Adaptation to changing environmental conditions is a major challenge for most distributed applications. the service-oriented programming paradigm leads to an increasing number of applications that are not only meant to provide services through standard user-interfaces hosted on desktop computers, but are to be accessible from small mobile devices as well. the integration of the different programming environments on desktop (i.e.;Windows) and mobile computers (i.e.;Java Micro Editions - J2ME) puts an extra burden on the programmer of this kind of applications. In addition, unstable conditions caused by modem infrastructures for mobile applications and varying properties of computational devices have to be considered during run-time of the application. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism for adaptive computing. Within this paper, we elaborate on the extension of our previously developed Adaptive .Net framework towards CORBA and Java. With the introduction of new connector types, our framework is able to provide seamless support for adaptive, heterogeneous applications based on .NET Java, and CORBA. In context of our framework, applications consist of components which interact via so-called connectors. the component/connector model allows for mediating between component frameworks (Java, NET) as well as between communication protocols (CORBA, NET Remoting, sockets, etc.). Within the paper we give an overview of our adaptation framework Adaptive .NET, that includes a monitoring infrastructure, a reconfiguration platform and tools for building adaptive applications. Using a proof-of-concept application, we experimentally evaluate our connector architecture and study interoperability of Java, CORBA, and .NET objects.

Service-orientation has been proposed as a way of facilitating the development and integration of increasingly complex and heterogeneous system components. However, there are many new challenges to the dependability community in this new paradigm, such as how individual channels within fault-tolerant systems may invoke common services as part of their workflow, thus increasing the potential for common-mode failure. We propose a scheme that - for the first time - links the technique of provenance with that of multi-version fault tolerance. We implement a large test system and perform experiments with a single-version system, a traditional MVD system, and a provenance-aware MVD system, and compare their results. We show that for this experiment, our provenance-aware scheme results in a much more dependable system than either of the other systems tested, whilst imposing a negligible timing overhead.

Divide-and-conquer approaches to worst-case execution-time analysis (war analysis) pose a safety risk when applied to code for complex modern processors: interferences between the hardware acceleration mechanisms of these processors lead to timing anomalies, i.e., a local timing change causes an either larger or inverse change of the global timing. this phenomenon may result in dangerous WCET underestimation. this paper presents results of our work on strategies for eliminating timing anomalies. these strategies are purely based on the modification of software, i.e., they do not require any changes to hardware. In order to eliminate the timing anomalies originating from the processor's out-of-order instruction pipeline, we explore different methods of inserting instructions in the program code that eliminate all but one alternative schedules for the dynamic instruction scheduler. We also present a software-only way to force predictability for a two bit saturating counter branch predictor.

the paper deals with providing a specification methodology to enable flexible monitoring in large scale distributed information systems (DIS). the goal is to allow the monitoring of compliance to properties deemed as critical for functioning of a DIS. Since information attacks due to external intrusion and/or component failures often manifest as deviations from critical behaviors expected of a DIS, a violation of compliance to a specified critical property can be viewed as symptomatic of information attacks. Based on this principle, users can prescribe critical properties in the form of event predicates, which are boolean conditions on the externally visible interface state distributed among computation nodes and can be detected by distributed algorithms. Our specification methodology manifests in two facets: i) designing a meta-language which allows the interface behavior of a system to be prescribed through possible occurrences of events in the external environment;and ii) incorporating the specification language into a programming interface that exposes the computation-level states symbolizing the occurrence of events. Any target application can then plugged-in to the generic monitor tool to test for its compliance to critical functionality requirements. the realization of monitor in distributed object-oriented programming languages (such as JAVA) reduces the software development costs of implementing a DIS: due to the ease of specification, development and maintenance of the DIS.

Complex real-time embedded systems require guarantees regarding the assurance of their timing requirements. Such guarantees can be derived using advanced design and analysis methods. Many design solutions address the complexity of these systems using component-based techniques. In this paper we focus on resource sharing in component-based systems with several components executing on a multi-core processor. We consider that the tasks of each component can be scheduled on any core with the possibility of two tasks belonging to the same component executing in parallel. We propose the Parallel Hierarchical Resource Policy, a novel resource sharing policy for multi-core component-based systems. We also develop a detailed response-time based schedulability analysis for the individual components and for the composed system, assuming that intra- and inter-component resource sharing takes place. © 2011 ieee.

the size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high dependability and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. this platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we describe a fast CPU simulator and controlled object simulation for testing control software in a virtual software execution environment. the virtual environment integrates a CPU simulator and a controlled object simulator in order to test functional behaviors of embedded control software. the environment enables the developer to test control software at the same execution rate as a real system without the source codes. this is very helpful because in this industry, not all of the source codes are provided. © 2011 ieee.

System execution traces are useful artifacts for validating distributed system quality-of-service (QoS) properties, such as end-to-end response time, throughput, and service time. With proper planning during development phase of the software lifecycle, it is possible to ensure such traces contain required properties to facilitate analysis for QoS validation. In some case, however, it is not possible to ensure system execution traces contain the necessary properties for QoS analysis. this paper presents the System Execution Trace Adaptation Framework (SETAF) for adapting system execution traces to support analysis of QoS properties. It also presents results from applying SETAF to externally developed applications. the results show that it is possible to validate QoS properties by automatically adapting system execution traces at analysis time instead of modifying the application's existing source code. © 2012 ieee.

We describe a component for supporting quality of service (QoS) in object environments. this component, called the micro QoS manager (μQoS-Mngr), is associated to an application and handles all aspects of static and dynamic QoS management related to that application. End to end QoS management is provided through the cooperation of the μQoS-Mngr with a set of object resource managers (OR-Mngr) each of which is responsible for the QoS management of a specific resource, including, admission control, real-time scheduling and monitoring functionalities. QoS renegotiation is achieved through application process monitoring and communication, with the OR-Mngr. We focus on the micro QoS manager and give an overview of its implementation in a CORBA platform in the context of a video on demand application. © 2000 ieee.

Performance analysis tools for enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems require instrumenting heterogeneous sources (such as application- and system-level hardware and software resources). Traditional techniques for software instrumentation of such systems, however, are tightly coupled to system design and metrics of interest. It is therefore hard for system testers to increase their knowledge base and analytical capabilities for enterprise DRE system performance using existing instrumentation techniques when metrics of interest are not known during initial system design. this paper provides two contributions to research on software instrumentation for enterprise DRE systems. First, it presents OASIS, which is service-oriented middleware for instrumenting enterprise DRE systems to collect and extract metrics without design time knowledge of which metrics are collected. Second, this paper empirically evaluates OASIS in the context of a representative enterprise DRE system from the domain of shipboard computing. Results from applying OASIS to a representative enterprise DRE system show that its flexibility enables DRE system testers to precisely control the overhead incurred via instrumentation. © 2010 ieee.

In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embedded real-time applications mapped on distributed heterogeneous architectures. the architecture provides both spatial and temporal partitioning, thus enforcing enough separation for the critical applications. With temporal partitioning, each application is allowed to run only within predefined time slots, allocated on each processor. the sequence of time slots for all the applications on a processor are grouped within a Major Frame, which is repeated periodically. We assume that the safety-critical applications (on all criticality levels) are scheduled using static-cyclic scheduling and the non-critical applications are scheduled using fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. We consider that each application runs in a separate partition, and each partition is allocated several time slots on the processors where the application is mapped. We are interested to determine the sequence and size of the time slots within the Major Frame on each processor such that both the safety-critical and non-critical applications are schedulable. We have proposed a Simulated Annealing-based approach to solve this optimization problem. the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using several synthetic and real-life benchmarks. © 2011 ieee.
