the energy efficiency becomes one of the most important concerns in mobile electronic systems design with mandatory requirements for low energy consumption, long battery life and low heat dissipation. Dynamic Power Management (DPM) and Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS or DVS) are two widely applied system level techniques to conserve system-wide power consumption. In the context of hard real-time systems, however, DPM and DVS have to be used with great caution in terms of timing constraints. In this article, we study the combined application of DPM and DVS for component oriented systems with hard real-time tasks and propose a simulated annealing based optimization algorithm and its online execution with constant complexity at each scheduling point. Additionally, our approach considers multiple low power states (sleep states) with non-negligible switching overhead. the experimental results show that our approach can achieve almost an optimal solution. © 2012 ieee.

Complex real-time software systems require an active fault management capability. While testing, verification and validation schemes and their constant evolution help improve the dependability of these systems, an active fault management strategy is essential to potentially mitigate the unacceptable behaviors at run-time. In our work we have applied the experience gained from the field of Systems Health Management towards component-based software systems. the software components interact via well-defined concurrency patterns and are executed on a real-time component framework built upon ARINC-653 platform services. In this paper, we present the lessons learned in architecting and applying a two-level health management strategy to assemblies of software components. © 2012 ieee.

In developing multi-UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) system, a simulation environment is essential to verify the functionalities of the whole system with higher productivity and reduced risks of accidents. Simulations of multi-UAV systems are usually accomplished by using distributed systems where multiple standalone simulators are connected via a network. thus, in order to achieve an improved reality in such distributed simulation environments, the whole multi-UAV simulator should be guaranteed real-time and synchronized behaviors among the connected systems. In this paper, we discuss about the necessity of two important real-time features, i.e., the periodicity of computations and the clock synchronization among standalone simulators. We also propose an architecture based on TMO(time-triggered and Message-triggered object) model as a multi-UAV simulation platform with our preliminary experimental results showing its potential feasibilities. © 2010 ieee.

A middleware model named ROAFTS (real-time object-oriented Adaptive Fault Tolerance Support) has been evolving in the UCI DREAM Lab. over the past decade as the core of a reliable execution engine model for fault-tolerant (FT) real-time (RT) distributed computing (DC) applications. It is meant to be an integration of various mechanisms for fault detection and recovery in a form that meshes well with high-level RT DC object/component-based programming, in particular, TMO (time-triggered Message-triggered object) programming. Using ROAFTS as a backbone and low-layer middleware, we developed a model and a skeleton implementation for FT DC middleware providing efficient FT execution services for component-based home network applications. Capabilities for management of home information processing devices, including health monitoring of home devices, reconfiguration of device connections, and servicing queries on device status, were added to ROAFTS. those additions were first designed as a network of high-level RT DC components, i.e., TMOs. then the TMO network was extended into an FT TMO network by applying the replication scheme called the PSTR (Primary-Shadow TMO Replication) scheme and incorporating a component responsible for reconfiguring TMO replicas. this extension of ROAFTS is called ROAFTS-HNE (Home Network Extension) and its architecture is presented here. In addition, during the development of the ROAFTS-HNE model, we formulated a new approach for applying the PSTR scheme to RT DC components supported by ROAFTS. Finally, evaluations of the recovery times of a prototype implementation have been conducted.

distributed real-time automotive embedded systems have to be highly dependable as well as cost-efficient due to the large number of manufactured units. To close the gap between raising complexity and cutting costs, upcoming software standards like AUTOSAR introduce a clear separation of concerns into their system architecture. An AUTOSAR application is built from components that deal with business logic only whereas infrastructural services are provided by standardized middleware. Unfortunately, this middleware tends to be heavy-weight due to its coarse-grained layered design. By applying a component based design to AUTOSAR's middleware, a custom-tailored version for each specific application and system node can be built to overcome this problem. this paper demonstrates how to automatically synthesize component based middleware via the Connector Transformation: component connectors in platform independent application models are utilized to automatically assemble platform- and application specific middleware. As a result, AUTOSAR middleware becomes custom-tailored and hence light-weight and flexible. In addition, the described synthesis algorithm is capable of incorporating timing annotations via interface contracts at model level, and thus reflects upcoming ambitions to cover real-time constraints at middleware level within AUTOSAR. To prove our approach we successfully synthesized middleware for a demonstrator application and compared it to its conventional counterpart.

this paper addresses the problem of measuring time in object-oriented event-driven real-time systems. Several possible implementations of the timing subsystem are considered. Some important consequences that an implementation can have on the overall time overhead are discussed. the paper proposes a modified multiple-rate policy of updating software timers. Timing ticks are distributed through a tree structure in a way that tends to minimize the overall overhead, while retaining a small variation of the overhead in different clock cycles. the paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the described models. the analysis considers different exploitation conditions, in respect to the number of software timers and their resolutions.

the complexity of software in systems like aerospace vehicles has reached the point where new techniques are needed to ensure system dependability while improving the productivity of developers. One possible approach is to use precisely defined software execution platforms that (1) enable the system to be composed from separate components, (2) restrict component interactions and prevent fault propagation, and (3) whose compositional properties are well-known. In this paper we describe the initial steps towards building a platform that combines component-based software construction with hard real-time operating system services. Specifically, the paper discusses how the CORBA component Model (CCM) could be combined with the ARINC-653 platform services and the lessons learned from this experiment. the results point towards both extending the CCM as well as revising the ARINC-653. © 2010 ieee.

Knowledge is the source of intelligence and both knowledge representation and knowledge management are crucial for intelligent systems. Well employed knowledge helps such systems become aware of situations, recognize states and eventually respond to changes. this paper presents our vision of knowledge representation and awareness in mobile swarm systems formed as open-ended ensembles of special autonomic components. Such components encapsulate rules, constraints and mechanisms for self-management and acquire and process knowledge about themselves, other service components and their environment. In this paper, we present our approach to high-level model of structured knowledge and a formal model of awareness in such autonomic service-component ensembles. © 2011 ieee.

A flight-tested product line open system software architecture developed under the Boeing Bold Stroke initiative has been previously described and presented [1]. this architecture enables a reusable component-based development process for avionics systems to achieve product goals of improved affordability, quality, and system timeliness. For large-scale systems, one very challenging portion of this process is the integration of common and project specific software components into systems that respect cross-cutting embedded system requirements such as hard and soft real-time deadlines, fault tolerance, and distribution. Significant advances in current approaches would result from an integrated approach to explicit modeling of functional behaviors and coupled physical embedded system properties, analysis of these models to ensure that they meet requirements prior to coding, and automated component configuration code generation. How these challenges, requirements and end-state visions for avionics systems are being developed within the DARPA Model-Based Integration of Embedded Software (MoBIES) program has also been previously described and presented [2]. this presentation will expand on those initial experiment descriptions by delineating the experimental process that was used, by providing examples of the MoBIES-enabled development process in practice, the role of domain-specific models, and by presenting initial qualitative and quantitative results.

Adaptation to changing environmental conditions is a major challenge for most distributed applications. the service-oriented programming paradigm leads to an increasing number of applications that are not only meant to provide services through standard user-interfaces hosted on desktop computers, but are to be accessible from small mobile devices as well. the integration of the different programming environments on desktop (i.e.;Windows) and mobile computers (i.e.;Java Micro Editions - J2ME) puts an extra burden on the programmer of this kind of applications. In addition, unstable conditions caused by modem infrastructures for mobile applications and varying properties of computational devices have to be considered during run-time of the application. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism for adaptive computing. Within this paper, we elaborate on the extension of our previously developed Adaptive .Net framework towards CORBA and Java. With the introduction of new connector types, our framework is able to provide seamless support for adaptive, heterogeneous applications based on .NET Java, and CORBA. In context of our framework, applications consist of components which interact via so-called connectors. the component/connector model allows for mediating between component frameworks (Java, NET) as well as between communication protocols (CORBA, NET Remoting, sockets, etc.). Within the paper we give an overview of our adaptation framework Adaptive .NET, that includes a monitoring infrastructure, a reconfiguration platform and tools for building adaptive applications. Using a proof-of-concept application, we experimentally evaluate our connector architecture and study interoperability of Java, CORBA, and .NET objects.
