Organic computing is a new and promising research area. Inspired by nature, organic computing research wants to learn and adopt from techniques and properties of nature. the goal is to acquire the so called Self-X properties like self-organization and self-healing. Taking the hormone system of mammals as a role model, the artificial hormone system(AHS) was designed to map tasks on processing elements using artificial hormones. In previous publications we presented the idea of an organic middleware and first theoretical results. As we want to run this middleware in an embedded scenario we will now present an implementation of the AHS written in pure ANSI C and show first real-world scenarios and results of test series.

Internet delay is important for FPS games because it can determine who wins or loses a game. Network traffic for such games has been analysed using packet size and inter-packet time metrics fitting a statistical model. However, the effect of other network traffic on game traffic was not investigated or considered. this paper explores the traffic generated by an FPS game, taking into account the effects of other Internet traffic. Experiments were conducted in an isolated local network, repeated across the Internet and in a simulator with varying degrees of background traffic. FPS game packet inter-arrival time distribution was observed to spread with the decrease of bandwidth due to other traffic along network paths. the twin peak characteristic of packet inter-arrival time observed in the isolated local network experiment flattens and spreads to a bell-shape as bandwidth decreases due to the increased and non-unique delay of packet arrivals.

Recently, the application domains where the development of systems with temporal guarantees is needed have increased. the majority of such domains are dynamic environments where the classical design approach is no longer applicable since it is too pessimistic. thus, new challenges arise to adapt the current methodologies used in different architectural levels to these new environments. New directions and paradigms are needed to allow combining functional flexibility and dynamism with temporal predictability. the current work addresses these new challenges through the exploration of the applicability of concepts from the service oriented paradigm to distributed real-time systems. We propose a concrete system model based on a holistic time-triggered-based approach for design and configuration. Based on this model, we analyse the architectural entities required for two different architectural design approaches: static, when no reconfigurations at run-time are admitted, and dynamic, when these reconfigurations are possible. An exhaustive composition algorithm is also proposed.

this paper introduces ReDAC, a new algorithm for dynamic reconfiguration of multi-threaded applications. In order to achieve high reliability and availability, distributed component software has to support dynamic reconfiguration. Typical examples include the application of hot-fixes to deal with security vulnerabilities. ReDAC can be implemented on top of the modern component-platforms Java and .NET. We extend the statical term component, denoting a unit of deployment, to runtime by defining a capsule (runtime component instance) to be a set of interconnected objects. this allows us to apply dynamic updates at the level of components during runtime without stopping whole applications. Using system-wide unique identifiers for threads (logical thread IDs), we can detect and also bring capsules into a reconfigurable state by selectively blocking threads, relying on data structures maintained by additional logic integrated into the capsules using aspect-oriented programming. An important contribution of this paper is that ReDAC supports the dynamic reconfiguration of distributed multi-threaded and re-entrant components with cyclic call dependencies.

component based software development (CBSD) has been established in the development of automotive real-time embedded applications at Bosch. CBSD together with software product line (SPL) practice has improved software reuse, productivity, quality and complexity management, by raising the level of abstraction for software constructions and by sharing services. Although CBSD has contributed to the aforementioned improvement in the software development practice, the existing Bosch component model often requires software developers to take a close look at the implementation including models (e.g., ASCET-MD ) and even complex source code to understand software behavior and dependencies when reusing and adapting software components. this hinders the realization of the full benefits of CBSD, as the available information on the component level does not sufficiently describe important aspects of software behavior. this paper presents the concepts and case studies of 'signal flows' and 'mode dependent signal flows', which provide crucial software behavior information for real time embedded systems at the component level.

this paper describes an integrated approach for the design and subsequent behavioral analysis of concurrent software designs for embedded systems. the approach integrates software design using the COMET concurrent object-oriented design method, colored Petri net (CPN) modeling, and performance measurement of the target system. the approach combines information from platform-independent and platform-specific models to construct analyses of software architectures for embedded systems. It allows an engineer/analyst to examine behavioral and performance properties of a software architecture design paired with a candidate implementation architecture. Applying the behavioral design patterns in the UML-based design along with corresponding CPN templates, the results from the analyses can be directly mapped back to the original design artifacts. the approach is illustrated using a robot controller case study

this work presents a proposal to use aspect orientation in the analysis and design of distributed embedded real-time systems (DERTS). these systems have several requirements directly related to their main characteristics, the so-called non-functional requirements (NFR), which refer to orthogonal properties, conditions, and restrictions that are spread out over the entire system. Pure object-oriented methods do not address successfully those so called cross-cutting concerns, so new technologies, like aspect orientation, are applied in order to fulfill this gap. the paper presents DERAF i stributed embedded real-time aspects framework, an extensible and high-level framework (i.e. implementation-independent) to handle NFR of DERTS at earlier design stages. DERAF combines the use of aspects with RT-UML, aiming to separate the handling of non-functional from functional requirements in the model driven design of DERTS. the paper presents the use of DERAF on a case study of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV)

Finite state machine (FSM) models are widely used to model the operations of computer systems. Since the basic FSM model is timeless, it is not possible to model within the basic FSM framework system properties that are dependent on the progression of real time, such as the duration of computations or the limited temporal validity of real-time data. To overcome these limitations, efforts have been made to modify the FSM model to include some notion of time. It is the objective of this paper to expand existing work on basic FSMs and timed automata to include the concept of a sparse global time base as a central element of the model. We call such an extended FSM model a periodic finite state machine (PFSM) model. the PFSM model also incorporates the notions of state variables, global time, periodic clock constraints, and time-triggered activities. thereby, PFSMs enable a concise and intuitive representation of distributed control systems and reduce the gap between a modeled system and its implementation

the size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high dependability and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. this platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we describe a fast CPU simulator and controlled object simulation for testing control software in a virtual software execution environment. the virtual environment integrates a CPU simulator and a controlled object simulator in order to test functional behaviors of embedded control software. the environment enables the developer to test control software at the same execution rate as a real system without the source codes. this is very helpful because in this industry, not all of the source codes are provided.

timeliness-guaranteed computing considering the worst case can hardly be accomplished at run time because of the uncertainty caused by resource sharing, asynchronous events and conflicting timing constraints between tasks. An easier way to reach it is to do some off-line analysis from design time with predictable characteristics of tasks. the TMO model supporting time-triggered (SpM) and message-triggered (SvM) member-threads is a well-known real-time object-oriented task model that aims the design-time guaranteed computing. In this paper, a new efficient task serializer that allocates the executions of time-triggered periodic tasks of multiple TMOs without delay and preemption to avoid resource conflicts is presented. the serializer tries to find scheduling scenarios in that each SpM is executed at its exact trigger-time without delay based on the given WCET. this is done by recasting the initial offsets of SpMs to avoid overlaps of executions. And several methods to handle SvMs according to the types of SvMs using the serializer are also proposed.
