time-triggered communication is a favored design strategy for safety-critical systems. However, the startup of time-triggered systems is a significant concern, since the time-line from which fault-tolerance is supported must be established in segmented mediums, e.g. multi-hop networks. the startup problems are particularly challenging since clique formation, i.e. the establishment of disjoint time-triggered communication sets, may be systematically induced. this paper presents an alternative startup solution based upon a braided-ring architecture called BRAIN (braided ring availability integrity network). Segmentation-induced cliques are particularly prevalent in this architecture, since each node presents a potential medium break. the described strategy dramatically improves startup performance in relation to current approaches by leveraging the cooperative action of adjacent nodes during startup and high-integrity data propagation.

Many applications in the industrial control domain are safety-critical. A large number of analysis techniques to guarantee safety may be applied at different levels in the development process of a Programmable Logic Controller. the development process is typically associated with a tool chain comprising model transformations. the preservation of safety properties in model transformations is necessary to achieve a safe system. Preservation can be guaranteed by showing that invariants are preserved by transformations. Adequate transformation rules and invariant specification mechanisms are needed for this. We report on a transformation from Sequential Function Charts and Function Block Diagrams of the IEC 61131-3 standard to BIP. Our presentation features a description of formal syntax and semantics of the involved languages. We present transformation rules for generating BIP code out of IEC 61131-3 specifications. Based on this, we establish a notion of invariant preservation between the two languages.

real-time databases are different from conventional databases in that they have timing constraints on data and on transactions upon the data. the timing constraints of data require that the current status of the real world must be close enough to the state represented by the contents of the database. the timing constraints of transactions are typically expressed in the form of deadline which indicates a certain time in the future by which a transaction must be completed. Conventional data models can not be directly applied to describe the conceptual data model of a real-time database, since there is no mechanism to deal with the representation of timing constraints. A real-time data model should simultaneously satisfy many goals. It should clearly and concisely provide support for specifying timing constraints on data and transactions, semantics of real-time data and real-time transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies to meet the timing constraints defined by the real-time applications. this paper presents a real-time object-oriented data model and its use in designing real-time extensions to the DB4O database management system. this data model supports expression of time-constrained data, time-constrained transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies. It also can be integrated easily in existing object-oriented method and permits automatic code generation of all the real-time code of an application.

the performance of autonomous vehicles could be drastically improved if ad-hoc networking and suitable real-time coordination is employed to optimize and improve the joint behavior of multiple autonomous units. However, due to ad-hoc connections and the real-time interaction the correctness and safety of such coordinated autonomous units is very hard to ensure. In this paper we present how service- oriented real-time coordination can be employed to achieve this goal. Based on the proper real-time coordination between two or more vehicles captured by a service contract, we focus on structural changes and the instantiation and termination of service contracts which is a crucial prerequisite for a safe system operation. We present how the structural changes and the service contract creation/deletion can be modeled by a well-defined UML subset consisting of class and object diagrams with collaborations as well as well-defined behavioral rules can be verified taking the dynamic structural changes due to the ad-hoc networking as well as the real-time coordination into account. the new verification technique is outlined and the application of the technique for an application example is presented.

As ITS technology evolves, very large volume of traffic data can be obtained in real-time. Traffic data are continuously produced and they can be considered as a kind of stream data. Currently, such traffic data are not maintained permanently because of the storage limitations of operational systems. therefore, it was impossible to compare temporal historical patterns over long time periods. In this paper, we propose a traffic data management scheme, which can handle historical data as well as current data. the proposed scheme is based on the GALIS architecture, which is a cluster-based distributed computing system architecture that consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone. Some experimental results showing performance factors are also explained.

Grid computing has emerged as a new paradigm of distributed computing technology on large-scale resource sharing and coordinated problem solving. Based on a proposed Web service-based grid architecture, we have designed a service grid middleware system called CROWN which aims to promote the utilization of valuable resources and cooperation of researchers nationwide and world-wide. To address the issues of CROWN resource management, we proposed some key technologies including trustworthy remote and hot service deployment, overlay-based distributed resource organization, resource scheduling and load balance, and federation-based virtual organization management. A status of the wide-area CROWN testbed is also introduced in this paper. three typical applications including AREM, MDP and gViz are deployed on the CROWN testbed. Experience of CROWN testbed deployment and application development shows that the middleware can support the typical scenarios such as computing-intensive applications and data-intensive applications etc.

Compared to the conventional physical cluster, the virtual cluster technology has features such as flexible configuration, easy management and high system security, which provides users with an easily customized computing environment. Virtual machine image files as the most important stored objects in the virtual computing environment include all the information about the whole life cycle of virtual machine. the storage of the virtual machine images is an important part of virtual computing. there are mainly two ways to store the images, which include local storage and networking storage. this paper proposes a mechanism to manage the distributed image files to support the virtual computing environment. It uses the computing nodes` local storage as a chunk server in a distributed file system, and regards the distribution of the image files as a primary factor to choose the computing node to deploy virtual machine and to implement a backup mechanism of distributed images based on historical records of image files. Functional test and performance test results show that it can effectively support the virtual computing environment and has great values of applications and research.

In recent times real-time distributed systems have definitively become peer-to-peer organized. the common interactions are those of different real-time components dealing with sensors or actuators, implementing controllers, performing monitoring and surveillance tasks, and interacting between them in a dynamic decentralized way. there is a need for mechanisms that allow the integration of these independent components, saving development time while keeping their real-time capability. Services and events, thanks to their decoupled nature are perfect candidates for supporting these architectures. the data centric approach goes even farther, introducing a global data space that allows a flexible, decoupled and scalable coordination environment over which services and events can be added as specific interactions mechanisms inside this global data space, in order to support all the architectural possibilities. the Data Distribution Service specification provides a totally decentralized data-centric approach with real-time quality of service support. It is a perfect base upon which to develop a framework for the integration of real-time distributed architectures.

In many software development projects, performance requirements are not addressed until after the application is developed or deployed, resulting in costly changes to the software or the acquisition of expensive high-performance hardware. To remedy this, researchers have developed model-driven performance analysis techniques for assessing how well performance requirements are being satisfied early in the software lifecycle. In some cases, companies may not have the expertise to perform such analysis on their software; therefore they have an independent assessor perform the analysis. this paper describes an approach for conducting independent model-driven software performance assessments of UML 2.0 designs and illustrates this approach using a real-time signal generator as a case study

the recent increase in complexity and functionality in embedded systems makes them more vulnerable to rootkit-type attacks, raising the need for integrity management systems. However, as of today there is no such system that can guarantee the system's safety while matching the low-resource, real-time and multi-core requirements of embedded systems. In this paper, we present a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) based monitoring service for embedded systems that checks the actual kernel data against a safe data specification. However, due to the VMM and multi-core nature of the system, the guest OS can be preempted at any time, leading to the checking of potentially inconsistent states. We evaluated two approaches to solve this problem: detecting such invalid states by checking specific kernel data, and detecting system calls using the VMM.
