Hybrid Automatic Retransmission reQuest (HARQ) is an effective technique to improve the reliability of wireless communication systems by detecting, correcting, and retransmitting the erroneous packets. Packet-level error sequences obtained from physical layer wireless communication systems are important for the design and performance evaluation of high layer protocols, e.g., HARQ. In this paper, we utilize the open source Vienna long-term evolution (LTE) simulator to study the impact of HARQ on the burst error statistics of packet-level error sequences. Moreover, we propose a generative model that can generate packet-level error sequences with predicted burst error statistics similar to those of error sequences obtained from wireless systems with HARQ. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed generative model is accurate and efficient in predicting the behavior of HARQ in terms of a set of burst error statistics rather than predicting the packet error rate (PER) only.

Todays situation is characterized by an increasing pervasiveness of a plethora of mobile devices featuring different capabilities and exhibiting different system interfaces making the handling of these devices and especially the cooperation between different devices a complex task. In this paper, we consider the sum of all these devices as one emerging system (the swarm) and present an approach of a swarm operating system that on a systemic level manages these devices (local devices give up their autonomy) while providing a common interface to user applications. We provide a programming model for distributed mobile applications that abstracts from error-prone aspects such as distribution and concurrency by giving the programmer a systemic view to system resources. the model allows the programmer to define actions that can be restricted in space and time. Together with a high level goal, an entire application emerges implicitly based on those defined actions. In order to execute such applications, we present an architecture for a runtime system that uses virtualization techniques in order to execute multiple independently developed applications in parallel. the system follows a service-oriented architecture: one of the core services is the space-time scheduler that plans applications (a set of actions) in time and space.

In this paper we propose a distributed, low-power, self-organizing MAC scheme for low-power wireless sensor and control applications. In such applications, nearly periodic traffic needs to be handled so that the communication delays are minimized and the transmission is as predictable as possible. We propose Asynchronous Random Schedules with Collision Forecast (ARS/CF) for this purpose, together with a multichannel extension based on an improved modulation scheme to improve capacity scaling of the basic ARS/CF scheme. We analyze and simulate the basic single-hop ARS/CF implementation with regard to throughput and delay when used both in single- and multi-channel settings. Finally, we consider the implementation of ARS/CF in a multi-hop setting.

User localization is the key to enable many location-based services. Localization techniques have been actively studied recently due to service as well as safety and security matters. there are many localization systems with different architectures, configurations, accuracies and reliabilities. However, no technique is now generally applicable for indoor environments. In this paper, a probabilistic propagation model of WiFi signals in an environment with walls/floors, and its application to a localization technique using WiFi signal strength, are introduced. A small program installed on the smart device regularly scans the signal strengths to surrounding WiFi access points and send information to a central server to calculate the position. the user location is achieved in 3D space by a robust hybrid method which is based on the probabilistic propagation model and takes the advantages from both well-known geometrical-calculation and finger-printing approaches: low site-survey cost and robustness. the parameters are tuned by using a genetic algorithm from easily collected data.

Fairshare scheduling is an established technique to provide user-level differentiation in management of capacity consumption in high-performance and grid computing scheduler systems. In this paper we extend on a state-of-the-art approach to decentralized grid fairs hare and propose a generalized model for construction of decentralized prioritization-based management systems. the approach is based on (re)formulation of control problems as prioritization problems, and a proposed framework for computationally efficient decentralized priority calculation. the model is presented along with a discussion of application of decentralized management systems in distributedcomputing environments that outlines selected use cases and illustrates key trade-off behaviors of the proposed model.
