoiding useless transitions between states without affecting the coverage level required by the application. the simulation results illustrate that out scheme outperforms some other existed algorithms in terms of coverage guarantee, energy conservation and stability.

Ambient intelligence (AmI) systems are smart interactive systems that perceive their surroundings using sensors and act upon them using actuators. One of the most common applications of such systems is Smart Homes. In this context, the ambient system can offer a great level of dependability if it is able to exploit available sensor data in order to autonomously perform diagnosis. However, ambient environments are dynamic in a sense that components, in general, and actuators and sensors, in particular, can be added or removed from the system at run-time. this dynamicity raises new challenges not addressed in the state of the art of fault detection and diagnosis techniques. Unlike classical control theory methods, control-loops between ambient system components cannot be pre-determined at design time. In this paper we propose a new approach based on the modeling of physical phenomena, allowing one to use available resources to predict the values that are supposed to be read by sensors. Comparing the predictions and the real readings allows us to detect potential faults. Fault detection may be followed by fault isolation, which tries to identify the faulty component precisely.

the modern distributed systems introduce new constraints. therefore, there are subject to different types of faults. A running application should proceed normally and especially end to achieve its goals despite the presence of faults. Hence, the fault tolerance is very important in this context. Among the fault tolerance techniques, we consider in this study, the checkpointing based recovery by proposing a new hybrid checkpointing protocol for MANETs.

Ensuring area coverage is one of the key requirements of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). When nodes are randomly placed in the area of interest, redundancy is often provisioned in order to lower the probability of having voids, where part of the area is not within the detection range of any sensor. To extend the lifetime of the network, a duty cycle mechanism is often applied in which only a subset of the nodes are activated at a certain time while the other nodes switch to low-power mode. the set of active nodes are changed over time in order to balance the load on the individual sensors. the selection of active nodes is subject to meeting the coverage requirement. Assessing the coverage of a sensor is based on knowing its position. However, localization schemes usually yield a margin of errors which diminishes the coverage fidelity. Conservative approaches for mitigating the position inaccuracy assume the worst-case error across the network and end up activating excessive number of nodes and reduces the network lifetime. In this paper, we present an approach for estimating a bound on the maximum error for the position of each sensor and propose a distributed algorithm for achieving high fidelity coverage while engaging only a subset of the sensors. the simulation results confirm the performance advantages of our approach.

the performance of an industrial process is strongly dependent on available sensor measurements. Inaccurate measurements resulting from insufficient measurements or improper sensor placement can significantly deteriorate fault observability and process control. However, the performance of a diagnostic system highly depends on the number and location of sensors. An optimized design of sensors and strategy of sensors placement will be proposed to enhance safety of industrial systems. the objective of this paper is to provide a new method based on structural analysis approach that is able to help sensor placement in the model. the problem under study is known to be a combinatorial problem. Our algorithmic contribution is a combinatorial optimization solution which improves, through a tripartite graph research, the global execution time comparing to classical bipartite graph.

the evolution of mobile technologies allows the emerging of ubiquitous systems, able to anticipate user needs and to seamlessly adapt to context changes. these systems present the problem of dynamic adaptation in a highly distributed, heterogeneous and volatile environment, since it may be difficult to collect and process context information from distributed unknown sources. In order to facilitate the development of such systems, this paper extends an existing coordination framework based on tuple spaces, aiming at the management of distributed information. Hence, a decentralized coordination framework was created, offering primitives to developers to create ubiquitous systems able to interact and cooperate in scenarios of total decentralization. this paper reports some experimental results obtained in a testbed of smartphones and tablets which demonstrate the practical feasibility of our approach and pointed out how our solution can grant context data dissemination in ad hoc and infrastructured networks.

distributed average consensus (DAC) algorithm is widely used in many applications. It utilizes matrix iteration to find the dominant eigenvector. To minimize the required number of iterations, the algorithm needs to be optimized. However, this optimization needs the knowledge of network topology, which is very hard to obtain for an individual agent in distributed networks. thus, optimal step length and forgetting factor need to be calculated offline and forwarded to every agent. To solve this problem, we proposed a distributed real-time optimization technique so that each node can estimate these optimal parameters individually. In addition, the method is based on constant first-order DAC itself, so it will not stop the consensus process. the result shows that a numerical error due to quantization would exist in the distributed solution. It will increase as the network becomes larger. thus, a numerical technique is introduced to mitigate the error. the estimated parameters after mitigation do not obviously decline the performance of higher-order DAC when network size is smaller than a threshold.

Constant monitoring of patients without disturbing their daily activities can be achieved through mobile networks. sensor nodes distributed in a home environment to provide home assistance gives concept of Wireless Wearable Body Area Networks. Gathering useful information and its transmission to the required destination may face several problems. In this paper we figure out different issues and discuss their possible solutions in order to obtain an optimized infrastructure for the care of elderly people. Different channel models along with their characteristics, noise filtering in different equalization techniques, energy consumption and effect of different impairments have been discussed in our paper. the novelty of this work is that we highlighted multiple issues along with their possible solutions that a BAN infrastructure is still facing.
