the concept of a scenario has long been utilized in military procurement as a means of evaluating capability in an operational context. With the advent of initiatives such as the USA Department of Defence's Network-Centric Operations and the UK Ministry of Defence's Network Enabled Capability, research into the application of service-oriented architectures (SOA) as a means of delivering capability is being undertaken. A promising output of this research is the definition of scenario based evaluation models that can be applied to SOA. this paper examines the application of a military scenario framework to more conventional software evaluation situations by means of case studies. this demonstrates that similar techniques can be used in their construction and thus provides a basis for the application of scenario based evaluation models in future research.

Increasingly the need for protecting information from unauthorized access has lead to more attention in the field of information security. Access control mechanisms have been in place for the last four decades and are a powerful tool utilized to ensure security. In a real-time distributed computing environment, systems have to meet timing constraints for time sensitive applications, such as obtaining financial quotes and operating command and control systems. However, real-time distributed computing environment security is yet to be investigated. Earlier work examined a time Triggered Message Triggered object (TMO) scheme that provides real-time services in a distributed computing environment secured by applying a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). In this paper we describe the application of a sophisticated Usage Control (UCON) model for a TMO and subsequently design an application that utilizes a Coordinated Anti-Missile Interceptor Network (CAMIN) system. this application is a secure CAMIN based upon a secure TMO that applies a real time UCON (RT-UCON) in the CAMIN environment

We present a compositional approach to schedulability analysis of safety-critical Java programs. We introduce a specification language in order to write abstract behavioural specifications regarding task execution-time and use of resources. Schedulability is checked on a model composed of the abstract specifications, possibly before any implementation, and as the specifications are implemented, these implementations can be checked individually. this means that library routines potentially can be separately checked and reused, and individual tasks can be verified according to their specifications without performing the full-system-analysis.

Along with the development of multicore architectures and cloud computing, concurrent programming and computation becomes a huge challenge for application developers. distributed environment turns into complexity and unpredictability. So it is important to improve programming models on language level to make it possible for programmers unfamiliar with distributed systems to build large-scale applications. Erlang is an actor-based functional programming language that provides language level elements for concurrency. It has capability of describing large quantities of concurrent actions by multiple-process, which communicates asynchronously by sending and receiving messages. But it lacks of data structures and mechanism of language level for inherent concurrent units with a simple way of interaction, which may impede programmers in concurrent programming. Comparing with other computing element models such as Active object and Concurrent Agent, we extend Erlang with a new computing element called "EIC_Unit" and a way of interaction by "futures". It makes programmers to develop concurrent applications more easily and convenient in a distributed environment.

Allowing real-time systems to autonomously evolve or self-organize during their life-time poses challenges on guidance of such a process. Hard real-time systems must never break their timing constraints even if undergoing a change in configuration. We propose to enhance future real-time systems with an in-system model-based timing analysis engine capable of deciding whether a configuration is feasible to be executed. this engine is complemented by a formal procedure guiding system evolution. the distributed implementation of a runtime environment (RTE) implementing this procedure imposes two key questions of consistency: How do we ensure model consistency across the distributed system and how do we ensure consistency of the actual system behavior with the model? We present a synchronization protocol solving the model consistency issues and provide a discussion on implications of different mode-change protocols on consistency of the system with its model.

Applying model-driven development methodologies provide inherent benefits such as increased productivity, greater reuse, and better maintainability, to name a few. Efforts on achieving model-driven development of web services already exist. However, there is currently no complete solution that addresses non-functional aspects of these services as well. this paper presents an ongoing work which seeks to integrate these non-functional aspects in the development of web services, with a clear emphasis on security.

In this paper we present a class of emergent algorithms called Marching Pixels which can be used for real time image processing in smart camera chips. Marching Pixels are based on hardware agents which are virtually crawling in a pixel grid image to find attributes like centroid, rotation and size of an arbitrary number of objects given in an image. Due to the distributed and local processing scheme of MPs reply times in milliseconds can be fulfilled. this means in that time is determined where pre-known objects are located and how they are oriented to the main axes of the image. We present an example Marching Pixels algorithm and corresponding application-specific and programmable architectures designed for the use in embedded systems. the strengths and weaknesses of those architectures concerning the realization as FPGAs and ASICs are discussed by means of hardware synthesis results.

As quality of service (QoS)-enabled component middleware technologies gain widespread acceptance to build distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, it becomes necessary for these technologies to support real-time publish/subscribe services, which is a key requirement of a large class of DRE systems. To date there have been very limited systematic studies evaluating different approaches to integrating real-time publish/subscribe services in QoS-enabled component middleware. this paper makes two contributions in addressing these key research questions. First, we evaluate the pros and cons of three different design alternatives for integrating publish/subscribe services within QoS-enabled component middleware. Second, we empirically evaluate the performance of our container-based design and compare it with mature object-oriented real-time publish/subscribe implementations. Our studies reveal that both the performance and scalability of our design and implementation are comparable to its object-oriented counterpart, which provides a key guidance to the suitability of component technologies for DRE systems.

the complexity of software in systems like aerospace vehicles has reached the point where new techniques are needed to ensure system dependability while improving the productivity of developers. One possible approach is to use precisely defined software execution platforms that (1) enable the system to be composed from separate components, (2) restrict component interactions and prevent fault propagation, and (3) whose compositional properties are well-known. In this paper we describe the initial steps towards building a platform that combines component-based software construction with hard real-time operating system services. Specifically, the paper discusses how the CORBA component Model (CCM) could be combined with the ARINC-653 platform services and the lessons learned from this experiment. the results point towards both extending the CCM as well as revising the ARINC-653.

Context situation, which means a snapshot of the status of the real world, is formed by integrating a large amount of contexts collected from various resources. How to get the context situation and use the situation to provide better services is a challenging issue. In this paper, we focused on this challenge on the basis of the mobile cloud computing architecture. An abstract model is proposed in this paper to uniformly collect the context and send them to cloud. A rule-based large-scale context aggregation algorithm is also proposed which utilizes the MapReduce computing paradigm. Finally, a large-scale context management framework based on the abstract model and the context aggregation algorithm is proposed, and a real-time traffic demo is implemented to verify the validity of the framework.
