this research targets formal modeling of embedded systems capable of self-management. In our approach, we use the ASSL (Autonomic System Specification Language) framework as a development environment, where self-management features of embedded systems are formally specified and an implementation is automatically generated. ASSL exposes a rich set of specification constructs that help developers specify event-driven embedded systems. Hardware is sensed via special metrics intended to drive events and self-management policies that help the system handle critical situations in an autonomous reactive manner. We present this approach along with a simulation case study where ASSL is used to develop control software for the wide-angle camera carried on board NASA's Voyager II spacecraft.

this paper discusses the benefits of exploiting 1) the principle of global-time-based coordination of distributed computing actions (TCoDA) and 2) a high-level component-/object-based programming approach in developing real-time embedded computing software. the benefits are discussed in the context of a concrete case study. A new major type of distributed multimedia processing applications, called Adaptive distributed Sound Systems (ADSSs), is presented here to show the compelling nature of the TCoDA exploitation. High-quality ADSSs impose stringent real-time distributed computing requirements. they require a global-time base with precision better than 100 mus. For efficient implementation, the TMO programming scheme and associated tools are shown to be highly useful. In addition, a prototype TMO-based ADSS has been developed and its most important quality attributes have been empirically evaluated. the prototype ADSS has also turned out to be a cost-effective tool for assessing the quality of service of a TMO execution engine.

Many recent applications involve processing and analyzing uncertain data. Recently, several research efforts have addressed answering skyline queries efficiently on massive uncertain datasets. However, the research lacks methods to compute these queries on uncertain data, where each dimension of the uncertain object is represented as an interval or an exact value. In this paper, we extensively study the problem of skyline query on these interval based uncertain objects, which has never been studied before. We first model the problem of querying the skylines on interval datasets. Typically, we address two efficient algorithms with I/O optimal for the conventional interval skyline queries and constrained interval skyline queries, respectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency of all our proposed algorithms.

Embedded real-time systems with dynamic resource management capabilities are able to adapt to changing resource requirements, resource availability, the occurrence of faults and environmental changes. this enables better resource utilization, more flexibility and increased dependability. Depending on the application domain, reconfiguration decisions must be found and applied within temporal bounds. Although semantic techniques are used to react to unexpected events in standard IT systems, they exhibit a computational complexity and temporal unpredictability that is not suitable for real-time systems. this paper describes a temporally predictable framework for reconfigurable embedded real-time systems. It uses a service-oriented approach to dynamically reconfigure component interactions. Knowledge about the system structure and semantics is provided in a system ontology with relevant information for embedded realtime systems (e.g., transfer delay times, accuracy of relations). the ontology allows to automatically generate service substitutes by exploiting implicit redundancy in the system. Furthermore, an algorithm is presented that searches the ontology for semantically equivalent implementations of failed services. the process of substitution search and substitute service generation is demonstrated with an example from the automotive domain.

distributed event-based systems (DEBS) are gaining increasing attention in new application areas such as transport information monitoring, event-driven supply-chain management and ubiquitous sensor-rich environments. However, as DEBS increasingly enter the enterprise and commercial domains, performance and quality of service issues are becoming a major concern. While numerous approaches to performance modeling and evaluation of conventional request/reply-based distributed systems are available in the literature, no general approach exists for DEBS. this paper is the first to provide a comprehensive methodology for workload characterization and performance modeling of DEBS. A workload model of a generic DEBS is developed and operational analysis techniques are used to characterize the system traffic and derive an approximation for the mean event delivery latency. Following this, a modeling technique is presented that can be used for accurate performance prediction. the paper is concluded with a case study of a real life system demonstrating the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed approach.

In this work, we present the design and implementation of distributed visualization and collaboration for an immersive 3D visualizer in a component-oriented fashion. the design follows an MVC approach, isolating all the business objects in the lowest level of the application, making it modular and extensible, therefore providing an easier prototyping of functionality and the isolation of complex business logic algorithms. this design as a solution came from the necessity of an existing visualizer with a monolithic implementation, whose maintainability and improvement are impaired due to the coupling between the business logic and the diverse visualization and distribution algorithms. Our design may be reused as an inspiration for other visualizers that wish to reduce the complexity and cost of the development of new business functionality. We implemented the designed visualizer, where we verified both the synchronism of the distributed visualization and the consistency of the collaboration among multiple nodes. We also evaluated the performance impact caused by the distributed visualization.

Demands are increasing for consolidating multiple OSes on a single multi-core CPU rather than using multiple sets of an OS and a CPU. A VMM enables multiple guest OSes to run concurrently on one CPU while providing separate security domains. We have developed Gandalf a lightweight VMM targeting embedded systems with multi-core CPUs. this paper focuses on the shadow paging mechanism of Gandalf which enables physical memory isolation among guest OSes by separating guest page tables from CPUs, because shadow paging significantly affects VMM overheads and is a key to make a VMM lightweight. We designed and implemented two models of shadow paging, single shadow model and multiple shadow model. the measurement results show that they are realized lightweight.

A coordination procedure is proposed for a multi-robot rescue system that performs real-time exploration over disaster areas. real-time exploration means that every robot exploring the area always has a communication path to human operators standing by a monitor station and that the communication path is configured by ad hoc wireless networking. the proposed system procedure consists of the autonomous classification of robots into search and relay types and behavior algorithms for each class of robot. Search robots explore the areas and relay robots act as relay terminals between search robots and monitor station. the rule of the classification and the behavior algorithm refer to the forwarding table of each robot constructed for ad hoc networking. Computer simulations are executed with the decision-theoretic approach as the exploration strategy of search robots.

the technology supporting multiplayer online games (MOGs) has greatly improved in the past few years. this represents great news both for players all over the world and for researchers that are struggling behind tough problems in real-time distributed systems. Indeed, MOGs represent a peculiar class of distributed systems, sharing features, requirements, challenges, and thereby also feasible solutions. To this aim, we focus on issues and state-of art solutions related to a crucial aspect in MOG deployment: the synchronization of its nodes. In particular, we review techniques able to guarantee that the system evolves in a quick and consistent way and highlight how they can be made more effective by exploiting specific game features. To further support this claim, we also present results from an experimental evaluation we performed.

Data stream processing can be applied in scenarios where high throughput and real-time response is required. In distributed environments, preprocessing at sensor nodes is beneficial. Processing logic is deployed at sensor nodes and data is processed while streaming through the nodes. However, updating the logic is difficult in such a continuously running environment. Volatile operator states get lost if nodes are restarted for an update. the challenge is to update the operators during the runtime with the preservation of their states. We developed a data stream processing solution which is capable of adapting the logic on-the-fly. States are copied while migrating from the original to new logic. For implementation, we utilized the dynamic component system OSGi. In this paper we present methods for state selection and transfer from the input buffers of the running operators. the state values to be transferred are limited to a minimum quantity. the state transfer methods allow a faster migration compared to other approaches and a guaranteed output, which makes our system real-time compatible.
