In this paper, we study the integration between Compressed Sensing (CS) and clustering methods in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) that significantly reduce power consumption for the networks. In theory, a base station (BS) needs to collect M measurements from the network with N sensors, then applies CS to obtain precisely all N sensor readings. In clustered networks, a cluster-head (CH) collects data from non-CH sensors in its cluster, adds all received and its own data and then sends the combined measurement to the BS. We further analyze the clustered network with the measurement matrix created by clustering methods, and formulate the total power consumption. Finally, we suggest the optimal number of clusters for the networks to consume the least power in practice.

Data reduction strategy is one of the schemes employed to extend network lifetime. In this paper we present an implementation of a light-weight forecasting algorithm for sensed data which saves packet transmission in the network. the proposed Naive algorithm achieves high energy savings with a limited computational overhead on a node. Simulation results from realistic Building monitoring application of WSN are compared with well-known prediction algorithms such as ARIMA, LMS and WMA models. We implemented a real-world deployment using 32bit mote-class device. Overall, up to 96% transmission reduction is achieved using our Naive method, while still able to maintain a considerable level of accuracy at 0.5 degrees C error bound and it is comparable in performance to the more complex models such as ARIMA, LMS and WMA.

Wireless sensor networks are increasingly used in application scenarios where a high data quality is inevitable, e.g., the control of industrial production areas. Nevertheless, many deployments must live with strict constraints regarding the sensing hardware and may not employ newest sensing technologies, e.g., due to limited energy budget, size, and bandwidth. Additionally, many applications would benefit from not only gathering absolute sensor readings but also knowing the quality of their low-cost sensor measurements. In this paper, we introduce a model-driven approach that (i) provides reliable accuracy bounds for individual noisy sensor readings and (ii) detects systematic and transient sensor errors. We apply our method to static and mobile real-world deployments of noisy and unstable low-cost sensors by analyzing large sets of urban temperature and ozone measurements. We find that the proposed algorithm successfully calculates precise accuracy bounds. We compare them to measurements of high-quality instruments and show that up to 96% of the reference measurements are inside the computed accuracy bounds in the static scenario and up to 94% in the mobile scenario. this is surprisingly high for the used low-cost sensors. By analyzing data from our static long-term deployment, we reveal that the ozone sensor's reliability is dependent on seasonal weather conditions.

As larger numbers of Wireless sensor Network (WSN) applications get deployed in our homes and offices, it is desirable to use the same network to run different applications. We present and analyze the problem of scheduling and supporting the execution of multiple heterogeneous applications on top of the same WSN. First, we establish that using the same MAC or network protocol is not sufficient to obtain acceptable performance across a set of applications that require different types of communication services from the protocol stack (e.g., low-rate reliable many-to-one collection vs point-to-point low-latency bulk-data streaming). Hence, we propose a framework to dynamically reconfigure the WSN and adapt its power consumption, transmission reliability, and data throughput to the different requirements of the applications. the framework makes it possible to specify, at design time, distinct network, MAC and radio protocols for each application as well as the events and policies triggering the WSN reconfigurations. At run-time, the WSN automatically reconfigures itself in response to these events and according to these policies. through experiments on a 119-node testbed, we show that the proposed approach can reconfigure the whole network in few hundreds of milliseconds while incurring little memory and control overhead.

Wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) applications are used in many critical scenarios. For instance, upon receiving an over-threshold pressure value, the control station of a gas separation plant issues a command to corresponding actuators to close gas valves to prevent a fire accident. In such control-loop systems, messages must be transported reliably within a tight deadline. this paper presents two components: a new network dimensioning method and a simple MAC protocol, to support control-loop systems in WSANs. the dimensioning method is used to specify the worst-case network topology, traffic and node forwarding rates prior to a network deployment. the MAC protocol is designed to ensure that the specifications and design assumptions are not violated in a subsequent deployment. the experimental evaluation clearly indicates that messages are delivered within the guaranteed delay bound.

Enabling visual sensor networks to perform visual analysis tasks in real-time is challenging due to the computational complexity of detecting and extracting visual features. A promising approach to address this challenge is to distribute the detection and the extraction of local features among the sensor nodes, in which case the time to complete the visual analysis of an image is a function of the number of features found and of the distribution of the features in the image. In this paper we formulate the minimization of the time needed to complete the distributed visual analysis for a video sequence subject to a mean average precision requirement as a stochastic optimization problem. We propose a solution based on two composite predictors that reconstruct randomly missing data, and use a quantile-based linear approximation of the feature distribution and time series analysis methods. the composite predictors allow us to compute an approximate optimal solution through linear programming. We use two surveillance videos to evaluate the proposed algorithms, and show that prediction is essential for controlling the completion time. the results show that the last value predictor together with regular quantile-based distribution approximation provide a low complexity solution with very good performance.

We revisit the classic object tracking problem with a novel and effective, yet straightforward distributed solution for resource-lean devices. the difficulty of object tracking lies in the mismatch between the limited computational capacity of typical sensor nodes and the processing requirements of typical tracking algorithms. In this paper, we introduce an in-network system for tracking mobile objects using resource-lean sensors. the system is based on a distributed, dynamically-scoped tracking algorithm which alters the event detection region and reporting rate based on object speed. A leader node records the detected samples across the event region and estimates the object's location in situ. We study the performance of our tracking implementation on an 80-node testbed. the results show that it achieves high performance, even for very fast objects, and is readily implemented on resource-lean sensors. While the area is well-studied, the unique combination of algorithmic features represents a significant addition to the literature.

Indoor air quality is important. It influences human productivity and health. Personal pollution exposure can be measured using stationary or mobile sensor networks, but each of these approaches has drawbacks. Stationary sensor network accuracy suffers because it is difficult to place a sensor in every location people might visit. In mobile sensor networks, accuracy and drift resistance are generally sacrificed for the sake of mobility and economy. We propose a hybrid sensor network architecture, which contains both stationary sensors (for accurate readings and calibration) and mobile sensors (for coverage). Our technique uses indoor pollutant concentration prediction models to determine the structure of the hybrid sensor network. In this work, we have (1) developed a predictive model for pollutant concentration that minimizes prediction error;(2) developed algorithms for hybrid sensor network construction;and (3) deployed a sensor network to gather data on the airflow in a building, which are later used to evaluate the prediction model and hybrid sensor network synthesis algorithm. Our modeling technique reduces sensor network error by 40.4% on average relative to a technique that does not explicitly consider the inaccuracies of individual sensors. Our hybrid sensor network synthesis technique improves personal exposure measurement accuracy by 35.8% on average compared with a stationary sensor network architecture.

Topology Control Protocols configure transmission power of nodes in order to achieve specific properties to a given topology. these properties include the creation and maintenance of neighborhoods or other topological entities (like trees or clusters), load balancing in terms of connectivity degrees and provision of link symmetry. We see topology control as a two-fold problem where topological properties can also be affected by local network throughput. We propose SCLD-A2TP, a protocol that operates in a two phase adaptive scheme. First transmission power is adaptively adjusted with low throughput settings and nodes achieve a sufficient degree of symmetric and coherent links. Secondly throughput is maximized insofar as the degree is maintained. We assess various distributed heuristics for SCLD-A2TP via testbed experiments and show that up to an extend, link quality and symmetry as well as degree conformity of links can be regulated successfully by transmission power and adaptive throughput control.

Application communication in wireless sensor networks (WSN) depends on two important factors: acquisition of sensed data from a specific area, and network connectivity that concerns the reliable delivery of the observed data from sensor nodes to the sink node. In this paper, we consider the application communication reliability (ACR) of WSN supporting K-coverage in the presence of shadowing for a specific monitored area. the analytical evaluation of ACR involves two steps. We first identify all the K-coverage sets. then, we evaluate the communication reliability of delivering the observed data from sensor nodes within the identified K-coverage sets to the sink node. Two single-path routing algorithms, shortest-path distance algorithm and shortest-path hop algorithm, are considered for evaluating the communication reliability during the second step;their performances in terms of ACR and energy consumptions are compared through an empirical analysis of several examples. Different scenarios are considered to evaluate the impact of node density, channel condition and different monitored areas on ACR. Simulation and analytical results show that WSN using the shortest-path distance algorithm is more reliable than that using the shortest-path hop algorithm in most cases, but WSN using the shortest-path hop algorithm consumes less energy for delivering the sensed data to the sink node.
