the component/container paradigm helps to reduce the complexity and enhance the scalability of software development for plain desktop or enterprise systems. However the frameworks enabling this approach are often not suitable for systems with limited processing power and memory sizes, and are not dedicated to real-time requirements. As part of the European IST project COMPARE, we study a possible projection from a high-level component model (CORBA component Model) towards a low-level RT/E platform (OSEK). Preliminary results from this study are accounted in this paper In the first part, the main features of CCM and OSEK are examined. then we propose execution and communication models using an API for OSEK that is as similar as possible to that in the CCM framework.

A key challenge in keeping distributed clocks well synchronized in a LAN environment via OS- or middleware-level mechanisms is to create an interference-free condition in a network channel(s) and a nonpreemptible on-alert condition in the responsible thread in each node during each resynchronization round while keeping the length of each round as short as possible. An approach for meeting this challenge which is based on the middleware architecture TMOSM, has been presented. A prototype implementation and its measurements indicated that with a typical network of PCs connected via a 10 Mbps Ethernet, the PC nodes can be kept synchronized within the deviation bound of 0.5 milliseconds. the organizing principle is believed to be applicable to many real-time OSs or middleware used to support distributed computing applications.

General-purpose middleware, by definition, cannot readily support domain-specific semantics without significant manual efforts in specializing the middleware. this paper presents GRAFT (GeneRative Aspects for Fault Tolerance), which is a model-driven, automated, and aspects-based approach for specializing general-purpose middleware with failure handling and recovery semantics imposed by a domain. Model-driven techniques are used to specify the special fault tolerance requirements, which are then transformed into middleware-level code artifacts using generative programming. Since the resulting fault tolerance semantics often crosscut the middleware architecture, GRAFT uses aspect-oriented programming to weave them into the original fabric of the general-purpose middleware. We evaluate the capabilities of GRAFT using a representative case study.

the scheduling paradigm offers an alternative execution model for services and applications, which is of particular interest for the enterprise domain. therefore, task scheduling is considered as an integral part of many contemporary information systems and service platforms. In this paper we present, the architectural aspects of an integrated scheduling framework, targeted to the mobile applications market along with an implementation prototype, which was also developed with the purpose of demonstrating its capabilities and identifying its limitations.

Embedded real-time applications are often built from scratch on a trial-and-error basis, which leads to sub-optimal designs with latent errors that are not detectable in early stages of use or deployment and often incurs prolonged time-to-market. A new application framework, called Verifiable Embedded real-time Application Framework (VERTAF) is proposed for embedded real-time application development, with the aim of reducing design errors and increasing design productivity VERTAF is an integration of three technologies, namely object-oriented technology, software component technology, and formal verification technology. VERTAF consists of five software components: Implanter, Modeler, Scheduler, Verifier, and Generator. Experiences of using VERTAF show a significant increase in design productivity through design reuse, and a significant decrease in design time and effort through design verification. An example shows a relatively low design effort on the part of the designer using VERTAF.

this paper presents a component model for building distributed applications with fault-tolerance requirements. the AFT-CCM model selects the configuration of replicated services during execution time based on QoS requirements specified by the user. the configuration is managed using a set of components that deal with the non-Junctional aspects of the application. the characteristics of this model and the results obtained with its implementation are described along this paper.

this work presents a proposal to use aspect orientation in the analysis and design of distributed Embedded real-time Systems (DERTS). these systems have several requirements directly related to their main characteristics, the so-called Non-Functional Requirements (NFR), which refer to orthogonal properties, conditions, and restrictions that are spread out over the entire system. Pure object-oriented methods do not address successfully those so called crosscutting concerns, so new technologies, like aspect orientation, are applied in order to fulfill this gap. the paper presents DERAF - distributed Embedded real-time Aspects Framework, an extensible and high-level framework (i.e. implementation-independent) to handle NFR of DERTS at earlier design stages. DERAF combines the use of aspects with RT-UML, aiming to separate the handling of non-functional from functional requirements in the Model Driven Design of DERTS. the paper presents the use of DERAF on a case study of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

A transactional agent is a mobile agent to manipulate objects distributed on computers with some type of commitment condition. For example, a transactional agent commits only if at least one object could be successfully manipulated in the at-least-one commitment condition. Computers may stop by fault while networks are assumed to be reliable. In the client-server model, servers can be fault-tolerant according to traditional replication and checkpointing technologies. However, an application program cannot be performed if a client computer is faulty An application program can be performed on another operational computer even if a computer is faulty in the transactional agent model. For example, a transactional agent can move to another operational computer if some destination computer where the agent to move is faulty there are kinds of faulty computers for a transactional agent, current, destination, and sibling computers where a transactional agent now exist, will move, and has visited, respectively. We discuss how the transactinal agent can be tolerant of the types of faults. We show how a program reliably manipulating objects can be realized in a mobile agent in presence of computer faults.

We present an architectural framework that provides the foundation for building smart object systems and uses a document centric approach utilizing a profile based artefact framework and a task based application framework. Our artefact framework represents an instrumented physical smart objects as a collection of service profiles and expresses these services in generic documents. Applications for smart objects are expressed as a collection of functional tasks (independent of the implementation.) in a corresponding document. A runtime component provides the foundation for mapping these tasks to the corresponding service provider smart objects. there are three primary advantages of our approach- firstly, it allows developers to write applications in a generic way without prior knowledge of the smart objects that could be used by the applications. Secondly;smart object management (locating/accessing/etc.) issues are completely handled by the infrastructure thus application development becomes rapid and simple. Finally;the programming abstraction used in the framework allows extension of functionalities of smart objects and applications very easily. We describe an. implemented prototype of our framework and show examples of its use in a real life scenario to illustrate its feasibility.

Static cache analysis for data allocated on the heap is practically impossible for standard data caches. We propose a distinct object cache for heap allocated data. the cache is highly associative to track symbolic object addresses in the static analysis. Cache lines are organized to hold single objects and individual fields are loaded on a miss. this cache organization is statically analyzable and improves the performance. In this paper we present the design and implementation of the object cache in a uniprocessor and chip-multiprocessor version of the Java processor JOP. © 2011 ieee.
